Let's Talk About Money

Let's talk about money, honey
That sour flower, that power to devour
The corrupt disruption of consumption
Let's face the disgrace of that gilded tower

Let's concede when greed exceeds need
That green paper's vapor, that seductive speed
The addict's cruel fall into possession depression
The coin rules all, as the greater dictator

For this unjust trust, thank the banks
Who cajole your soul, in exchange for coal.

Mama

Your part in me
Is not in part but a whole
Your soul nurtured mine
When I was an 'it'
Your patience to carry
My grace of calling you Mama...

Mama...
In my trying beam
My body singe, hot coal
Your soul shelters my soul fine
Divinely teach me to be fit
If it were possible, you I'd marry
My grace of calling you Mama...

Mama...
You have a heart of gold
Your teaching of love
Makes me stand strong and bold
They are true from above.

Thank you...
For God...For you
My grace of calling you Mama...

Gift of Poverty

My mother would sit there,
And watched as we ate,
She lied about eating,
As we cleaned our plate...
The clothes that we wore,
Were ones that she made,
Since she couldn’t afford,
After bills were all paid...
And I still remember,
Me shoveling coal,
While others used oil,
For heat through the cold...
So the room that we shared,
Would always stay warm,
While plastic taped windows,
Would hold back the storm...
Many will tell you,
That I grew up poor,
But poverty blessed us,
With gifts that meant more...

( Thank you mom now I see )

My Treasures

6:35 am 17 May 2014

God morning my friends and family
where ever in the world you may be

May your day be blessed into the night
May you awake with a heart filled with Gods light

May you bless all others in a positive way
Not just today but every single day

Your lives are worth what you contribute from your hearts
So give kindness and forgivness and mercy to start

Be humble and caring and give love to all
Then when you go home you will not want to hide, before the Father you will stand tall

Like a diamond formed from a lump of coal
You will shine as your story is told

Thank you all from my heart and soul
You are priceless to me you are the treasures I hold

Grandma's Arms

I remember long ago when I was just a child
Climbing into Grandma’s arms and the way she smiled
She’d hold me close and rock me, kiss me on my head
When I’d fall asleep she’d gently put me in my bed

There was a coal stove in the kitchen used for cooking and for heat
When Grandpa picked blueberries, she’d bake us a special treat
For the little things in life, we would thank the Lord above
We had more than what we needed, we were enriched by love

While Grandma was doing wash, I would be playing on the floor
Sometimes we’d take a walk down to the grocery store
After supper she’d be tired and sit down in the rocking chair
I’d climb into Grandma’s arms. I was always happy there.

Life's Cup of Joe

No sugar, no cream,
jet-black and bitter;
nothing to enhance the taste.
That's how
I like the truth,
in all its forms.
Just give it to me straight!
The more bitter, the better!
No sugar,
yes, let it stay bland
No cream
to change the hue
to cafe au lait.
That's how
I like my dose of reality
That's how
I like justice
That's how
I like my friendships
and relationships.
That's how
I like promises made
I love life's cup of joe
black as coal
so I can taste the beans!
I don't care
If my taste buds disapproves.
No sugar, no cream.
I want it's true flavor.
I want it to linger
on my palate.
Please and thank you!
As for a cup of joe itself,
Sure, I'll take sugar
and cream...

You

You are a refreshing breeze
Making me weak in the knees
You're the 'thank you' to my 'please'
The 'bless you' when I sneeze

You make me whole, complete
You are my mental retreat
You, I'll never show deceit
My worry you defeat
And we just can't be beat

You own my heart and my soul
My heart a lump of coal,
Now a diamond you have stole
It's under you're control

It's crazy I have found you
And now I must be around you
And though my love, it may confound you
I'll use my passion to astound you

You are the reason I feel
A reminder that love is real
Past wounds of mine you help heal
All of my doubts and worry you steal

You, have shown me real love
An angel sent from above
Warming my heart like a glove
You show me peace, you are my dove.

The Heavens Be Praised

We no longer immolate babes on Moloch’s hideous altar.
May Heaven be thanked.
We no longer burn heretics at the stake.
May Heaven be praised
We no longer stone men and women for committing adultery.
Thank Heavens for that!
We no longer subject defendants to trial by ordeal.
We no longer engage in witch hunts.
We no longer hang men for stealing sheep
We no longer make children work in coal mines.
We no longer keep slaves.
For all these things may the Heavens be thanked.

