The Dive

Under the deep blue
I watch the light emerge and break away
spinning with bubbles galloping ahead
as if to say, "It could be too late"
You are down here
and now the thoughts tear through the opening of my soul
and I see them,
my children
and I pray to escape the utter silence of the water
and memories of my mind
The top is so far away
I'm crawling up
my limbs spread through the cold water like an overturned crab
grasping for steadiness, straining for existence
Take me above to my life
darkness sees me and surrounds, swallows the air inside me
and waits
I begin to feel the quiet again
The flat sound, still, unyielding and breaking
My eyes pierce through the water and cut me
I see my children waiting for me
safely at home
while I drown in their sea

Cameron's Monday

His small face warmed the feathers beneath the pillow
and carved a likeness sure of itself
Dawn is here
The light comes for him although he does not welcome it
Legs stay wrapped and sweating around soft sheets
Hands float upward and surrender to sleep
Not today he dreams, not Monday
Today I will glide down the staircase guided by my thoughts of what is outside
I will watch the dogs and crush the leaves beneath my feet
school is so far away
I can see the sky now as the window chills my forehead
