Spring Showers

The Happy Field and Spring Shower Hand in hand, we fluttered like two butterflies among the fragrant flowers of the field and meandered, singing songs, along a stream. No agendas to keep to; no schedules to curtail the pure pleasure that we took in consuming every lovely hour of our Saturday. With our picnic lunch, we sat down on a blanket. Later we lay looking up at clouds. Transported to the wonderland of our imagination, we named them fluffy mountain ranges, bunnies, sheep, and Easter lily petals until they morphed into lopsided bearded faces, huge white polar bears and cotton-breathing dragons. Unexpectedly, the clouds grew dark, and suddenly, we saw and felt large raindrops splatter on our skin. We fled our happy field, arriving home - two children, wet and laughing, just as the spring shower let up. How were we to know in the springtime of our lives that the field and the rain from which we fled I’d one day write about as metaphors for youth. Written for the Spring Showers contest 3/30/13

Color Me A Father

A child with a crayon can color an imaginary world,
With dolls of mommies, daddies, boys and girls,
Full of horses, cowboys, cars and trains,
Can scratch them out and draw them all again,
Color me a rainbow with a pot of gold,
Color me a fairy with ribbons and bows,
Paint my face, a bright yellow sun,
In a green grassy field where a blue river runs,
With mountains and trees set in a colorful scene,
Monkey bars, teeter-totters, an old tire swing,
Color my face with a bright happy smile,
In a wonderful world, if only for awhile,
I can pretend my life is happy and gay,
Not worry about the mean stuff, just for the day,
Not worry about what I will eat, or where I will sleep,
Or the cockroaches and rats that make me creep,
Color me a family with brothers and sisters,
Color me a man to call Daddy, not Mister,
Color my mom in a bright yellow dress,
Stretched in a hammock under a tree with a nest,
In the yard of the house, we can call our own,
With neighbors on each side of our lovely home,
Color my dreams carefree and wild,
Color my life always as a child,
Color me a father, color me a Dad,
Color me the life that I never had.
Color me a garden with fruits of all kinds,
Apples, pears with grapes on the vine,
Color me a crayon that’s really a crayon,
Not this old sharpened pencil that I just found,
To draw my picture on this brown paper bag,
That was once filled with gin and Ole’ Granddad,
Now, Dream me a dream…Once upon a time,
I had a real father that I can call mine!

Just a Woman

It’s been a long time
Since I’ve felt an angel’s touch
It’s been a long while
Since I’ve laughed this much
I’ve been burdened by my past
Afraid to let it go
To forgive the sins I know I’ve made
It took a long time to know
That I am just a woman
Who’s never had the chance
To spread my wings and fly away
To be happy when I dance
To appreciate the sunshine
That I have so much to give
I’m stronger than I thought I was
And I’m learning how to live
Time had just been passing
years have come and gone
Never taking any credit
For battles I had won
Now I treasure every moment
I’ve learned to take a bow
Living well is ageless
And time does allow
To be just a woman
Who’s not afraid to fall
Who recognizes courage
Who deserves to have it all
I’ve discovered my own passions
I’ve left the past behind
I can climb any mountain
Not afraid to find…that
I am just a woman
Who’s never had the chance
To spread my wings and fly away
To be happy when I dance
I appreciate the sunshine
I have so much to give
I’m stronger than I thought I was
I’m learning how to live.

My sister's Smile

My sister’s smile

Fourteen years ago, my sister founded something, something powerful, something she wore everyday, a smile. A smile that could defeat anything that was against her and make everyone around felt nothing but joy. My sister had a disease, there might not be another tomorrow for her but she did nothing but carpe diem; enjoy every single moment to the fullest. I can barely remember everything that passed during that time, I was just four years old but it is impossible for anyone to forget such a unique and beautiful smile. One day she had to do analysis, another day she needed to take about 10 medicines and the next day she was in chemo, this process repeated itself by several months and I was amazed because not a single day passed where she didn’t give a smile. Most of the days she had to go through intense and painful tests so she can get better and believe me they were extremely hard, but she had something that motivated her, a kind of award. She had a little book that was full of happy faces stickers of every single color, size and shape. She loved the shiny ones because it meant not only happiness; there was a little extra that made her feel so good. She wrote on a notebook her daily treatments and she leaved a little space so when her hard day was over, she can put the sticker on the blank space she left previously on the page. She filled about 240 pages with happy faces and every person that went to visit her read the whole notebook and left the place with a smiley face sticker on their forehead. It is a unique and simple daily motivation she had and it turned out that it worked really well for her. Many people find happiness with material things such as new clothes, accessories, cars, luxury things, and etc. They forget that the little and simple things have the most impact in their life. My sister’s happiness was represented by a simple smile and most of the persons that she knew and where present during that time had received that gift she founded one day. Through hard times and sad days don’t forget to smile because one single movement from your mouth can bring the most powerful feelings that can defeat almost everything that stands against you. Just like my sister, she founded her smile and it turned out that it worked really well for her.

