Farida Akhtar Poem
White Saree
You my friend! In White(1) Saree(2) and grim faced
Your dresses were, as always, colorful and laced
What happened to that enchanting, infectious smile?
Where is that enthusiasm, your charming style?
Death is a reality and everyone must die
The living ones mustn’t be left for agony to fry
Humans are not candles that burn through the night
Tell me why widowers are not made to wear White
Why should only women this branding endure
They are also human with a heart and soul for sure
Change this White Saree and in the garbage throw
This is how a system that is archaic must go
Come to me, my love, let me tell you what is life
Your being mustn’t be embodiment of agony and strife
Give up this white coffin and wear red, scarlet and pink
The fountain of life is gushing out; it is for you to drink
Let us, like our olden days, in horizon of thoughts fly
Life’s rainbows await you; so do colors of butterfly
Shed your gloom and let the roses of your cheeks blossom
Walk along the valley of life hand in hand with a handsom
------
(1) In Hindu religion the widowed women are forced to wear only white cotton clothes
(2) Traditional dress of Indian & Bangladeshi women and also some other far eastern countries

Farida Akhtar Poem
O bright star of hope! I admire your beauty and glow
You stand out in the jamboree of twinkling stars of desires
As I see from my dwelling’s window your luminous face so bright
O light in the moonless night of my life how I love your sight!
You belong to kingdom of skies and I the domain of earth
Yet it is you that rules over the empire of my craving soul
Do not hide behind the curtain of my dark clouds of despair
As my eyes will open the floodgates of a catastrophic storm
The eyes that enliven with your beauty and your charm
My ship of life will be wrecked without the aid of your direction
You are the blossom of the withering garden of my dreams
Come to me my darling and fill the emptiness of my life
Without you my life is nothing but agony and strife
I recall my youthful days how playful girl I was!
In the game of hide and seek you peeped from the hole in cloud
I sang a passionate rhythmic song responding to your implore.
And rendered the profound poetry of Rabindra Nath Tagore
You are the one that bestows light to my imagination
I admire you most O Bright Star in the God’s entire creation
Though sometimes the hope you give is nothing but a mirage
But from the stark darkness of anguish better a flicker of hope

Farida Akhtar Poem
My love, O dear, isn’t confined
to you alone
You are mortal and my love
immortal
My undying love goes beyond
horizons
I love the moon that gives me
moonlit nights
I love the stars that are woven
in the sky
I love the sun that brightens
my days
I love mighty oceans and
fathomless seas
I love mountains, embodiment
of height and strength
I love the village where my
mother lives
And its earth the custodian of
my ancestors’ bones
I love rains that brings crops,
fruits and flowers
I love music and rhythm of
dancer’s Payal
I am a born lover, my love
knows no bounds
It traverses the earth and
scales gigantic skies
To reach the Throne of the
Creator, the God!

Farida Akhtar Poem
You are the sunshine of my life
You are the hope in my heart
You are the peace of my soul.
Moonlight in despair’s darkness
A rainbow on the horizon of
mind
Embodiment where happiness
lies
A dream I see with open eyes
My soul yearns for you my love
Life without you is endlessly
tough
I have scaled skies, believe me
it’s true
I have come to the world only
for you
