Christina Cowling Poem
How I long for the tumbleweed, rich prairie soil,
green stains on my jeans from the long, juicy grass,
the songs of the frogs, my father's deep voice,
my mother's goulash, my innocent youth
and a rain water bath.
How I long for my childhood, my magical past.

Christina Cowling Poem
Your nose bled last night,
suddenly, without reason
except for the blood thinners you're on,
but then you are almost ninety-three.
I worried about you, my historical, fun loving father,
though we laughed when I said,
"You'd better not die before your book launch,"
and you asked, "Can I die after?"
Still we put our joking away
when we heard the little girl inside me begging,
"Please don't die, Daddy and leave me an orphan,
please, please, please, although I'm sixty-three."

Christina Cowling Poem
Unwittingly she gives him
the password to her heart.
There is freedom in love,
selfish is not a definition.
A bird flies from its mother's nest
and a baby weans from its mother's breast.
He tells her
that her dreams are reserved for heaven.
Her years age bitter
as she communes with fermented spirits
in her cellar
without time left
to wait for change.
Only her ashes will soar now
and she prays
that they will sprout
liberty wings.

Christina Cowling Poem
I felt the rain on my face,
said I'd felt it first
but you said you had
as we walked hand in hand
into the copper tone sun set--
you punch drunk
and me just a little tipsy.
"It was a wonderful party,"
we both said together
then laughed
because neither one of us
had wanted to attend it.
We agreed that life was like that--
when you least expect to
you have a fantastic time
and so it was
we didn't argue
over who'd felt the rain first
just enjoyed it
with uplifted spirits and faces.

Christina Cowling Poem
May you watch a leaf
light on the wing of a butterfly
that circles the world
and know that united
our love
can go that far too.
