The Light Shall Overcome The Night

When you find yourself alone in the shadows
Void of peace and tricked by deceit,
Know that light flushes out the dark
And there's a light deep within your heart

If you find yourself in a crowd blind of clear sights,
Remove yourself from their company, and find some light

It will always be darkest before dawn
So prepare yourself a light
Because darkness will surely come

For shadow shrouds over everyone and everything,
Never are you alone when the night comes to cling

We all share the same sun and the same moon
But with life comes fire, let us use it to banish the present gloom

Together, when we all contribute to the fire
We can create warmth and huddle around the campfire
Until this present darkness expires

Some may be lost within the pitch black, and absent day
Some may even run wild in search of prey

But know this..
Within your heart can start a spark,
The smallest fire can give birth to soaring flames
So bright you might even forget the darkness even came

The light shall overcome the night, breaching through the skies
So hold fast to your light, whatever it may be
A candle, a torch, a lantern, or even the full moon shining across the seas

GOD never gives us more than we can handle
So hold strong to your BLAZING candles

CRICKET

**Example for my contest.**

THE CRICKET

chirp chirp!

Visions of my past why are they following me?

Leave me the h3!! Alone,

Let me be, the earth is my home.

I am not willing to fly free allowing my deception to roam free.

A passion I no longer see.

I find myself lying on this grass all alone.

Tears caused by my saddened past.

How can I hear the ocean waves, only trees surround me?

A life I cry why me?

I have no guide to show me how

I have been all alone before the age of one.

I have nothing to call my own.

What is that chirping sound?

Allowing me to live knowing my mother, did not care.

An embryo in her womb, safe in your care.

My mother's destruction pulled me out of a life that was not for me.

Where is my guide?

Crickets chirping soundly, how is that supposed to comfort me?

Do you not care for me? Why do you send the smallest insect to laugh at me?

Every time I fall to the ground, a chirping is the only sound.

I'm not ready to be rescued, I have not found my final stop.

Why is this insane insect in front of me?

Is that an annoying sound just for me?

What a silly way to show me who and what you can be!

Thinking of you in the biggest form.

An insect I can hardly see.
Why did it not come to me, on wings?

Do you mock all those times I fell onto the ground?

It was not the ocean waves I heard.

It was always the sounds of millions of crickets around me.

Showing me your power can come in any form, shape, and size.

Next time stings your way into my life like a bee.

Lord, I've Been Hurting

Lord., I've Been Hurting!

This one thing I am
 most certain…
Lately I’ve been really hurtin’.

I trying to do right, but it
turns out “wrong.”
Where, in life,
do I really belong?

So many people
 pass me by.
Sometimes, someone
may say; “hi!”

I don’t know if this message is
 getting across?
I feel so confused and
completely lost.

A message of “help” has my
 prayer and plea…
For God to reach out to me!

He reached down and
made me whole!
HIS love and compassion
 filled my soul!

Spending time with Jesus
 is time well spent!
It was for you and me that
Jesus was sent!

Do You Have Movies And Magazines That Don't Belong In Your Home

I visited a garage sale. And had a
surprised look on my face.
I noticed that some things
 were "out of place."

To my right... Was a shelf filled with books..
And Christian ones too.
To my left...  Was a sign that read;
"I have adult movies for you."

I wondered and thought with
some kind of amazement.
"Does this person read these books.
 And watch this "entertainment?"

This is common in many Christian homes...
Often... People cross God's
"boundaries" and "safety zones."

Anyone can go to church.
Pray, sing and "shed a tear."
Not realizing that sin's temptation
 is drawing ever so near.

Do you seek God's holiness and the
power of Jesus' name?
But each night... Before bedtime...
 Things aren't quite the same...

Have you opened up your heart
and mind... And live life unfulfilled?
Is this the way you ought to live?
Is this what God has willed?

He desires to live inside of you.
  And help you to discover.
With any stronghold in life. He'll help you to recover!

Are things in life "out of place?"
And need to be put back together?
Allow God's word to guide you!
His promises are forever!