Thus many forms of cruelty and oppression have been abolished, and yet
Today’s evils, the real whoppers, are hermetically concealed behind white walls and bland, sincere faces.

To what strange deity, utility, necessity, security are we prepared to immolate not only ourselves, noble suicides, but our children, our babes, our future.
Whom would we then have to thank?

Dear Meneer

As I land,
You hold my hand
As I fall,
You stand me tall

You opened my eyes
Removed my icecap of blindness
To expose my inner core
And showed me that I’m worth so much more

As I bend,
You mould
As I cry,
You show me the how and the why

About the apeman
That added one plus one
As I live and breathe, I evolved
His greatest gift to the world, is love

As I play,
You knelt to pray
As I itch,
You took a stick to teach

As I scratch my head in class
You stretch my mind like hot glass
The mystery of the life was made clear
A seed of knowledge planted where there was only fear

As I raise my hand to reach
You enrich,
As I reflect on your impact
You’re my retrospect

We waste as the greenhouse effect
We burn in crude oil as dinosaurs went extinct
And as mining coal is our goal
We mirror smoke and turmoil

Thank you,
Mnr. Hilary Ramokgopa

Coal Mine

They were working in a coal mine
six miles below the ground
We hit a pocket someone yelled
then the walls came tumbling down

They could not see through all that dust
as they scrambled to get out
The shaft was sealed with tons of rock
"we're trapped" came someones shout

Within three hours the dust was gone
thank god no one was hurt
They sat there staring endlessly
at those tons of rock and dirt

We're here for good a man cried out
"start praying" someone said
Don't give up, there's always hope
no matter what you dread

A miner took a shovel and pick
and headed down the shaft
You're going deeper someone yelled
"I know, I feel a draft"

They heard him digging in the dark
the lanterns growing dim
Then someone yelled, as a brilliant light
shone blindly right past him

Some miners yelled and others cried
"my god this can't be true"
For there alone was a world beyond
the wall that man broke through......

A Salute To Brian

Twas a lovely day in May.

A red-haired Grandmother, with her daughter and
grandchild strolled the soft, still grass.
Under a large pine tree, she unwrapped a beautiful pot of flowers.
In the center~ a flag waved softly in the gentle, Midwest winds.
They proceeded to a marble headstone with a gentle walk.
Not one of them had the need to talk.
Kneeling at the headstone~ she placed her head upon it.
Telling her husband, his family was all here for a visit.
Assuring him that they missed and loved him.

She then spoke....angelically:
" Brian, thank you for keeping our country so wonderfully free!
But alas at breakfast now, it's only me!
Brian, my Airman and eagle of my soul.
I miss your dark eyes that sparkled like anthracite coal."

She kissed the headstone as if herway to say,
She would be back soon~another day!

Groan

I'd stopped to have a rest on our morning jungle trek
and had leaned against a liana covered tree
in this land I was a stranger and I didn't see the danger
that was lurking just a foot away from me.
With the pinpoint lightning strike like a fencer's foil might
it attacked, then a hiss, and it was gone
it's fast acting Dendrotoxin knocked me out like I'd been boxing
but thank God I had my guide to call upon.
The doctor checked my throat and got out some antidotes
though he didn't know what species had attacked,
but my guide had took a shot, and the photo he had got
would be proof enough to back up all the facts.
The doctor took a look and consulted in a book
after leafing through the pages he declared
“ You're lucky to be here, it's a species to be feared
and if it had been me, I'd have been scared”.
I went white as a sheet, he said “ it's length is fourteen feet
coal black eyes, scales lime green, belly of amber,
but the crown on it's head confirms to me without a doubt
you've been bitten by a lifetime premium Mamba.”

