They Said

They said you may not make it,
They said it couldn’t be.
You may not leave the hospital,
May never come home with me.

A baby born this soon,
Is too small to make a sound.
So, don’t expect to hear him cry,
Like the healthy babies around.

You showed them from that moment
That you had other plans.
You came into the world crying,
Kicking, moving your hands.

Then, they said it would be tough,
And they couldn’t have been more right,
But you proved you were strong enough
And showed how you could fight.

They said your brain was damaged,
You may never talk, or see.
But, now you babble for hours,
And quickly reach for me.

They said you may not walk,
Or ever learn to crawl,
And I can’t keep from smiling,
As you disprove them all.

They that said it was doubtful
You would walk away untouched.
But I stayed ever hopeful,
For the child I loved so much.

See, Mommy never doubted,
I knew right from the start.
My thoughts were often clouded,
But I listened with my heart.

I heard a constant voice
Saying, “It’s not up to them
Hold strong your faith, I have a plan,
And a special one for him.”

You are child of God,
A miracle from above.
Sent to prove His mercy,
And the power of His love.

A Life Worth Saving

I know I’m small, and weak as well,
But I’m a fighter, my Mommy can tell.
She holds my hand and strokes my hair,
And my heart rate shows her that I know she’s there.
Though my eyes are still shut and I’m too frail to cry,
Don’t give up on me yet! Don’t I deserve to try?

I may be tiny, no bigger than your hand
But I’m still a person, don’t you understand?
I can feel touch and I can hear sound,
And my heartbeat increases when Mommy’s around.
My skin is transparent and purplish-red,
And I’m covered in tubes, closed up in this bed.

I’m trying my best to be healthy and strong
Don’t say that I can’t, and to save me is wrong.
Don’t say I’m too fragile, my life won’t be average,
Don’t debate my life over financial baggage.

Won’t you stand up beside me, and go with your heart?
Be a voice for me and others with such a cruel start.
We can’t help ourselves, we can’t make a stand,
We can’t help save our lives, but you can.

Don’t avoid my request and leave it up to another,
It could have been you in the shoes of my mother.
She did nothing wrong, she kept me safe and sound
And still, premature birth turned our lives upside-down.

Trevors Letter To Mommy

Dear Mommy,

I heard you talking to me today.
You said you were sorry that things turned out this way.
I heard you say you loved me more than I would ever know,
And I heard you break down and cry when it was time for you to go.
I know you will be back to see me, I never have a doubt.
See, there’s this man that told me what this is all about.
He said I was sick, and that it makes you very sad.
He said you talk to him a lot each day, and so does Dad.
He told me you love me, and that you miss me when your gone,
But don’t worry Mommy, I am never left alone!
This man stays here all the time,
He talks to me and holds me,
And says I’ll be just fine.

Oh and he knows you too!
He says he is watching and he is so proud of you!
He told me you can’t see him, but you should know he’s here,
I’ve even seen him sit by you and catch your falling tears.
So don’t be sad Mommy!
It’s all going to be okay,
He said I can go home with you & Dad one day!

But its not time yet, just a little while longer,
He said he’s saving people because of me
And making our family stronger.

Well, I have to go now,
We have a lot of work to do,
Oh, His name is Jesus, Mommy!
And He said He loves you too.
