The Battle Between Light and Dark

I saw a light shining down on me
Thought it was the end of time.
And I just couldn’t let it
I turned to face the bringer
But he just walked away
Maybe now I can live to fight another day.

Wax and feathers won’t stand the test of time
Falling like a stone only to be shot out again
If you can’t stand your captors, then don’t do the crime
I can’t walk away this time
In silence here I stand alone
Climbing the walls is the only thing we can do.

Then darkness fell all around the town
I heard the sound of heartbeats all at once
Screams rang out long into the night
Voices rising and falling
Now after all, it could all end here
Then I heard nothing but the sound of silence.

All of a sudden a light began to appear
A million eyes all opening at once
It was nothing like anything I had seen before
But there was hesitation and apprehension
It all seemed to land on one man’s decision
I want to believe, I want to smile
And then the doors open and I see a new Eden.

Nobody's Child

Where was I born, who do I know,
All that I own is all here on show.
I’m nobody’s child, a child of the street,
Does that make me wrong, am I incomplete?

The beginning was the end for me,
It was all downhill for all but me to see.
I reached out for the sun and moon,
Not knowing that soon, they would both be in tune.

The drunken, shaking hand rises up again,
Leaving me alone with my new pain.
I only wanted to show that I can grow,
Have I learn’t more than I should know?

I can not cry, I can not show any fear,
I haven’t cried at all this year.
What is happiness, alcohol knows no limits,
The futures not bright if I’m not in it.

As sure as the night will follow the day,
I’m destined to wander, you know I won’t stay.
The road is my bible, the stars my guide,
From winged creatures, I must run and hide.

I’m nobody’s child, asleep at the wheel,
Uppers and Downers, I will pop any pill.
Into the darkness, awake to the end,
How do I know that you are my friend?

I never looked for two paths, even when I had a choice,
I can hear so many people talking but only one voice.
I can not get even, let alone even the score,
I’m nobody’s child, do you see anything more?

The holes in the floor are round and not square,
Sometimes I think that they are not there.
Where do I stand and where do I go,
I’m nobody’s child, does it really show?

There is someone standing over me, smiling bright,
I am pulled in two directions, from the dark to the light.
Maybe I wasn’t that bad, it wasn’t all my fault,
I’m nobody’s child, perhaps I just wasn’t caught.

Another Time, Another Place

The clock on the wall doesn’t chime anymore,
But its dust dances long into the night.
No-one stares at the hands of time more than once,
And lives to tell the tale.

I saw a reflection in the mirror
But the face looking back wasn’t mine.
I tried to search for the answer
But it was another place and another time.
There are too many holes in my memory
Like Swiss cheese melting in the midday sun.
My life is forever spiralling out of control
Like a tangled piece of string.
You can find one end opening up to you
The other closed like a coiled spring.

I found myself at the crossroads
Looking for a path that no one has been before.
I’ve collected footsteps before dawn
And searched for a million rainbow ends.
I’ve danced in the rain with strangers
Laughing at nothing funny at all.
Realised that even lonely people are never alone
Is it our destiny to rise and fall?

Stone hearts are two a penny
They rise and fall to the sound of silence.
Don’t look over your shoulder at the past
It can catch you faster than you will know.
I thought I saw your face in a window
But it must have been another time and place.

We might pass each other in a different lifetime,
Not giving a second glance to each other.
The mirror falls silently from the wall
Never to reveal its true reflection.
It is like climbing up the wall and jumping off
And forever falling into the void.
You must wake up before you hit the ground
Or be forever in another time and place.

The Day the Circus Came To Town

As I looked out of my window across the village green,
Who could ever imagine the sight that was to be seen?
The circus came to town today, filled with love and pride,
All the children ran to see it, no-one tried to hide.

The elephants were standing there, holding each others tail,
The lions and the tigers look like they were all in jail.
The clowns with painted faces, smiling and falling about,
Roll up, roll up, tonight the night, the ringmaster was heard to shout.

We bought our ice cream and hot dogs and went to find our seat,
Excited as the lights went down, we clapped hands and stamped our feet.
First came the lion tamer, he cracked his whip and held a chair,
I watched as he made them sit then stand, ran his finger through his hair.

Next up was the trapeze act, flying so high off the ground,
Leaping through the air, twisting and turning around.
The sea lions playing with beach balls and honking on the horns,
Monkeys having a tea party, eating cake and messing up the lawns.

The elephants enter next, up roaring with their trunks,
They stagger across the floor like some giant drunks.
They stand on hind legs gracefully and swoon and take a bow,
We stare at them in awe and respect; they look like a grey cow.

Then the high wire act walks on a rope suspended 50 foot in the air,
We gasp and close our eyes but we just have to stand and stare.
A man is fired from a cannon, landing on the other side in a net,
We knew he’s done this lots of times, they haven’t missed him yet.

The clowns arrive in a funny car exploding in clouds of smoke,
We laugh at them with buckets of water, what a funny joke.
The custard pies fly everywhere; we have to make sure we duck,
If we keep our eyes open, they’ll miss us with any luck.

So now it’s nearly over, the grand finale comes to an end,
We all stand up and clap and cheer and shout for our new friend.
Time to gather our belongings and head out of the big top,
Sawdust memories, tigers and lions roar, we really had the lot.

Poem For Her

I was looking at the moon and thinking
Of a time that was far away.
I turned and saw your face,
It’s the face that makes me want to stay.

Such an incredible smile,
That lights up a grey and gloomy day.
I want to hold you tightly
And drive all your demons away.

