A Pink Rose

My best friend and I
Ran barefoot through the garden
Stirring the petals
Her hair tied back in two braids
Her skirt trailed out behind her

We sat by the stream
With our feet in the water
Talking and laughing
Until a pink rose I plucked
And wove it into her dark braids

Sweet Raspberry Kisses

Baby, when you’re grown
cradling your own darling babe.
Remember your days
of sweet raspberry kisses,
rhymes and twinkling lullabies.

I will remember
the sweet sound of your babble
through bubbling laughter,
your pudgy, little fingers
and wide-eyed wonder, always.

Wonder of Stockings

Stockings hung early Part of the Christmas décor Mesmerized, I’d sit Santa, please, no nuts and fruit Oranges take so much space Eyes wide with wonder Always some speculation Stocking touched each day Empty until Christmas morn Suspense was overwhelming Perhaps a yo-yo Homemade goodies from Ma Clause Treats tasty and sweet Maybe a harmonica So Dad could give me lessons One more thing, Santa, Jingle your bells; wake me up So I can serve you Milk and cookies I helped bake And see if my horse arrived
*Every year I asked for a horse, but apparently they don’t fare well in cities. Santa never responded to that request. LOL Written November 5, 2011, by Carolyn Devonshire for Russell’s “Christmas Stocking Tribute” contest

OCTOBER FOR KIDS (haiku and tanka)

Two Ps in PumPkin
Two BIG Os in OctOber
and apples galore

One October night
Along about All Saint's Day
I heard Satan laugh
T'was in a rural graveyard.......
Or.....was it the old Bijou?

October pig roast
Girls squeal and the fire pit POPS!
Boys have a leaf fight
While Mrs. and I keep warm
After dark the ghosts will come

October hayrack
A friendly kiss in the straw
Horses country road

Autumn mystery
GIANT PUMPKINS come to life
They live at our house

The pool covered o'er
No swimming in October
Beneath the canvas
Crawls the Amityville horror
Or so big brother tells me

The Cheeky Boy

The cute cheeky boy
Has a hot magnetic smile
Yet he answers back rudely

Cute as an apple
His face displays innocence
His talks, childish and honest

And makes me see Paradise

With brown squirrel eyes
As sharp as the razor's blade
He gives us reasons to live

The Little Vampires

The little vampires Are dressed in their very best Drinking red grape juice Acting like it was some blood The little rambunctious ones They toss it away Acting like the blood escaped No matter the mess You must understand their view The fun Halloween brings them Excitement with glee Their hearts beat with candy corn They think the world’s great Full of the evil monsters All crawling within their lives So let the vampires Play like they do love to play With their red grape juice And the mess it sure creates For they’ll always remember… The fun you let them have tonight!
