Love Defined

Love Defined

You say you want to be with me
Then these truths you must know
Because, my love, you have to see
It’s more than the feeling we show

True Love does not want to control
It, instead, will yield and submit
From deep within the very soul
Where the flame of love stays lit

To me, it should always be you first
And you should put me first today
Though sometimes we hunger and thirst
I will show you the most excellent way

Love will wait as long as it takes
And return only kindness despite all
Contented in itself, and what it makes
It lives without the prideful fall

Love cannot disrespect you or me
And will never insist on having its way
Neither will it react wrathfully
It will forget the wrong of yesterday

Love does not exist in wicked deeds
But will flourish in what’s pure
It guards our hearts as delicate seeds
Ever faithful, it is always sure

Love is hope when we don’t see it
It stays the course when we fall
And will carry us out of the pit
Giving awesome joy to us all

Many have said it really hurts so
Though in truth that love is not real
For if it’’s true love, you’ll always know
It will be so much more than you feel

It is our imperfections, so hard to admit
That will cause love to take the blame
For love, perfect and pure, will never quit
It is us that want to make love a game

The Age of Innocence

The Age of Innocence

The age of innocence now far behind
The levels of love pass slowly by
The elusive joyous one to find
The drive diminishing to even try

Then a voice within cries out
This is not your time to despair
This is what it is all about
The love that teaches you to care

I do not understand this voice
I want, I need, I must receive!
In this there is no choice
I cannot accept this and believe

I am different from the rest
I have special needs to be fulfilled
I must be the one caressed
I must not give in or yield

To any voice that would demand
That I have not the love I desire
To have not these flames fanned
The flesh is what I strongly require

The flesh that will be my addiction
That comforts and elates
The constant need without restriction
To loyalty with mates

I must have these loving creatures
I cannot concern myself with lesser matters
I am not concerned with features
I am not concerned with a heart that shatters

This went on, such a frenzied life
Until the hearts that become the stone
That sharpens the love that cuts like a knife
Left me in pain, bleeding and all alone

The love I was addicted to
So fleeting and unfulfilling
Was not doing what it should do
And slowly I lost all feeling

I now began to look around
Suspended in time and space
Listening to life without a sound
With only myself to face

Then, as I trembled, a light revealed
The way to find love sublime
The many wounds can now be healed
As love flows outward time after time

There is a source to be found
The river of perfect love
That cannot by flesh be bound
The one that can only come from above

This is not my time to despair
This is what it is all about
The love that teaches me to care
And turn my life inside out

I still want the touch of a gentle hand
I desire the love but know
That love given without demand
Is the true direction of the flow

Now I have love without reservation
As the river washes away the fear
As it passes through me, in observation
I see the Age of Innocence very near.

Number Twenty Five

Number Twenty-Five

I was the newcomer to the group
A bored and hungry chauffeur
There on a cold day for hot soup,
Sandwich and the attitude de jour

The afternoons spent there are now
Among my favorite memories today
Because of the warm people and how
They encouraged and showed me the way

The Matriarch of number twenty-five
Was the petite, genteel Miss Shirley
A lady from Scotland, so very alive
But to see her, I’d have to be early

Then all the way from France
Was Jan: both sister and mother
My advisor as I’d give her the chance
A sweet lady much unlike any other

Paul and his wife were so cool
So encouraging, an inspiration
Their words would be a tool
Their marriage, my aspiration

There was Pam, the older sister
Who was so easy to talk to
Though I frequently missed her
I was always there on cue

Jeff, Stan and that one dude
Always kept conversation alive
Good company, good food
At Waffle House twenty-five

Infinite Love

Infinite Love

I was there the day he came home
He had been gone such a long time
Through many lands he did roam
And now he returned without a dime

I watched the somber look on his face
I felt his anxiousness; his fear
As he walked, he slowed his pace
To his father’s house he drew near

He had prepared a speech to give
He didn’t deserve to be called son
He didn’t even deserve to live
He knew all the wrong he had done

In the distance he heard his father shout
Surprised and perplexed, he waited
I then wondered what this was about
Soon my curiosity would be sated

His father ran up to him, embracing him
Not at all the reaction the man expected
The father then said how he’d missed him
Amazingly the man’s fear was not reflected

Stuttering and stammering he now stumbled
Flowing, the tears were in a steady stream
As he felt the love, he was so humbled
He had not imagined this, even in his dreams

I know the story of that man so well
Who receives forgiveness from above
The reason it was so easy to tell?
I am he, set free by an infinite love!

Churchian

Churchian

A Christian believes without seeing
A Churchian sees without believing
For faith brings dreams into being
But fear is your death conceiving

A Christian does not judge anyone
A Churchian gladly defines your sin
For God will judge all under the sun
None but He will be God then

A Christian follows rules out of love
A Churchian follows the love to rule
For humbly we will serve Him above
But if you serve self, you serve a fool

A Christian desires purity from above
A Churchian desires to be worldly cool
For a pure heart can be used for love
But love in darkness is a broken tool

A Christian repents and is forgiven
A Churchian compromises and justifies
For repentance, mercy is gently given
But sin is sin no matter what disguise

How long oh Lord before we can see
The differences that separate the two
For Lord, I know I can either of these be
So, Lord all I want is to be more like you!

God's Calling You Out

God’s Calling You Out

I was walking along one day
When I saw a truly awesome sight
A tall man in white began to say
“I will conquer all without a fight!”

These were big words for a city dude
Out here in this western town
Big talk like that gets a body viewed
Resting; permanently put down

He stood in the middle of the street,
His white coat blowing behind him
We stood frozen right down to our feet
As the light of day began to dim

We were now all hiding behind things
To protect us from all harms
Then mightily his voice sings
Praising God, he extends only his arms

One by one, he called to us all
You! Hiding in your work, come out
Embrace my love and stand tall
My dividends are bounds without!