Everything will be where it should be...
With Jesus In control!
Only he can defeat the enemy that
seeks to destroy your soul!

Lifelong Stories

You and I
Suicide
Never knowing what it means
To bleed
Never touching the dreams
You need
Just bleed

Thoughts glimpse inside
Glimpse inside the mind
They say you’re nothing
Hide your worth
They say you’re nothing
Dead from birth

We all want to be
Want to be
What they want us to be
We all wanna see
Wanna see the light
Open up your eyes
See inside the light
This is our story
Give God the glory

Down the medication
Take it all in
Put another line inside the wrist
Maybe it’ll block out the fist
What does this life even mean
What is a happy dream

We all want to be
Want to be
What they want us to be
We all wanna see
Wanna see the light
Open up your eyes
See inside the light
This is our story
Give God the glory

Lovers seem to fade
Fade into the grey
Families tear apart
Rip out your heart
No one seems to care
If you go no where
No one seems to cry
If you sleep at night

We all want to be
Want to be
What they want us to be
We all wanna see
Wanna see the light
Open up your eyes
See inside the light
This is our story
Give God the glory

Thoughts glimpse inside
Glimpse inside the mind
They say you’re nothing
Hide your worth
They say you’re nothing
Dead from birth

Just run
Run away
Death is not the end
Heaven send
There’s something greater
In the air
God we need you now
There must be more
More than this

 We all want to be
Want to be
What they want us to be
We all wanna see
Wanna see the light
Open up your eyes
See inside the light
This is our story
Give God the glory

Man's Corruption God's Redemption

Man's Corruption... God's Redemption!

The Bible speaks of man's sin and corruption.
That's why God has offered us, his redemption!

The heart is desperately wicked above all things.
There's an evil corruption that sin brings!

The Lord searches our heart and tests our ways.
He watches our lives, all of our days!

There's nothing good in ourselves.
Not now, or ever!
Without God's mercy...
We're doomed forever!

But, through Christ, there's a way and a plan!
He made this available to every woman and man!

His gift of salvation is a message of love, made clear!
The coming of Jesus Christ,
 draws ever so near!

We can trade our sinful corruption,
for a new way of living!
Won't you come before the Lord,
with a heart of giving?

Giving our life to Jesus,
is the best thing to do!
By his power and grace, you can be
made BRAND NEW!

I'm thankful for his salvation!
 Mercy has been applied!
Because of Christ' death on the cross…
I'm now sanctified!

Porn No More

I've watched the war from behind closed doors;
Eyes too glued to close.
And now knowing what's in store, there's porn no more.
God's love is the only hope we know.
We are forgiven because of the love that is Jesus.
We are saved because of the love that is Jesus.
We give our lives to the Father for we are His children and He loves us.
We are loved!
No matter what we've done, we are loved!
Confess and ask for forgiveness;
This is such a beautiful gift!
Thank You God!
Thank You Jesus!
You forgive me!
You save me!
You change me!
I am changed!
I am new!
I am renewed!
I am forgiven!
I am saved!
I am changed!
There's porn no more
For God's hope is in store!
There's porn no more
For God's love is the hope of the world!

