All About Life After Jail

Life is hard and then you die
in the meantime you mostly cry
It seems to me that you have been changed
your attitude somewhat rearranged

The place you've been is not so nice
and a terrible place to seek advice
All who go there have had a hard life
full of grief and constant strife

They think they know what to do to survive
but they are not living - they are merely alive
That place is rife with takers trying to live in the strife
neither knowing how to give nor how to live life

You are different from them I know
and you have important places to go
Listen carefully to those who really care
they're the ones that can get you there

How it is now is not how it's supposed to be
you are actually supposed to be free
Free always to be who you are - yourself
and never to be put on a shelf

Only you can find the answers you seek
and it will certainly take more than a week
Hard work is coming of that be certain
I pray you put away your fear and raise that curtain

The curtain you closed to create the blind
to tearfully cower and hide behind.
The time is now for the light to shine on you
and light the way for the life you want for you.

All that’s left now is to do the crying
and please know you’re not really dying.
It is a part of life and it’s truly a life worth living
especially when you start giving

Giving freely with no concern
knowing there'll likely be nothing in return
That is truly a life worth living - a life of love and learning
to put finally to rest that painful burning

So there you have what many believe
a concept I pray you are of a mind to receive
You’ll make the right choices on that you should depend
and know always my love and friendship will never end.

Drugs and Sex Come With Pain

A typically depressing inky dark night
He sat at the corner waiting for the light
His mind as usual not fully engaged
His pounding psyche had him enraged
As if on cue she opened the door plopping into the seat
Who the hell is this he’s about to meet
He looked to his right fearful of what he might see
Thinking who is this person that has chosen me
Then he first saw her beautiful face
And he was ever so grateful to be in that place

So it began this tumultuous trip
More exciting with every twist and tortuous dip
She seemed very peaceful and really quite nice
They talked for a moment and agreed on the price
After that there was little to say
They went to her place not far away
When he first saw her baby boy there on the bed
He was overcome with deep feelings of dread
She said not to worry and took him away
He was still intrigued - with nothing to say

She slipped off her things and lay on the bed
He couldn’t believe his eyes and went out of his head
She was absolutely stunning so slender and silky
Her breasts were aglow and her skin so milky
He dove to her loins trying to devour her whole
She told him she liked it and his skill she extolled
She writhed and she groaned until they were one
He had surrendered his soul before they were done
They exchanged numbers that very first night
Little aware of their upcoming plight

Now some time has passed though how much their unsure
They can never go back where they were
Addictions took over their lives - a painful and familiar plight
Hers already in full flight and his coming back but not quite
She called him honey and begged him to come day and night
He came running each time - her rescuing white knight
She was in danger far more than she knew
He knew it well but not what to do
She wouldn’t listen to him
She wouldn’t have listened to you

At last came a break in this perilous trail
She was arrested and taken to jail
Again she called him to come to her aid
And so he came but not to get laid
She grew every day she was locked up
He visited often to help keep her chin up
Little did he know how his feelings would stir
He was beginning to fall in love with her
She was in her twenties a mother of four
First two girls then two boys more
As the time passed she blossomed into this beautiful creature
He was absolutely taken with her every feature
She showed him her heart and her soul
Forever transforming his previous role

She entered treatment the other day
He’s hopeful they can show her the way
At first they talked often by phone
Now not so much and he is alone
He wrote her a poem and bought her some things
Whenever he helps her his heart truly sings
So now there he is a bit lost at sea
Knowing he hurt both he and she
Addiction is such a cruel and relentless master
Bringing on pain faster and faster
Denying ourselves the joys of life and true love
Our pain is so deep we curse God above

With all of his being and heart
He prays for her to get a clean start
His life is so much farther along than hers
Hoping hers will get better and his won’t get worse
A story of addiction to drugs and sex
Ever tragic, pain filled and so very complex
Things that seem to make us feel so much better
Devour our guts and only make our tears much wetter
Be on guard for yourself and all whom you know
On this kind of journey you don’t want to go
It was all his fault of that he’s completely aware
But don’t sell him short - he does truly care
Although happily ever after wasn’t their destiny
He prays with God’s help she can be set free
Now as his once white hot passion grows dim
Loving her still he realizes that will be good enough for him.