You! Hiding behind your masks
Comedy and indifference alike
See that with love your tasks
Can be easy, like riding a bike

You! Hiding in your comfort zone
All nestled in fear and self hate
My love delivers; you’’ll not be alone
Take my hand and do not hesitate

You! Running away from me
What or whom do you run to?
As he spoke those words loudly
A terrible storm came into view

While we were standing there,
In the middle of that street
We were now fearfully aware
That our doom we might now meet

We looked to him, waiting
Then he moved toward us
I was not about hesitating
While others began to cuss

As I made my way to the man
Others ran for cover indoors
Once to Him, I took his hand
And saw His nail scarred sores

As I stood close to Him I saw
Only scars, no blood at all
But as I moved away it was raw
And blood began to fall

The others there could only see
That they were gonna die
They paid no mind to Him or me
I motioned now to those nearby

This man is our salvation I cried
And many moved toward us
And now with Him we abide
Our town had turned to dust

Here in the new town, we know
Beyond a shadow of a doubt
That he knows our towns will go
That’s why He’s calling us out!

Song's End

Song’s End

Every heart beating
Keeps time to a song
A story to tell
Set to it’s own music.
If only we will listen
There is so much to hear:
It begins with birth
In its innocence
In a song of discovery
So many wondrous things
A song that tells of dreams
While still crawling to a walk.
The song may lack maturity
At this stage
But it makes up for that
With sheer volume.
From there the songs change
In tempo and quality
Some become chaotic
While some define peace
Some send out cries for help
While others contain hope
Some sing songs of wisdom
But some of morbid destruction.
Throughout this world
There are many songs
Simultaneously playing
So many in fact,
That it is hard
To hear each song.
But there is One
Who was listening
Even at song’s end
Oh God how I wonder
About each song
That one who was so young
Whose song of innocence
Or those older that sang
Of love and wisdom
Was ended so quickly
Because of the music
Of selfish ambition
Silencing another’s beat
Here on earth forever.
My God why oh why
Would someone choose
Such a horrible sound
And make it their own?
Oh Lord you give us:
The beat,
The passion,
The instruments,
And such awesome direction
Why don’t we all just follow
Your loving lead,
Making heavenly music together?
And allow our songs
To gently fade into the twilight
That befalls us all
That leads into the new dawn
Lord, as I continue to sing
The song of this heart
I must move to make
Your music mine
And delight in your lyrics
In the rest of my day.
Help me oh Lord
To hear others songs
And let the beat
Of my heart be yours
For dear Jesus
None of us know
What time today
There will be
Song’s end.

Pools of Sapphire

Pools of Sapphire

It was a moment locked in time
The first time I saw her there
A moment inspiring me to rhyme
As I was lost inside the stare

There inside those pools of mystery
I saw such beauty all around
Never throughout my history
Had such beauty been found

The colors of the ocean
Filled with such exquisite life
So peaceful as we basked in the sun
No pain, no sadness, no strife

We walked the golden beaches
Holding hands, I smile as I see
The look that warmly reaches
Deep down into the soul of me

Each second was as a year
Incredible love we would share
Few words could I hear
In that glorious ten year stare

I was hers forever in just one year
My love gradually grew in year two
Three, the words I longed to hear
In four and evermore, “I love you”

Such joy we shared in year five
So naturally we belonged together
Our love making us glad we were alive
Our hearts light as a feather

Years six through nine were sublime
But it was ten that went so fast
Then I was slowly brought back
Only those few seconds had passed!

As we break the stare I see
The smile upon her sweet lips
I wonder if she was with me
In the land where time slips

In my dreams I see and feel
Those eyes that fill me with desire
To give to her, to yield my will
Floating in pools of sapphire

Necessary Evil

Necessary Evil

Cold and calculating, it thrives
On increasing dependency and knows
It will own you and your very lives
The more you love it, the less it shows

Use it for you and you will be used
Save it, building up false hopes
Abuse it and you will be abused
It has no mercy for foolish dopes

It is elusive, then fleeting when caught
It creates and destroys on a whim
It will insist that all may be bought
And seduce you when the odds are slim

It will demand itself as sacrifice
To reward even the heartless one
It is never enough to suffice
Because there is never enough fun

It is virtuous to those who have sung
It’s praises; to them it’s sweet honey
But money replaces love among
Those who are in love with money

It robs you of precious time
It tells you all is well
My message for it in this rhyme
Is that it can go straight to hell

In Reality

In Reality

Why do we presume such things
As the roles people must play
And that from commoners to kings
We must all behave in a certain way

That heroes are fearless is a tale
An image trying to make them more
They know bravery is scared as hell
Yet going on, even at death’s door

That those we elect to lead us
Should be able to serve us all
Is ludicrous - for none but Jesus
Can lead and serve without a fall

That parents have it all together
Under their laws we’re bound for life
Is an illusion creating stormy weather
It is tradition with time-honored strife

That those who teach in schools
Live only disciplined, honorable lives
Like us, these humans will break rules
Needing forgiveness, not verbal knives

That those who serve to protect us
 Military, police, medical and more
Are more perfect than just us
What might we do in uniform?

That priests and preachers for God
Lifted mystically above me and you
Are yours to “roast” at will - how odd
Because love is everyone’s job to do

We want to lift high and be near
People we envy, things we desire
While putting down those we fear
As we look, we are seen no higher

In reality we are all strong
In reality we are all weak
To the human race we all belong
God alone offers the truth we seek

Book: Reflection on the Important Things