Our Father

This is where my grief met Jeremiah's lamentations

OUR FATHER
As far as the east is from the west, that’s how far the Lord has removed our transgressions from us?
Why do I feel not far removed from my sins or the sins of others?
Suffocated by faults and indiscretions of human-ness that lacks discretion
Of fearlessness; the lack of intuition
Of childishness but a child born in the wrong time?
But God’s timing is always right?
Can you see this Lord?
Is heaven mastering this disaster only for our inferior minds to finally resurrect from the shambles?
And realise that You have been building us a new city all along.
I believe in the Author of fate so maybe that is where my hope springs from
Or from the crippling fear of the effects of reality
Disappointment
Shock
Is this how feeble we are as humans?
How our chromosomes, blood cells, alleles all created from dust can just wither away when one gust of wind comes before we can find shelter
How our intangible thoughts are invisible holograms that effect nothing
Our father who art in heaven should we lose faith while we are on earth because there is plenty in heaven?
Will we make it the pearly gates with our infirm humanly wrongs and all the cavities punctured in our teeth
And speak to the guardians in low tones of how we praised the Creator on earth forgetting to mention how our own faults in the sweetened land He placed us in; have led us to corroded incisors
We consume more sweetened sin than soured heaven.
I cannot stare at my reflection in the mirror because I feel like a ghost
And legend has it that once the undead return they leave no shadow
They simply exist among other human humans
Who put status updates on their whatsapps saying ‘be still and know that I am God?’
It is easy to be transfixed in the same position when the walls around you are not caving in
I feel I have been saying much without saying anything,
Because maybe this conversation should just be between me and Him
But I do not know what to say to Him
My human human-ness has failed me once again
So maybe He could just look into my laden heart, desperate thoughts and fearful mind
And decide where I can go from here
Where they can go from here
Where we can go from here...
For Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever and ever
Amen.

Home of the Slaves

Land of the free
Home of the slaves
The blood, sweat and tears of my ancestors resonate
Amongst the soil where they were slain
I’m hearing their struggle
I’m feeling their pain
I can’t imagine being forced to part from my family
All for massa’s gain
So I pay homage to those who promoted change

People like every slave who tried to escape
Nat Turner, Ms Carlotta, Harriet Tubman
And the safe houses who were in accord
And peg leg Joe with his song
Follow the drinking gourd.

People like, the disregarded - those thrown overboard
And who was dismissed and defamed
The ones who were stripped of their soul, their pride, their names

The list could go on
The full will never be told
So I pay homage to others who were bold
Like John Brown, The Freedom Riders, Sojourner Truth
Ida B Wells, Phyllis Wheatley, Maya Angelou,
Langston Hughes and Charles Drew

George Washington Carver, Ruby Bridges
Booker T Washington and Mary McCleod Bethune
Charles Houston, Ralph Bunche, Fredrick Douglass
WEB Dubois, Paul Robeson, Ralph Abernathy
Benjamin Banneker, Marcus Garvey and Crispus Attucks
Who’s death by the way
Symbolized the American lie
You cant declare the rights of all men
While the people of African decent rights get denied
But still we rise

Thanks to Dr Martin Luther King, Malcolm X,
The Black Panthers, the Buffalo Soldiers and Tuskegee Airmen
None who were showed any love
Yeah it’s an uphill battle,
But obviously greatness can be done.

We can rise above this stigma
That blacks are lazy and daunting
That our worth is null and void
And in essence minus nothing
And of all the names mentioned
And the greatness of their successes
No one has been able to erase the evil transgressions of a racist mind
And once you have experienced just a taste of it
It changes your perception of time
The oppression beats like the drum on the chariot
Of when it was finally time to escape to freedom
It's mine

A Single Leaf Out of A Tree

A single leaf,
Falls out of a tree above me.

As it twist and turn,
The wind blows it in my direction.

But why?

It symbolizes all my struggle and all my pain.

It tells me that they twist and turn,
But never remain.

It takes a sudden fall next to me.

But why?

It symbolizes the thought of being alone.

It tells me that someone is always by my side.

As I write,
The leaf flies away.

As if it had a huge success in it's encouragement.

Nature communicates with us in many ways.

Not with words,
But with a single leaf out of a tree.

These Walls I Built

Stuck in the prison of my own life,
I dodge behind these walls I built.
And inside is a demon covered in guilt
And shame so thick you can't see his eyes.
God, please help me to see
No matter what, You will always love and be with me.
Thank You Father for everything.
In Jesus' Name,
We pray.
Amen.

