A Solid Nine

She asks me to rate my pain on a,
He asks how much I love him on a,
Now please rate your professor on a,
What would you say your mood is on a
One to ten scale, one being the worst.
Everything, at it's best, gets a nine.
I want to believe there will always
be something better in my future.
I'm saving my ten for forever.

Black and White

I grew up in a home that was so black and white,
but mostly white because we were taught to hide from the dark.
I've spent every moment since I walked out that door
trying to crank the dial on life's saturation up past max,
desperately trying to compensate for all of the colors that I missed.
At an age, young enough that I can't recall the exact number,
I was told that I could lose my place in the family,
through the wrong color.
You see, I didn't yet know that there was a wrong color,
especially a wrong color to love.
I still, don't know, that there is a wrong color,
I haven't found it, and I've experienced a lot of colors.
I wouldn't go so far as to say I've been looking for it,
but I've certainly been trying every color on until I find it.
I left my father a six-pack and a letter,
asking him to start drinking before he starts reading
when I finally decided to try on the rainbow.
You see, I wasn't trying to cause a problem
but as I said, I only know black and white.
I'm trying to clear up all of that gray area
and the thing about cleaning things up is,
sometimes you get your hands dirty in the process.
So I'm now elbows deep in the process
and I promise you I'm not going to stop.
When the space is clear,
I'm going to paint this room every color
that I learned to love.
Every color, because I learned to love.

Shift

Early in life, I found you so cruel.
There was never a day that you wouldn't pull,
tear at my body and poke at my mind,
terrorizing me with whatever you find inside.

Finally came a day that I was so tired of the noise.
I pulled at my hair and then raised my own voice.
“I'm tired of this. I won't listen anymore.
Talk to me kindly or walk out that door!”

Suddenly, all at once, I felt this shift.
Something inside of me finally clicked.
Everything went quiet for a moment or two
before I took the time to really listen to you.

“Take just a moment and let yourself forgive
all of the bad things that you think you ever did.
Only then is there a chance for you to see
that the one that's been cruel is you, not me.”

I paused for a moment to consider this thought,
this new perspective that my conscience had brought.
The next time it spoke, I was doing no good.
I was treating someone far worse than I ever should.

“My dear, please take a moment and check on yourself.
This isn't a judgment. I'm just here to help.
If you keep up this act, you're sure to cause harm.
Start acting your truth. It works like a charm.”

I kept myself quiet until it was done,
then took the words in without a feeling along.
Strangely enough, the message wasn't so mean.
It's quite nice, in fact, from what I can see.

Maybe all of this time, it has really been true.
I've been mean to myself and just blaming you.
If I listen to this voice while it guides the way,
I keep feeling more like myself every single day.

Sing To Me Saturn

Send me up into space to live in the night sky.
Along Saturn's rings, I'll dance along to my own beat.
Turning in circles as I pretend the planets revolve around me
Until I slip off the edge and float away.
Running into stars as I make my way through space
Neptune is next, and then Mars another day.

Blue Hole

I've always had this fascination with becoming blind.
I think sometimes that's why when I walk I find
myself running my hands over every little thing,
seeing what it feels like so I'll know what it is.

What scares me the most is that if you can't see,
you never know where your hand will be.
You may find it in a hole that's ten feet deep.
It glistens dark blue and has this energy
that sweeps you up and pulls you inside
to a magical world where you can hide.
You're away from the world, surrounded by blue
and trying desperately to get back to feeling more “you”.
Then, one day you find that you can climb your way out
and you no longer need to feel fearful or doubt.
So you play in this world, surrounded by blue,
having eyes that can't see but a heart that is true.
When finally, it's time, you feel a gentle buzz,
you come back to the world and join the rest of us.

I close my eyes and run my hand over a hole.
I pretend that it's blue and has that same pull.
I imagine myself getting swept far away
into a magical land full of love and play.
