Hollyhocks

it was a chorus line of hollyhocks against a crumbling red brick building
that devastated my poem,
they laid waste to the words you asked me to write,
you said I would try to hurt you with my intent,
my rhyme,
I said your prejudice and ignorance were showing,
like wearing a hooded down overcoat near the end of June
you said 'fire away' and I asked if you knew why
Bodhi-dharma left for the East,

on the grand scale of conclusions high on a hill
shepherds guard their flock from the thorn bush
and the mountain lion,
the fishers of men
live down in the valley of the marketplace;
you will not understand this poem
and you'll go about your business
blaming someone else for what you'll
never understand until you can see
inside the magenta and chestnut brown
mid-summer hollyhock, bursting
with painted ladies, hummingbirds
and poems.

Haikuesque

Haikuesque No. 22

red tailed hawk
suspended
suddenly
swoops setting sun

~~~~~
Haikuesque No. 23
one legged,
heron meditates
gulps
river moon
rising
Is There a Doctor For the Soul
there is no cure
for this melodrama
there is blood on my fingers
where i touched your wounds,
you said we all have them
and some are well-hidden
some follow us with hound-dog eyes
inconsolable and lonely for his master,
the spirit of the wind
shakes the dream catcher
halfway to paradise
the parchment of this poem,
an unspoken sin
that catches fire,
our ashes rising,
sing.
Opening Inside a Chrysalis
opening inside a chrysalis
a downpour of thoughts
drenched with meaning
beyond what washes
the topsoil away,
you and I
are furtive plantings
at best,
mixing with the elements
the grandeur of life and death
in newborn fingers
grasp
at air
an insect melodrama
returns
spilling catharsis and benediction
with every struggling breath
copied and pasted
to load-bearing beams
of starlight
plastered like sweat
skin to skin,
we are lovers
reining in the night
with bliss
empty of dreams
that come not between,
we were parched with anger
once
thirsted and hungered
alone
blossoms erupted with the scent
of us
jealous Gods
following in the love
of our making
a consuming fire
my heart catches with
breath.
Peter Pan Nightmares On Chatham Avenue
out of sync the wheel
squeaks, too many little
brown mice with big mice ears
have chewed my bearings
a sunbeam sits on my
dislocated shoulder
and the cat's in the cradle
sleeping with the whole ball of wax
(what a yarn that is!)
i sharpen my nails and
dig in the posthumous dirt
of my arrival, coming
undone by the light of the silvery
moon, sprinkles melting on cupcakes
and newlyweds
it's nine yards and an inch,
hail hail all ye who enter
my sleep, prepare for Occam's
close shave, reality bites the dust
and then backtracks into ruts
of self-disclosure, counting crows,
mismatched socks, and coins for the
ferryman
watching
hi-def TV and writing poetry
that fall by the wayside, colours
of flesh and inhibition, the scent of lavender
honeysuckle and ginger blossoms pounding at my door:
wake up you crazy easy fool,
time is ticking and the crocodile is not
far away, your shadow is being dry-cleaned.
Gaia 'Haiku' For My Brothers and Sisters
Mother Earth and Father Sky
never deny their children
my brothers, sisters
~~~~~

how shall I make amends
when the stream gurgles with laughter
and the light chases the shadows away?

have I not denied you three times?
see how my tears of sorrow flow like rivers
in these lines that pass through
me
like poems

I leave behind my errant ways
meandering in your memories' breath
soon the stillness shall rise and shine,
I shall be resurrected in your thoughts.

Oh, What Can I Say, Question Mark

A lonely plane flies across this dark grey sky
engines lingering in my head
with the sound of falling leaves.

I've been here before, just before it rains.

I've crossed this threshold and I've written
this poem a thousand times
with the North wind hard against my face,
and the shades and nuances of the colours
of love drowning in the silence
between us.

All is mercurial, all breaks into polarity,
once your hands were magnets,
nothing can bring us together again.

Will this suffice for contest re Japan?

I have a problem with the original symbols for mountains--two black triangles are now two question marks. HELP!

Mother's Blessing

In the center, flesh
at her heart
red rivers
flow,

moss feet, soft
as wildflower fields
grow

canyons crayoned
stenciled against
mist and twilight

sky eyes, clouds
pass
through mountains
of moonlight,

Mother
bless me tonight.

This poem is for the earth who is Mother to us all, and for my Mother, how I miss her today.

Bukowski Sits On My Keyboard, Writes Bad Poetry

it's all your fault
that i got a rejection letter
the letters were wrong
and their order not right,
what was i thinking,
sending my thoughts out loud
to a Brit no less,
la di da
i digress
i just wasn't in proper dress
for the refusal,
metaphors all dressed up in
red silk and stiletto heels,
my panties in a bunch
in your pocket
Buk,
you've always told me the
truth,
shall i order hot dogs smothered
with onions and sauerkraut
from the vendor down Lorain Street
and write poetry on the napkin
i wipe with
send it, sealed with a kiss?

the eagle of my heart breaks
into its sojourn, and here i am
feeling like pay dirt, the sky
thunders, i think it's going to rain.