Death Of The Dream

Where do dreams go if they die?
You can't put em in your pocket
You can't plant em in the sky.
And if you hide em in your heart
Then with you they'll surely die.
Where do dreams go, can they die?
When life just happens
You've fallen again and now running blind.
An unwilling combatant a greying specter
An emotional conscientious objector.
A Phoenix rising
Icarus hoping to fly
Once you dreamed so big
You almost kissed the sky.
Now all that seems like a faded picture
Faith sabotaged by doubt
A deadly elixir.
Where do dreams go when they die?
Were they actually there
Or merely a lie?
Did you dream in color or only black and white?
Were you alive when you believed?
Did you just hang on to the seed?
Or by faith let it go
Out of your control
Yet willing to still believe
That faith will let it grow.
Where did your dream go?
Is it alive
Or like a mirage in a desert
Playing a trick on your eyes?
Will you surrender to the camouflage of life?
Much like darkness tries to hide the night.
A peace treaty with deception
Void of light.
Where do dreams go when they die?

I Know Of Someone Holding Unforgiveness

I Know of Someone Holding Unforgiveness! I know of someone holding unforgiveness! This has led to a life of much bitterness! Toward his brother, he’s held on to a grudge. From his viewpoint, he won’t even “budge.” No matter what God’s word has clearly spoken… He’s walked with a heart that’s been broken! His son prayed that God would speak to him! That he would forgive, so God could heal him! Forgiveness is a powerful thing to do! If you want God’s mercy to flow through you! We’re not called to “hold back,” the love God’s given! Through Christ shed blood… We’re all forgiven! May the love of Christ come and touch us! It’s no secret how much God really loves us! Please come Lord Jesus! And touch our soul! May we express your love, wherever we go! May God’s gentle love, be what always binds us! HIS words; “love one another,” do remind us! By Jim Pemberton

When Depression Wins

The struggle kills when
depression wins
I might as well give all up
again
I know God is stronger but I
can't see the end
This hurts and stings but we
will trust Him again

It will all be okay
May God bless you always!

Hypocrite

I am a hypocrite and look what I just did:
I fell into my darkest pit; now, again, and again.
I thought that I was strong enough to live the truths I said;
Now I realized I'm much too weak; a fool too ashamed to raise his head.
God, please save me, please forgive me, and please give me strength.
I love You.
I thank You.
I am forever changed.

the Rose

The Rose innocent white, soft pink, yellows
colors touch your soul vibrant red to amethyst

enhances beauty yet a thorn awaits to break skin
as life does piercing your heart with a thin pin.

My life has shed drops of blood through each petal
as if in return for the love and beauty you feel

hence pain underneath patiently waits the bloodletting ~

The rose symbolizes love yet vulnerable to hold
for when you open your heart it can be left bleeding

The best of surgeons can not beat your heart
It is the inner faith and God himself whom gives strength

whispers in your ear you shall live you will exist
your life meaningful as the water and sun to the rose

For I am your God your existence is not over yet .
You must Live ~You must Bloom

I Went to Church Last Sunday

I Went to Church Last Sunday… I went to church last Sunday, and heard a lesson… I felt like I was almost in a “delicatessen.” A “menu” was served, with a “meal” given. And a “pep talk’” on “how good we’re livin’! We were asked to shake a hand, “and meet a friend.” “But don’t say anything that may offend!” Our comfort was sought after, with “love” in mind! We were taught to be “considerate and kind!” We sang a few songs, and raised a few hands… And got up and down, all through the stands! A pastor spoke a message, he wanted to be taught. A “feel good” message is what he sought! How many “feel good” messages do we need? In what direction does this church want to lead? Is it one that doesn’t have a fear of God, from within? Is this a place where one can find freedom from sin??? We need more than a Sunday lesson, to change this nation! We need God’s power! With Holy Ghost conviction! We need pastors that are on fire, with a passion and zeal! And the believe that Christ’ coming is very real! May there be a new focus, of Christ’ death on the cross! And much more emphasis on reaching the lost! Going to church On Sunday, doesn’t mean a thing… If living 100 percent for Jesus, doesn’t mean anything! May your church on Sunday be stirred from above! And be filled with God’s power, his holiness and love!!! By Jim Pemberton

Let's Praise the Lord

Let’s praise the Lord!
All you people of the land!
Let’s praise him with every
Instrument we have on hand!

Let’s shout praises to his
wonderful name!
A message of rejoicing,
we need to proclaim!

Let’s come before him,
with love from our hearts!
This is where a victorious
life really starts!