I’ll catch a rainbow
And put it in my eyes for you.
I’ll keep you from crying,
And make sure that you are never blue.

When all the colours run like water,
And the room spins round and round.
And the light and dark conspire
To lift me off the ground.

I look into the distance,
And see you standing there.
I’m looking for all the answers,
But are the questions really fair.

I hear your voice on the wind,
Calling my name for sure.
I turn and try to hold it,
But it slips away once more.

You seem to inspire me,
And know what life’s for.
We are new friends,
Maybe one day we’ll be more.

Tiger Tiger

I met you once before,
But you were all on fire.
We passed on the Spanish stairs,
Couldn't you take me any higher?
Well who are you?
What do you want from me?
I'm not blind,
But I really can't see.
The one that I love has no vision,
But she can see.
She thinks I'm a clown,
She thinks, "He's no good to me".
Well, I floated for so long,
That I thought I was dead.
Now I know that something incredible
Is trapped inside my head.

I don't want any money,
And I don't need any fame.
I want to find out what I did
But do I want to do it again?

I've been to hell and
I've been to places much worse.
My name is now a burden,
My life must carry a curse.
Haunted by my unknown past,
But still I must go on.
Hunted by just about everyone,
So I'm always on the run.
Jaunting through time
And jaunting through space.
I've got to keep moving,
I can't stay in one place.
I'm only one step ahead
And they're closing in fast.
I'm getting very tired,
I don't know how long I can last.

My brain hurts a lot and
I know someone is close to me.
I don't know where to go,
I know they won't let me be.
The stairs were on fire,
As we passed with outstretched hands.
Trying to hold each other,
Pushing back the grains of sand.
We both knew that we were
Really different worlds, apart.
I only had to look at the burning man,
Didn't even know where to start.
Please let it out of my head,
The secret that could explode.
I don't want to end up blind,
Stranded on that road.

Where is that Spanish stair now?
And can I still reach it?
Do I see pain or is there
Pleasure beneath it?
The fire that burns Is out of control now.
I try to hide my face
From the flames in the Jar now.
But her face is a memory
And it is melting away.
I ask for her hand,
But I've nothing more to say.
She pulls it back and
A tear falls from her eye.
Her head falls as she motions to me,
Goodbye, goodbye.

I don't want any money,
And I don't need any fame.
I want to find out what I did
But do I want to do it again?

Even Death Cries Sometimes

I don’t want to go
It can’t be my time yet
Please give me the choice of two paths
Darkness is closing in on me
I close my eyes
But they are not really closed
I hold my ears
But I still hear the screams
I’m walking away
But my feet are not moving
How did I get here?
Where is this place
His hand is reaching out for me
But I don’t want it
I look into his lifeless eyes
As he reluctantly pulls back his hand slowly

It’s too close to home
Scenes that are heartbreaking to watch
But we are cocooned in our own little world sometimes
To really care
To really feel
To really do
But today it could have been me
I watch the TV
I listen to the radio
A story unfolding of
Heartless, faceless people
My heart sinks for a moment
I look into his lifeless eyes
Maybe even Death cries sometimes.

This was written about the London Bombings, I had all the words down but did
not have a title. Then I watched the film Meet Joe Black. In the film Brad Pitt plays
Death and at the end he cannot have the one love he wants and he cries, I
thought to myself, ‘Even Death cries Sometimes’ and the title came.

Just a World Away

She walked back into his world,
After being away so long.
She thought she could run into his arms,
Just like an old love song.
But life isn't like that,
You have to live from day to day.
She thought she was in control,
But she was really just a world away.

He never turned his back on her,
He read the signs all wrong.
Thought he had it made,
Couldn't have been so wrong.
She just smiled and shook her head,
And then she left him all alone.
His world came crashing down,
But she's only just a world away.

They drove out without a thought,
Not knowing who they would see.
They didn't stop for anyone,
I didn't think they could fool me.
But I waited in that night,
I saw the murder on T.V.
I knew then that she had gone,
Now she's more than just a world away.

Running On Empty

You're so distant
And yet so near.
Sometimes I wish
I could change my year.
I want to be with you
I wish you were mine.
But here in the real world
Friends is fine.

I've stood on a mountain
I've swallowed the sea.
So many came looking
But they couldn't find me.
I told all my stories
They hung me up high.
As they walked away laughing
It wasn't my goodbye.

See me on a runaway train,
Running out of tracks.
You can't stop me turning round,
Filling in all the cracks.

Caught you on Fifth Avenue
Hustling, to find your way.
So high that you didn't see me
Only thought it right to pay.
Motel rooms, look all the same
Blowing like a sea breeze.
Left a scar in my memory
With you down on your knees.

Faith and hope and charity
Standing by my side.
Four modern horsemen
Being taken for a ride.
Did I get back too late?
Has the damage all been done?
It seems that we've evolved
From the needle to the gun.

See me on a runaway train,
Running out of tracks.
You can't stop me turning round,
Filling in all the cracks.

Why did they all ignore me?
I can't believe I cried.
Doesn't any one remember?
The day that Kennedy died.
Where were you in ‘63?
Did you want to be alone?
I never thought of calling
All you had to do was phone.

Now I cry myself to sleep
Only myself to blame.
I told them all I was fine
No one guessed I was insane.
I held the world in my hands
I though that I had plenty.
No-one on the outside
Can see I'm running on empty.

See me on a runaway train,
Running out of tracks.
You can't stop me turning round,
Filling in all the cracks.