Dementia

He was always so happy
strong and bold.
He'd give you the shirt off of his back.
Tough.
Independent.
He had a rough life
growing up through the depression,
but like he always does,
he got through it.
He has two boys, of whom he is so proud.
Moved from Regina, to Victoria.
He had the best life anyone his age could have wanted.
But ever since his wife died,
he has not been the same.
Sad
Lonely
Empty.
But like he has always done,
he got through it.
Mind slipping,
just a little forgetful.
That's how it always starts out...
But like always, he powered through it,
until now...
He is not the same person that I used to know.
He been sentenced to the prison in his own mind.
Possessed by the thoughts of his dogs ashes.
He likes to play the blame game,
but we know he doesn't remember that it was him.
He wakes up in the night
shaking with pain,
tears streaming down his face.
There is nothing we can do,
Oh well...
Two more tylenol.
Hold on to hope
for as long as you can,
It's only a matter of time now.
He gets vocal, a very loud tone.
He'll block you in your room
and make false accusations
But we know that it's the pain induced monster in him.
Tick tock, tick tock...
You can't handle the stress anymore
you have to leave.
Just hope for the best,
maybe it will get better.
Surprise, it doesn't.
Your denial is foolish, everyone knows
what happens next.
Sedation
Medication
Anger
Hurt
All results of
dementia

I Do Believe

"I Do Believe"

The purpose of LIFE is to {Living In Faith Ever}
to enrich God within us
to an optimum level
so that We as Humans
can be guided by God
to fuel out brothers and sisters
with the same driving force
to connect with the living God,
to His existence and
to See the Invisible,
Believe the Incredible, and
to Receive the Impossible
to our everlasting journey
to Heaven.

The Hypocritical Christian

I am the hypocritical Christian.
I say I follow Christ,
But I'm still consumed by my demons.
I go to church on Sunday,
But I refuse to invite someone back.
I want to serve on mission,
But I'm too afraid to act.
They think I read The Bible,
But I just fall asleep in it.
They think I'm positivity and smiles,
But underneath I'm death and addictions.
They think I'm clean and pure,
But I'm broken and mistaken.
I say I'm not worthy of His love,
But Jesus will never let me be forsaken.
I pray long prayers,
But inside they're empty repetition.
It might look as if my faith is strong,
But my core is too easily shaken.
I say the things I'm supposed to say,
But don't follow His actions or obey.
I speak the truth the church wants to hear,
But deep inside on matters I don't know what to believe.
I walk in shame as if I'm not good enough
To be loved by God and saved through Christ,
But there is nothing I could ever do to earn His peace;
It's a free gift.
I accept;
Now forgiven, changed, and released.
Thank You God,
Thank You Jesus,
Thank You Holy Spirit!
In Jesus' Holy Name,
We pray,
Amen!

EMBERS OF TIME

Twists and big turns in the name of real love
Either it will mend or break a heart
If this feeling of love, its author is God
Involved persons then must render their part

He logs more on oceans and she on land
Friendship to sweet soulful romance, began

No phone-lines nor e-mails nothing advance
With only black pen and paper on hand
Both of them, grab take that one lifetime chance
Thirty five years now, they are on love dance

Skin gone sag, wrinkled. Hair now thin and gray
Holding hands while walking like good old days
Romantic dinners. Roses. Gifts and cards.
Hugs, kisses... "I love you", their darling say

Ageless enduring in embers of time
Blazing better within embers of time.

Twigs

Twigs

Flowers bloom
And flowers wilt.
Flowers blush
And flowers fade.
The eternity is only in me-
The twig that bears the flowers.

Sparrows are born
And sparrows die.
Sparrows fly
And brighten the sky.
That who nurtures sparrows is me-
A cozy make of a twig upon a twig.

The sun fades
And moon is born.
The twilight blurs
And moonlight spreads.
All the soothing moonlight beams are me-
A crisscross of unfathomed twigs.

Whether in its birth
Or in its death;
In the heart
Of its heart;
The entire beauty is none but one-
A design of mysterious twigs.