Let’s bring him our thanks
and appreciation!
And sing of his tender mercy
and wondrous salvation!

Let’s bring him a heart filled
With hope and cheer!
The coming of the lord,
is so very near!

We bless the father, the spirit
and son!
Through the blood of Jesus,
we have overcome!

Am I Still Forgiven

I did it again; I need forgiven.
Will He still forgive me even though I've fallen before?
I've fallen into these same sins countless times before;
I still haven't learned my lesson.
I am an ignorant hypocrite.
Am I still forgiven?

In My Community

Our Ancestors fought to the death,
Just so we can live a brighter day,
So before you light up that blunt of meth,
Think about what you’re giving away,
It was a glad day in history when Obama rose to victory,
The first black president was all we knew,
Dark skin is in!
Haven’t you heard?
That even in our community,
You can get burned,
It’s a sad day when people would rather stay home and “Crank That Amber Cole”,
Than get up and run to a poll,
In our community,
Rockin’ Luis V is better than having a college degree,
And teen pregnancy is not only a trend,
But the single motherhood that follows should end,
Young girls learn of a wonderful prince to take them away,
Nothing should change thought their mothers prince didn’t stay,
And as the tears fade away,
She grows stronger every day,
In our community,
Fighting is no longer a word,
You argue with someone and shots are heard,
Girls showing places the sun don’t show,
So how do they expect the community to grow?
Where love is a figment of imagination,
Making a young child question her creation,
Young mothers would rather buy the iPhone 5,
Then satisfy her baby’s cries,
While her new man’s eye,
Wander up another girl’s thighs,
In our community,
Where #team dark skin vs #team light skin,
Makes others not love the skin they’re in,
Love, lust, hate, and trust,
Giving a rose on Valentine’s Day is no longer a must,
Where bad is good and good is bad,
Who would think to see their grandmother sad?
Her hurt and pain,
Shows how our community has lost everything her parents fought to gain.

Dialogue of Souls

Best of friends, for countless years,
we had the best of times.
Now as my eyes are filled with tears,
your soul to Heaven climbs.
The path we take, not always clear,
I feel so lost without you here.
Your last words, prophetic now,
“I’ll be home soon”- you knew somehow.
You left me here, I’m so alone,
but I dreamed Heaven had a phone.
We talked all night, you fell asleep,
I held the line to hear you breathe…

Cain's Self Denial 2015

  Cain's Self Denial 2015

4 a m again alone,
In a room full of peers
A raging war is being fought,
Confined between your ears
Drafted into battle, with no enemy to engage
Yet volunteering unwillingly fueling dueling rage
Mystic river flows, with the blood of innocent
No longer even knowing, or caring how truth was bent
Angry at nobody, and everyone in between
Sabotaging yourself, and unraveling every seam.
Imaginary enemies
Whose roles change day to day
A game with no clear rules
Consciously unconsciousness, I know that I must pay
What promise can be spoken, to bring life into the void, uttered self denial, to speak within the ploy
And the enemy I can't see, nor begun to understand
Callously reflects my cards and always tips my hand
The price you pay for breaking souls, just keeps on feeling cheaper
You soothe your conscience with the ancient line that your not your brother's keeper
There's no bad and there's no good, you played the only hand you could
.
And the hollow eyes around you, pretend they couldn't see
You shake your head and try your best to pretend you don't believe
Yet you know too well the horror. . . Of what you've come to be

When My Depression Runs High

The sunshine is shining outside
And I'm stuck inside
I don't have any feelings anymore
Yet everything I am trying to hide
Pain comes in different forms
This type of me hurts the worst
I break when my depression runs high
That's when I'm cursed.
God, please help me.