If You Ask Again

If you ask again
I will never validate a wrong
If you ask
If you ever dare
To contest beyond the muted tongue
Of your self reluctance to yield
Dare to doubt the validity
Of the sanctuary
And ask for answer from my pity
The purpose of the church
Even if heaven
Was only to be some measure of joy
For the weary broken castaway
Outside the granite door
Of our marble ambivalence
Between the diamond and the coal
Not to say that mere sparkle
Is more useful than warmth
Glowing from the sprinkle of some love
But if you ask
Validating your irrationality
Against the greed of prelate
And the follies of erring priest
You licensed
To vicariously become
The wingless wing of winging dreams
Tumbling down the stairs of your belly
If you really want to know
Look at these forgotten one
That find where each scraps of mercy flow
From the iron mountain of the heart
And thank them
For the blow torch of the gospel
The moral rod
Of the literary hell
Beating wheat to garner chaff
Thank them that there is
Still a drop of kindness in the world

The Steam Engine

I was riding the railway tracks of my fissures
Deep into my darkest inner thoughts
Lost and dying in the snowfall of my winter
And back again
From a mental anguish like a splinter
Never slowing down to quench my thirst
From a desire to be first

And so you appeared... Mr. Coalman
Power to you, Sir!
And so I take the shovel of coal
To start the steam engine and commence my travels
Darker than the pistons you feed
To master my trade
I see the white in your eyes
I smile at the glint exposed further down

And continue like a rollercoaster...
On through the tunnels
On through the loops and slides
The shovel never leading my hands
With sweat soaking my shirt
feet never leaving my boots
Stubbornness of such single mindedness

I want to extend my hand to say
“Thank you! Thank you for everything
For all the warm nights
And safe journeys thus far
Over undulating mountain sides and unstable bridges

Just as you feed my fire
On this scenic journey,
A life still on track with the passengers I chose to bring along
For the ride you steer in spite of my doubts and fears”

A Walk In Solitude

As I walk and linger the only baneful bringer banished from multitudes For the sky is gone no more descending dawn engulfed by my solitudes Much pain to bare a seductive scare as I stand on the lunatic latitudes Thoughts in a storm a schismatic swarm like the permeable prostitutes ~ Singing songs of silence in my compliance upon a habitable hellion hole Where demons dance with a piercing lance and I sleep on a bed of coal Damnation to dreams only silent screams like a cadaverous caving troll Where time never ends only bestially bends as a sepulchral for the soul ~ I continue to walk with a tapering talk following cryptic circles of mind In a darkened nest I devour and digest sinking silhouettes a bitter bind For in the company of shadows a wilted rose ransomed is left confined Melting memories weep in solitudes we sleep of ambient anguish blind. ...originally posted August 1st, 2018 For Your Poetry Journal Sponsored by: Dear Heart a.k.a. I See America

I SEE AMERICA
I see tall green majestic trees, and fields with warm and fertile soil
I see strong hands grasping simple tools in sincere and honest toil
I see purple mountains majestic peaks, and rolling capping waves
I see broad rivers flow, in valleys green, through golden sunlit haze
Oh Lord God I see America in her golden harvest days!

I see factories with spinning wheels and thundering broad cascades
I see tractors pulling mighty plows through clouds of dust they raise
I see white domed spires reaching high,
And the dusty black round coal miners eye
Oh God thank you for America, holding work and honor high!

I see children standing straight and tall, saluting grand old flag
I see men in arms, they gave it all, with not a one to brag
I see steam fitter, mechanic, electrician, farmer and engineer
And when you raise a flag amongst them, they all shed a tear
For the flag that they all love, and the friends they held so dear
Oh God I see America, standing righteous without fear!

I see many hands upon a shovel, many colors to the hands
I see America bend her back, to work and till her lands
I see the fish bite in the brook, on hot midsummers day
I see the children run and leap, and shout and jump and play
I see her people kneel in church, and then I hear them pray
Oh God we thank you for these blessings, of each and every day!

But, Oh Lord God what is it, that I see this cold new day,
I can’t believe we’d give this up , and simply walk away
From our nation as she once was, before we turned astray,
And lifted up the human mind to rule and lead our way!