For Diane

For Diane

You are young and so alive
and I am old but with the fire still alive

We come from places far apart
and still we connected at the heart

I have fought the fight you face
it happens in a very frightening place

Your troubles lie within your past
and time moves ever so fast

Slow down time - remember who you really are
you're not the person they say you are
Not the one who's lost control
or the one who'll never be whole
you are a very special person with a loving soul

Life is a gift most take for granted
and it's true your past life can't be recanted

It happened as you remember it
With all the pain and all the shit, but you can stop living in it

You can go on by learning to forgive yourself
and live a life not free of trouble, strife or yearning
but ever still a rewarding life of love and learning

I will help if you ask and I'll get right to it
But for now I love you and pray for your recovery
knowing full well that you can do it

As I have fought and so far have won
you can do so as well
to free yourself from your personal hell

Long after I have passed and left this place
please know I left remembering your beautiful face

It is the joy of my life to know when I am dead and gone
that you will go on - doing for someone new
what I have tried to do for you

Your special smile tells me we have won
Although a temporary victory it shall always be

As you will learn and I truly believe
"one day at a time" is the key.

I love you and I know you love me.

Losing My Father

We gather tearfully to watch and wait each of us pondering his unavoidable fate. He is dying right before our eyes and in our own way each of us cries. The silence is deafening in such a small place a room too small to get up and pace. He signals silently for someone to come to tell them he's so grateful for all who have come. So we wait and we strive for a suitable plan to show our respect for such an honorable man. When he is gone we will cherish this time that he will be gone seems like a crime. He taught us all what we needed to know some lessons were fast and some were quite slow. For this is the last lesson he teaches us now we're all going to die and he's showing us how. He is our father and we do love him so and hope very soon he can peacefully go. When the time comes to turn out the light there is no doubt he will have gotten it right.

Stormy Lessons

A life of learning is not for the meek
  against your views some will loudly speak;
jackals sneering and snickering in their folly
and in that moment others may seem jolly.
Persevere in all your thoughts as most are not that flawed
as when all beauty meets a beast and so then must be pawed
like a raging vandal they will come roaring in their glory
it is your peace and confidence that illustrate the story.
Becalm the savage verbal gale with your gentle words and reason
it is in your words the logic lies and most will find that pleasin'
and when the storm subsides and skulks away
know that in your learning - you taught someone today.

The Anger of Love

my anger simmers deep in my soul as I dig myself even deeper into this hole I handle the shovel with such dexterity and pace flinging the dirt of my emotions all over the place how do i find myself here and when will it end it is my love that angers me to no end my love for another that blinded my eyes and now it is my forlorn heart that cries the anger so real that I might never heal I still love her and that's a very big deal so deep in my hole I will live until I find the strength to forgive only then will I emerge to run under the sun praying to God that this is the one make no mistake it was totally me there is no finer lover than she with that I must live out my days regretting mistakes of my former ways tell her I love her so that she might know how deeply it hurt watching her go let her know that I wish her the best as I finish my torment devoid of rest and this is why love hurts

The Me You Can Se

The me you see is not myself, he’s tucked away on
a high shelf.

A shelf built with painstaking care knowing nobody
could hurt me there.

I know it seems that I’m always there - a platitude
here and a funny joke there.

But til I can know who you really are - I will hold
you off and at that from afar.

Should I discover the courage to leap from that
shelf - I think just maybe I could be myself.

Somehow I know I’m incomplete only a half in
search of the whole but I’ll continue to await my
kindred soul.

If that someone is you we will both surely know
and then off to live we will happily go.

Many before you have tried to make me take the
leap, but it is after all my life to keep.

So please stay near and be my friend as I have no
idea how this might end.

It could end all is well and really be great, or end
really sad and be really bad.

No matter which way it might go – it’s all about the
hunt – Tally Ho!

The best lessons of life I have learned always
include getting burned.

Singed with the fire of reckless desire or standing
vigil at a funeral pyre.

So it must be true what they say – the good they die
young and the old fade away.

I must be the latter and so goes my life and if I may
I bid you good day.

Stealth

They come in the night and with great stealth bent on a mission to steal my wealth. A mission so dastardly evil and vile to ever remove my reason to smile. She is my light and my anchor - the best ever their mission is doomed - I will leave her never. In body and soul there is an unbroken link together we live, love and together we think. Wait - the target seems a bit hazy to me. is it I or is it she? So ever on alert for myself I'd never have thought my ever present vigilance would go all for naught. It is her they come after - the fears and the doubt filling her ear - she has to get out. She is the source of my peace, joy and love we belong together - like peace and a dove. I pray she can hold fast and stay I don't think I'll make it if she goes away.