God Is Good All the Time

God Is Good! All the Time! God is good! All of the time! I'm so thankful, he's a friend of mine! His goodness reaches beyond the stars! He's always here! Never too far! His goodness reaches, beyond our understanding! And gives life freely! And it's everlasting! His goodness brings comfort, Peace, and hope! And helps me down, life's "slippery slopes!" Please, dear God, May your goodness flow! And bring much needed strength to my soul! Your goodness always strengthens my spirit! Help me to be willing, to freely share it! By Jim Pemberton

The Joy Of Being Real

I know I should be happy;
There is joy in the Lord.
Yes, absolutely, there is!
In all moments,
In all times,
There is joy in the Lord!
Even in this moment,
There is joy underneath
The outside cover of depression and sadness.
That's what it may look,
That's what it may appear,
That's what it might feel,
But that's just me being real;
Opening up,
Taking off this cover
That I've been covering up with for too long.
This is me being real
And that's a part if joy;
The joy of being real,
The joy that is Jesus Christ!
May God bless you always!
Amen.

Run To The Light

Every now and then a day comes when I just can't find the light
And I feel so dead inside
But I just can't run
.
I want to believe
But I don't know what's left in me,
Lord I just can't run
.
So with all my might
And with what strength is left inside, I run to the Light
I run to the Light
.
And my bones are frozen cold
There's no life left in my soul
But I can't run away because I've no where else to go
.
Here I sit alone and crying
Afraid to live yet afraid of dying
Can I trust in someone that I can't see,
And I want to believe
Can You help me please?
There's no place that You can't find me
No place on earth that You are blind
To this darkness in my soul that I try to hide
.
So with all my might
And with what strength is left inside, I run to the Light
I run to the Light
.
Then I come to still waters where You have always been
And in spite of all my sin You still call me friend.
You wash my soul with peace
And my fears they melt away and I believe . . .
That's good enough for me to face the brand new day
.
So with all my might
And with what strength is left inside, I run to the Light
I run to the Light

I'm Not the Kind of Person God Wants Me to Be

I’m not the kind of person I need to be! There’s too many problems inside of me! I’m not the kind of person you’d want to know… I’ve too many worries and a troubled soul! I’m the kind of person who has a lot of stress! Lately, my life has been one big mess! I’m the kind of person who doesn’t have a friend. You listen to me now… But may never see me again! I’m the kind of person who’s gone through pain! I wake up some days, and don’t even know my name! I may not be the kind of person you’d want to be around. I may get discouraged, and “get you down.” I’m the kind of person who’s giving Jesus a chance… I know he loves me! Whatever the circumstance! I’m the kind of person who needs a lot of prayer! I know that God listens! And is always there! Please help me Jesus! That I may be set free! May it be your love that others will see! Thank you Jesus! For being my savior and friend! You’re someone that this person can always depend! I’m not the kind of person that Jesus wants me to be! That’s why I need more of HIM! And LESS of me! By Jim Pemberton

Depression and ME

LEAVE ME ALONE!
Oh what?
Are you too weak to handle
The little games I like to play?
GET OUT OF MY HEAD YOU DEMON
BEFORE YOU TAKE ME AWAY!
Two can play this contest
I don't like to be alone
STOP MOCKING ME YOU TRAITOR
GOD IS STRONGER YOU KNOW!
Then why doesn't He take your pain away?
IT'S JUST A TEST YOU SEE
FOR WITH HIM I AM INFINITELY STRONGER
THAN WITH YOU I COULD EVER BE!

Unknown

Who am I?
Am I defined by what is near in sight?
Am I defined by what I have done,
Or am I defined by what I could become?

Perhaps I'm of no use.
To him, or her, or I, nor you.
Or perhaps I'm too misunderstood to be defined,
And it is something like understanding that comes in time.

And if to the world I'm never shown,
Yet in my own light I've grown and grown,
And so I can know no happiness but my own--
The reason for my smile, to you, will forever be unknown.

I do not pray for the world to know my name.
For it and verse; the letters are the same.
And if a man should find his sorrow in what he reads,
I pray his pain my words to keep.

Should his eyes rain on my page,
Better tears than storms of rage.
And if a man should find his sorrow in what he reads.
I pray his pain my words to keep.

And if to the world you're never shown,
Yet in your own light you've grown and grown,
And so you know no happiness but your own.
Let the reason for your smile, to you, only be known.