Cat History In Eight Stanzas

Tom said to his kitten: Don't hunt! It's hard work!
Leave hunting to others and don't be a burk
Watch me and heed me and later admire
We'll slink to the future - a far distant fire

There sat some bald apes - one cooking some meat
Fur clad and thick bearded and great hairy feet
Tom stares at the bald apes - wide eyed and miaows
They throw him a meat scrap - the kit just says "wow"

Did I just see that? Blind luck or a trick?
Why did they feed you? They must be so thick?
Tom cat said just listen. I have a great plan
We'll domesticate bald apes to better catkind

We'll make them build wheat farms then store all the grain
To attract vermin rodents - our staple buffet
Breed bovine and ovine to fill up our bowl
Carved wood then ceramic then hand made with gold

From stone tools to bronze craft to iron we lead
The wheel and the ploughshare makes sure that we feed
Mud huts to brick houses to keep us bone dry
Wood fires, coal boilers - to cold say goodbye

We'll make them cat worship - a pyramid scheme
Then reinvent printing - cat posters supreme
Electrics and TVs and PCs - the net
Cat websites and movies on YouTube - no sweat

Then rockets and spacecraft to aim for the stars
But somewhere warm thank you - it's real cold on Mars
They might have big brains but what's better than clever
Is ruling the clever - forever and ever

And when we are settled in their mortgaged homes
With sofas and cushions and beds for our thrones
And though we are fed, we'll go back to our roots
And stare at them wide eyed - miaow to be cute

A Christmas Story Untold

As I read from PS It’s Poetry the children sat in wonder
While reading one persons poem I came across this untold story
This book written from long ago from around the globe
To late to enter into soups first anthology came this story untold

Sights of Coal Page 244

Twas on a cold night this one Christmas eve
When Santa and his eight tiny reindeer appeared
A clatter was heard upon the roof up above
With the children sleeping as snug as a warm glove

With toys floating and dancing in their minds
Dreaming of of toy’s and fun games of all kinds
Building a snowmen then sleighing on a new sled
A Ho, Ho, Ho was heard as they ran from their beds

The milk glass half full and bites out of the cookies
Small nibbles in the carrots under the tree filled with goodies
With eyes wide opened and blinking colored lights
Bows of gold with garnishing ornaments a wonderful sight

Yet one present not yet opened was a gift from amazon
One name was missing and yet my name did appear
A beautiful piece of poetry as my friends name had disappeared
With one name missing on page 244 I am adding it this year:

Alexis Y. A sweet Nectar of love this is our: Collaboration of love

Receiving a piece of coal yet her wonderful spirit did appear
Giving me all the credit She is the true spirit of Christmas Cheer
She gave me this gift without remorse a pure heart of gold
I thank you my friend for this gift of your kindness and love

Jenny Coal

I couldn't be much happier than the day you left me
I can go back to being miserable and lonely
It is much more enjoyable doing this by myself
No more stomach ulcers, you leaving me has improved my health
Since you've been gone, I've changed my point of view
It's all about me, it will never again be about you
With you I felt I was always on trial for some kind of crime
You had me sporting a ball and chain doing time
You were the Warden and I was on cell block 7
I was trapped in your hell, never seeing the light of heaven
Then a hurricane west wind swept in
It was a west wind named Jim
That day you told me to pack sand
I walked out to the car waiting for you and shook Jim's hand
I thank you Jim for freeing me at last
She will turn your world upside down and shatter all glass
I advise you to drop her off, don't let her slither in your life
She is worse than the Devil himself, don't make her your wife
Then one day, much later in the years
A knock on the door, it was Jim, you can tell he had too many beers
He ask to come in and says he can't stay long
He said he came home from work one day and made her gone
He looks at me with a smile from ear to ear
No more ulcers, migraines and no more tears
She left my life in shambles, but I am rid of her
From this day forward, I can start all over
I've already notified her next of kin
She got what she deserved in the end
She's in a million pieces, we got our wish
Scattered all over the Atlantic, feeding the fish
I tell him she as evil as they come, you will be visited by her ghost
I go to the kitchen and pull out a couple 24's and say let's have a toast
Let's drink to the woman who had no soul
No other man will ever have to experience Jenny Coal

Bobby Shafto 2022

Boby Shafto was just told to go
When made redundant from P&O.
He’s annoyed with the company’s gall
They only dismissed him by video call.
They just gave him hours too pack,
No appeal allowed, he’d got the sack,
But there’s nothing more he can do
They’ve been replaced by agency crew.

