That Fleeting Instant

You happen through the moments of your life,
Stepping from one worry to the next.
You plod along seeking your solace
From those who hurt the same as you.
You turn from them
Because they don’t really get you.
And then suddenly,
Something jolts you:
A panorama of impossibly varied vernal green
In the sudden sunny warmth;
Or a kind word from someone who does
Know just what you mean.
You know for that fleeting instant
That you’re actually okay;
That you have a noble place
Amongst the greens, the warmth,
Everyone.

The Art of Ai Weiwei

A hundred million poems in a single space,
Myriad sunflower seeds spread the place,
Each one a story to unfold,
Made by souls with lives untold.

Five hundred and fifty thousand coloured Lego dots,
The ceramic spouts of two hundred thousand pots,
The steel from ruins of a deadly quake,
A company named Fake.

Your reality is jokey but I can’t ignore
That it shouts a truth oft spoken before.
It makes a link we instantly know
And then the memory is forever so.

You challenge power fearlessly
Yet change your argument endlessly.
"We see everything and we don’t see anything.”
But making sense, you show us something.

Inner Chimp

I have an impish inner chimp
Alive within my soul.
I am quite mean with time for him
But sometimes let him play.
If he gets out it’s drinks all-round
(My shout).
He suggests all kinds of s**t;
But whenever he’s the cause if it
There’s happiness and wit.
Remorse is often soon behind
His times of out and free.
He’s naughty, sure but handy too:
He takes the blame from me.

Please Persist With Poetry

Please persist
With poetry,
Though you stand accused
Of wasting precious time
On the silly art of rhyme.

You have a task,
You poets.
Of re-presenting life,
The essence to attain
Thus making real again.

You live for others,
Via poetry.
Watching with all senses,
Hearing with emotions
And feeling through expressions.

You forge a link,
Through poems.
With lilting turn of phrase
And silky sequinned word
You make your reason heard.

You sow a seed
With poems.
So whoever cares to read
The slender lingual links
Will grow as your heart thinks.

You share yourself
In poems.
Laying bare your inner life,
Engaging our humanity
And so voiding your inanity.

You shift our views
With poetry.
Evading common sense
And using verbal dancers
To question all our answers.

So don’t give up
On poetry.
You owe it to yourself
To probe your mind with artistry
And weave your oral tapestry.

Pomegranate

Arid, bony-shanked carapace.
Shiny, weathered patina
tells of desolation,
Belies any promise of richness;
Yet when inverted,
Becoming regal.
A tatty, crown implies
The ancient purport.

Tough, yet easily-torn in avarice.
Revealing, inner passion
Shrieks fecundity and blood,
Gleams with shiny liveliness;
Yet when sundered,
Serried jewels.
A secret, inner-order shows
The abundant warrant.

Red, a study of translucence.
Deep-hued, each perfect gem
Fades to stalk-umbilicus,
Foretells the unborn orchard;
Yet when amassed,
Bitter-sweet.
A fruitful sumptuousness gives life
The noble pomme grenate.

Have You Ever?

Have you ever paused to skim a stone
And considered the interplay of physics, frolic and force?
Have you ever driven a car to an new place in an unknown country
And been awed by the meshing of technology, wanderlust and law that made it doable?
Have you ever seen a dance with partners intertwined to music
And pondered on the reasons why?
Have you ever had a moment of passion that lead to your own addition to the global gene pool
And marvelled at that coincidence of impulses?
Have you ever contemplated the string of happenstance that led you, to be here,
In this very spot, reading this?
Whatever your conclusions, they matter not a jot.
What matters is your wonder
And feeling of joy in being just a tiny part of this infinite intricacy;
Delight in this universal tapestry of unending motion.

Have You Ever? II

Have you ever paused to skim a stone,
Seeing the interplay of physics, frolic and force?

Have you ever driven to a place unknown,
Meshing technology, wanderlust and law?

Have you ever danced with your own,
Moved by rhythm, play and gladness?

Has ever a moment’s passion shown
You your part in the infinite pool of being?

What string of happenstance brought you, alone
To here, this spot, reading this?

Whatever your answers, whatever their tone,
They matter not a jot!

What matters is that you have grown,
Feeling joy as part of the infinite intricacy;

Delight that the universal tapestry has been thus sewn.
