Filling the Void

Empty inside and out,
an endless pit.
Hollow… a shell of what once was.
Not pretty.
Never good enough…
unresolved pain and guilt
of the past.
Going through the motions of life.

Shadows welcome me
and call me lover.
Deceived of what's real,
I give them my all…they grin.
Used and taken advantage of…
Temporary relief.
The void grows.

A little voice
distant and gagged
whimpers in a spinning mirror
in the nothingness.
A reflection only…
I wallow in loneliness.

The light…a dull memory.
No care or emotions given… or thought.
Tries to penetrate the blackness.
The shadows laugh and jest…
taking my self-worth and time.

Curious and concerned, it
asks questions.
Easily dodged,
by misguided trust and deceit,
…miss their target.

Voices of reason and love
catch a reflection unseen before
sends a single beam of light towards the
source.

The gag of the silenced reflection
disintegrates… a scream.
The inner child
is heard…bursts with blinding light.
Shattering the mirror…
sending the shadows to the depths.

A burning pain ensues,
Awoken once more,
love oozes from the sleeping heart
and merges with the light.

Conscious awareness brightens
the eyes and reveals truth…
intensifying the guilt of the past.
“I did it again” helps the darkness
creep back in.
You lower your head…
defeat is close.

Something raises your chin,
steady and confident.
The warmth of the lips
fuels the light.
A whisper…
“You and Me.”

The void dissipates…
but is a constant reminder of
what could have been?

Into the Blue

Blue as the ocean,
Deep they penetrate.
Searching for the truth behind the iris.
The past is a reliance, but not the end.

A swimmer he must be.
To weather my storms within.
Torrents of rain and massive waves I send with
thoughts.

To let go and let it be is the true test.
A calming voice tames the blue.
Trust lets you make headway to my beautiful island…
starts the bond.

Landfall, lets him explore the white beaches of vulnerability;
Cautious, though, to raise the sea…to swim again.
Beautiful colors dance and twirl.
Fairies play an Irish tune that flush the cheeks.

Onward you trek through the betrayed jungle and the desert of love to reach
the heart of the island.
A fortress of granite looms before you…makes you timid.
Empty armor of those lovers fallen litter the ground.

What makes him different from those that failed?
Instead of forcing his way in or scaling the walls,
This one listens
To your wants and needs.

The ground trembles,
Rocks cascade and crumble.
Revealing the key to each other’s happiness;
Seeing the value and worth in each other.

Beyond Reach

Beyond Reach

Conceived out of wedlock to a stranger or betrothed.
Hidden from familiar voice.
Stress makes you kick and squirm.
Afraid of what's to come in…
out of the light.

Sadness felt through the navel.
Water droplets echo like a dripping faucet in your cell(s)…tears.
Wishing you were bigger and stronger to escape like your mother.
In a prison awaiting your death sentence.

The ultimate secret are you,
to keep the faithful from leaving.
No vote…
No voice…
No choice…
Just a cry in the dark.

Flaws of Worth

A rock as hard as granite,
Yet a pebble in the flow of life.
All shapes and sizes come and tumble by.
Satisfaction and contentment when alone
To ponder and digest the information of the day.

The soul becomes restless.
Wanting to be free; to wander and explore,
Yet imperfections impede the progress fully.
Thus, searches for a match of worth with passersby.

A masquerade it must have been
To think of finding thy mate.
Mated to one with endless, jagged, and pointy flaws
Who hurt your worth… abate.

Stuck fast in the present;
Too long you’ve settled in.
Groomed by deceit and lies
Has weathered the shape.

Yet an explosion from a hoof of fate,
Dislodges in a cloud of sand and muck.
To be free once more
Down the stream of life.

Beautiful Dove

I take you out with gentle finger,
To coo and comfort my tortured soul.
Nuzzling your beak against my cheek.
Gives me goosebumps and comfort from
Thought.

Mesmerized by your tranquil feathers,
Makes me yearn to be free.
To soar with you in the clouds.
We could be magnificent together, yet
You’re caged until healed from a broken wing.
Sadness, uninvited, is a noxious vine planted
In my heart.

I must heal as well,
To be better for you.
We may one day rule the skies together,
And look down upon the world
Left behind.
Stronger, purposeful, to the end of our days.

The Winter Rose

Planted a decade ago, the first of three.
Guided by a loving hand with gentle wind and water to prevent drooping and wilting.
Still beautiful when thorns prick from uncontrolled change.
Listens tentatively to the sun to grow, yet seeks more independence in the clouds.
Magnificent is the color when in bloom.
Proud, I am, of what you’ve become.

Today, of all days, you will be in bloom on this winter day.
To feel loved and cared for…special to be called from class.
Sent to you, the same flower, as you represent to me…
On Valentine’s day!

An Existential Curiosity

Rocking back and forth with a Magellan hat, Lennie prepares for sailing.
Incoherent babbling is heard from the explorer on all fours.
Items of existential curiosity, once seen from afar and distant, are now within reach.
Unbeknownst of this capable ability are those that keep watch, giggles to self.
Driven by wonder, soft thudding perks the ears of the canine companion.
The pain of fence posts cutting through tissue leaves a snail trail on the floor.

Finally making landfall, the little giant scales rectangular glass framed in wood.
Pauses, send deafening echoes to the villagers safe inside, stunned in silence.
Bored of this impenetrable defense, climb further to the cliff edge to peer over the brim.
A village made of logs, glittered snow that sparkles on hand, little people frozen in time.
With a reverse Midas touch, ends the curse of the village with the gift of flight.
Awoken, the God and keeper of the village imprison your curiosity in a netted cage.

Valentine

Embers of love glisten like the stars in winter’s solace.
Nurtured by the winds of validation.
A testament of our strength as one.
To keep fighting for warmth and longing;
Our embers will never cease trying.
To reignite the fire that was lost through the cold and loneliness.
I give you my chiseled heart to lay upon your embers.
My love, my person, on Valentine’s day.

Exhausting Love

Love is a fickle thing
When your needs aren’t met.
Straying is an option,
But not for the faithful.
They believe in the words once spoken.
Deep roots embedded for generations.
Modeled for those knee-high and older.
To have healthy, safe love.
Who seek the truth behind those not vulnerable.
Desirable, affectionate, and successful they will be
Tired from all the love they’ll receive.

Musk

A wet floor sign now
Where you once stood.
Lightheaded from the intoxicating scent.
Knees weak and trembling.
Dopamine hits like a truck.
Addicted now to the source.
Nose flares in search.
Sweat beads on the forehead.
Desire drives the urge…

You move the mop bucket to the next aisle…