He had to sign on at the Dole
No jobs at steel or old King Coal.
Modern work’s changed that’s a fact
Now they have Zero hour contracts
And Politicians just don’t give a toss
As long as companies don’t make a loss.
Wasn’t it a Minister of State who said it
Subsidise slave wages with Tax Credit

He’s heard all about the hardship
Of trying to survive on basic PIP.
He thank the Lord he has no wife
As he starts his unemployed life.
He’s got redundancy cash to be fair
But maritime jobs are so very rare.
He remembers when the port was full
And a huge fishing fleet sailed from Hull.

He’s not used to being at home,
Used to having the world to roam.
Bobby’s glad he wasn’t born too late
To remember when Britain was Great.
Now we’re run by pimps and whores
Hiding their money in funds offshore,
An economy that limps and stalls
A pound that sharply rises and falls,

Not helped by that disastrous exit
Caused by a minority voting Brexit
They still wave their Union Jack
They think they’ve got the country back.
P&O continues and is thriving still.
After massive cuts to its wage bill,
Bobby Shafto’s still back on shore
No job for him at sea anymore.

The shipping company P & O dismissed a large number of staff, without prior notification or negotiation, by Zoom. They were given just hours to leave their ships. Replacement Asian crews were waiting on coaches to replace them. Their wages were well below the rate agreed for British seamen, saving the company millions.

BLACKIE

Me father was a collier, worked Harton off the coast
Though he rattled from the coal dust he was whiter than a ghost
But the one thing that reviled him in his God-forsaken post
Was the torment of the pit ponies who he'd love and trust the most.

Shetlands worked the low seams, Gallers the big pit
And they toiled in dust and danger in the darkness and the grit
Blinkered up between the limbers, heaving coal, tubs full of it
Were the brave young beasts of burden, all a-frothing at the bit.

And Blackie was a strong 'un, he'd been down since '34
But he earned the lads good bonus so they worked him more and more
Till the weight buckled his legs and he stumbled to the floor
And he just laid there a-panting, all a-choking in his craw.

Ah me Da would bring them sugar and share with them his bait,
Now his mind was torn with fury and his heart was filled with hate
So raging black with anger he made the butchers wait
And he vowed he'd take the pony back up with him in the crate

Then Da's no longer digging, they locked him up you see,
For misappropriating mineowners property,
But you cannot cage a conscience, he'd set the brave one free,
From the bittered, blackened hellhole that had been his slavery..

Now Blackie's in the meadow with horses by his side
When the miners bring their children down he takes them for a ride
And he passes by the pithead and the place he nearly died
And he brays a silent prayer for the others still inside
For the broken, bloodied ponies and the tears yet to be cried

There's torment in them ponies down the mine, Hear me well, lad
There's torment in them ponies down the mine, Hear me well, lad
There's torment in them ponies down the mine.

HEAR ME SING THIS IN CONCERT ON YOUTUBE: 'Louis Spence.Ballard of Blackie'

THANK YOU.

Letter To Mummy

Remember, mummy…

Remember that I am a gift from God, the richest of all blessings;
Do not attempt to mould me in your image, or my dad’s, siblings, friends or neighbours;
I am an individual and should be permitted to be myself.

Remember not to crush my spirit when I fail;
Don’t compare me with others who outshine me.

Remember to discipline me with firmness and reason;
Do not let your anger throw you off balance;
If I know you’re fair, you’ll not lose my respect or my love.

Remember that each child needs two parents;
When you side with me against dad,
I’ll have feelings of guilt, confusion and insecurity.

Remember not to hand me everything my little heart desires;
Otherwise, I will never know the thrill of earning or the joy of saving.

Remember not to make threats in anger,
Or impossible promises when you’re in a generous mood;
To me, your word means everything;
When I cannot believe in you or dad, I’ll have difficulty believing in anything.

Remember that there is dignity in labour;
Whether performed with callous hands that shoved coal,
Or with skilled fingers that manipulate surgical instruments.
Let me know that a useful life is a blessed one,
And that a life of ease and pleasure-seeking is empty and meaningless.

Remember not to try to protect me from every small blow and little disappointments;
Adversity strengthens character and makes us compassionate;
Trouble is the great equalizer, let me learn it.

Remember to teach me to love GOD and fellowmen;
And, mum, please, don’t send me to church/mosque or fellowship,
Take me there!

Thank you mum for reading my letter through.
I am sure you know I love and appreciate you.
But, in case, some of the words sting,
And, you’re now not sure of my heart,
I love you, mum, I really do!

From your child…
