The Quiet One

The Quiet One

I'm the girl with the dark brown eyes
You don't notice the pain my smile belies
I'm not in your circle, I'm a friend of none
You only know me as...the quiet one

With each passing day, I've learned to accept
That no one will know of these secrets I've kept
I want to be brave, but I've nowhere to run
What would you expect from...the quiet one

I scream in silence, for there's no one to hear
You pass me in the hall, unaware of my fear
There's no escape, until my sentence is done
How do you think I became...the quiet one

My Father, My Friend

I wrote this poem for my dad, who had asked me to write him one. Since then, things have changed and we are no longer in each other's lives. But at the time, these words were truly from my heart.

My Father, My Friend

As a child I lived in a desolate world, one filled with sadness and pain.
I took comfort in the warmth of the sun, desperate to shake off the cold of the rain.
I longed for a shoulder to lean on, for someone to lovingly calm my fears.
Praying for a kind word, a reassuring smile, a gentle hand to wipe my tears.

Through the whisper of an Angels wings, He spoke to me one night in a dream.
He said, " Don't ever lose hope little one, you are never as lost as you seem."
And just when I was about to lose faith, you appeared in my life, an unexpected surprise.
This man I call father, this man I call friend;
a true miracle in disguise.

So I may not have always known you, but you were hidden there deep in my heart.
I believed one day you'd find me, for it was written long ago in God's chart.
He took the time to answer this child's prayer,
one He'd heard from Heaven above.
He promised me you, a father, a friend of my own, that someone to return my love.

Remember This

Remember This

I watched the sunrise
I couldn't sleep again
The tears that I cried
Lingering on my skin
It seems that all I can do
Is disappoint you
Why can't our love
Stay brand-new

Like
Holding hands
In the middle of the night
And waking up
To the morning light
To find that your kiss
Is still wet on my lips
I want you
To remember this

Your touch isn't the same
You've grown so cold
The bed feels so empty
Without you to hold
We used to laugh
We used to play
But you don't see me
In that loving way

Like
How you said
You thought I hung the moon
That you loved
When I sang out of tune
Just watching me move
Could make your heart skip
I want you
To remember this

What happened
To the love
We once shared
Do you think deep inside
It's still there
Is it gone for good
Never to be found
Or are we going in circles
Around and around

Like
Holding hands
In the middle of the night
And waking up
To the morning light
To find that your kiss
Is still wet on my lips
I want us
To remember this

Reflection

Reflection

I looked into the mirror
And saw the life I'd led
Before
Each memory a tiny ripple
In the water we simply call
Life
No matter how many times
I looked into my heart and
Soul
The reflection in the mirror
Never changed for me at
All

Remembering Me

Remembering Me

I dreamed of you once
You were just a child
Running through a field
Hair; tangled and wild

Reflections of the sun
Danced across your face
And I wondered aloud
How do I know this place

You sat down cross-legged
Under a magnificent tree
You were singing a song
With a familiar melody

I sang along; eyes closed
And tried to remember
When I had loved life
With as much fervor

Soft rain began to fall
So I joined you there
You made a daisy chain
And placed it in my hair

Ring-around-the-rosy
And hide-and-seek we played
Peek-a-boo and Simon says
A memory in time was made

I wish I could be like you
I whispered in the wind
Being free and young again
Enjoying games of pretend

I didn't think you'd heard me
You looked at me and smiled
I am you, you see here now
You've just been gone awhile

I'm a book you forgot you'd read
I've been hidden in your heart
Just take me out and dust me off
And you'll remember where to start

The Sparrow

Foggy
Drizzling rain
Droplets begin collecting
Marring the polished wood
Where the little sparrow stood

Windy
Trees swaying
Tears and mourners
Uplifting scripture is spoken
The sparrows soft cries awoken

Flowers
Sickingly sweet
Meals are delivered
Grieving friends from church
The windowsill the sparrows perch

Living
Seemingly stopped
Weeping at gravestone
Loss they can't abide
Faithful sparrow at their side

Time
Marching on
Sun creeps in
Tunnel fills with light
And the sparrow takes flight

Healing

It seems like yesterday
You were just here

If I close my eyes
I can still feel you near

Time has become an enemy
To my heart

I hate this absence
This being apart

In sleep
I long to see your face again

So you can tell me
Where you've been

To hear your laughter
To see your smile

I've not had that joy
In such a long while

People tell me
To go ahead with my life

But this pain in my soul
It cuts like a knife

They don't understand
My hurt, my loss

My life, once happy
Replaced with chaos

I catch myself sometimes
Calling your name

Then I remember
And I cry without shame

The day will come
When the tears will subside

But then I'll be left
With this aching inside

This too, shall heal
The storm will soon end

You weren't only my son
You were also my friend

I'll be with you again someday
This much is true

For the rain will cease,
And the sun will shine through

Until then,
When I'm feeling especially low

I'll look up to the Heavens
Then I'll know

The star that I see there,
Glowing with light

Is your way of assuring,
That I'll be all right

The Battles To Come

I looked out over the mountains
And an eagle soared by
I heard the whisper in its wings
Telling of the battles to come

I looked out over the ocean
And a whale surfaced nearby
I saw the sadness in its eyes
Telling of the battles to come

I looked out over the valley
And the people were all crying
I tasted the salt in their tears
Telling of the battles to come

I looked up to the heavens
And the skies were dark and grey
I felt the rain begin to fall
Telling of the battles to come

I looked into the faces of my children
And knew deep in my heart
That the battles that were coming
Would be the ones that they would fight

Someone Said Your Name Today

For Sarah

I have so many questions
As to why you've gone away
Maybe I'm not meant to know
Perhaps you couldn't say

I'll never see your smile again
Or see your eyes of brown
Someone said your name today
And the tears came pouring down

I won't pretend to know the pain
You must have felt inside
I only wish I'd been there
To hold you while you cried

I'll miss your jokes; your pranks
How your laughter sounds
Someone said your name today
And the tears came pouring down

My heart will always wonder
Why you didn't say good-bye
I wasn't ready to let you go
To spread your wings and fly

Although I'll see you in Heaven
My sorrow still abounds
Someone said your name today
And the tears came pouring down

If only I had one more day
To spend with you my friend
I'd share how much you mean to me
A blessing you have been

I know you're safe with Him now
The Keeper of the Crown
But someone said your name today
And the tears came pouring down

Dying

You think she's strong inside
But you'd be terribly wrong
She's like a bird with a broken wing
Who's too hurt to sing her song

Her heart has slowed its beat
Her spirit can no longer fly
She holds bravely onto the pain
Until the only thing left is to die

Light slowly fades from her eyes
As she draws her last earthly breath
And the love she'd once given freely
Taken with her in sweet peaceful death
