Frosted Panes - re-post

When winter paints those frosty ferns on my windowpane
I find myself a little girl up on your lap again
In that old house, where you wove that coloured tapestry
With all the glorious memories of your life upon the sea

With weathered palm so deeply etched with every season past
You rubbed a porthole in the center of the frosted glass
Where outside in splendour lie a winter-wonderland
As halos rose above your head from a pipe bowl in your hand

And there upon a rocking chair as smoke rings filled the air
We rocked across a sea of dreams wind tangled in our hair
To lands I’d never been before we stepped upon those shores
And through your eyes I saw each one and still I wanted more

The morning passed in dreams between two pairs of eyes of green
As the world outside held its breath in a sea of snowy cream
And when the chill of winter melted from the windowpane
The whistling kettle on the stove brought us home again

You held my hand and looked at me with that twinkle in your eyes
And told me you would be my Captain 'til the day I died
So when winter paints those frosty ferns on my windowpane
I find myself a little girl up on your lap again

Authors Note:
When I was a child of three, I Went to live for a year with my Grandparents in Nova
Scotia. At that time my Grandfather was a retired Sea Captain of a Three Mast
Schooner. He had spent most of his life at sea, taking lumber and coal to New
Brunswick and various ports in the U.S. and in the winter months, would carry on to
pick-up and deliver cargo in the West Indies. Although my time with him was short,
the memories we shared have comforted me through-out the years.

A Christmas Snow

It is Christmas Eve, all preparations for the day are done,
My hand grabs the doorknob as I step out to take a stroll,
On this peaceful night the village is silent, and I see no one,
Walking under the warm glow of a decorated streetlight pole.

I stand and gaze at the windows of the house next door,
Where a tree glows with bubble lights and tinsel strands,
Three stockings holding wishes, await over the fire's roar,
A scene straight from a dream, so wonderful and grand.

Glancing upwards, as the clouds glide across the moon,
Silver stars are out mingling with the drifting snowflakes,
A sight to enjoy here and now, for morning will be here soon,
A beautiful Christmas memory, deep in my heart to take.

Only one car comes up the street, as I walk along our lane,
Just a friendly snowman is there to greet me with a hello,
I stop, adjust his top hat, and reposition his pipe and cane,
This cold-hearted man has made a child smile, I know.

My ears lead me to the street corner where carolers sing,
As those old familiar notes drift towards me on the air,
More sounds seem to awaken as the bells distantly ring,
I felt nothing but a warming glow as I was standing there.

The Dead Of Winter

Here under the cold winter sun,
Beneath the old, lifeless tree,
My winter mourning has begun,
When no one comes to visit me.

Left out here on the edge of town,
Underneath the gray and gloomy sky,
In a lonely cemetery, with not a soul around,
Where every lone wintertime, I cry.

As I lay here, frozen and numb,
Crystal snowflakes are falling down,
The dead of winter has finally come,
Like icy teardrops upon the ground.

The wind howls like a lonely, lost spirit,
Through grass overgrown this December,
And it still hurts me to hear it,
That nobody even came here to remember.

Icicles have formed on the iron gate,
And the days now become dark so soon,
Forever sealing in my forgotten fate,
My only friend is the bright, shining moon.

And so I'll just lie here all alone,
No one will come until the spring,
And while you are staying, warm at home,
No one has left me flowers or anything.

Frosted Panes

When winter paints those frosty ferns on my windowpane,
I find myself a little girl up on your lap again;
In that old house, there by the sea, where you wove that tapestry,
With all the glorious memories, of your life upon the sea.

With weathered palm, so deeply etched, with every season past,
You rubbed a porthole in the center, of the frosted glass,
Where outside, in splendour lie, a winter-wonderland,
As halos rose above your head, from a pipe bowl in your hand.

And there upon a rocking chair, as smoke rings filled the air,
We rocked across a sea of dreams, wind tangled in our hair;
To lands I’d never been before, we stepped upon those shores,
And through your eyes I saw each one, and still I wanted more.

The morning passed in dreams between two pairs of eyes of green,
As the world outside, held its breath, in a sea of snowy cream;
And when the chill of winter melted, from the windowpane,
The whistling kettle, on the stove, brought us home again.

You held my hand and looked at me, with that twinkle in your eyes,
And told me you would be my Captain, 'til the day I died.
So, when winter paints those frosty ferns, on my windowpane,
I find myself a little girl, up on your lap again.

October Brings No Rest For These

Emerald etchings are given birth
to bask their lives in summer's sun,
until brushing brutal winters cheek,
They cower yellow; brown undone.
Swirling down onto concrete pyres,
They somersault to a random grave.
The earth lays claim to copper corpses
But the winter wind is a cunning knave.
It finds and flips the fallen fibers,
then flings them crisply to the street.
The failing sheaves of burnt magenta,
tossed like chaff from harvest wheat.
Now strewn about with playful malice,
and denied the resting place they crave,
for the golden sun is a glint of amber,
but the winter wind is a chilling knave.

A Kiss Under the Mistletoe

You saw me from across the room
beside an open door.
Your smile erased all of my gloom
and touched me to the core.

The mistletoe tied in a bow,
your kiss that caused my cheeks to glow!
The mistletoe, the mistletoe,
sweet start of something soon to grow. . .

Then on a most romantic ride
as we sat hand in hand,
you asked me if I'd be your bride
in Winter's Wonderland.

The one-horse sleigh took us away
where snow swirled down, then gleaming lay.
The one-horse sleigh, the one-horse sleigh!
My fondest dream took hold that day.

We snuggle by a crackling fire
here at the winter's end.
No other lover could inspire
me more than my best friend.

The warm fireplace, your angel face
which softly now my fingers trace!
The warm fireplace, the warm fireplace
shows love aglow as we embrace.

*This is actually called a Trijan Refrain, but it's very similar to quatrains.

Blackberry Winter

Down where the blackberries now bloom
      Blackberry winter is near
Jack Frost comes tonight maybe doom
With you here there's no fear

'Oar's frost might kill the early plants
       But in dreams they returned
Strong and better for fall's harvest
       Orange pumpkins weren't doomed

Blackberry winter has entered
       My life left me barren
Devoid of warmth feeling much strifed
       Need again warmth of grandchildren

Holding little one close_ touch softness
       Strange how one misses small
Things like tenderness, acceptableness
        A kiss that comforts squall

Blackberry winter here to stay
        Or miracle will come
For a miracle steadily pray
        Baby on knee awesome

Winter Pleasures

The trees are bare, now comes cold air

The breezes howl this night

I’m toasty warm, secured by charm

As we hold each other tight

This winter evening…

As the sun descends…

The moon is smiling…

No love pretends…

It’s all for real, dear…

As we stay inside…

The winter frowns…

While in here, we hide…

Our winter pleasures…

Are year round dreams…

When come the fires…

With snow filled scenes…

We’ll feel the softness…

As our hands embrace…

Reflecting fires, bright…

With red cheeked face…

Winter winds chasing, while love’s erasing

The many sounds we hear

We’re holding so tight, by the fire this night

As our bodies stay so near

Old mister winter…

Turn away from our door…

For we won’t answer…

We won’t give you more…

The room is ignited…

By this fire inside…

On this winter evening…

In here, we’ll hide…

A Walk in the Snow

Far from the town and its bustling throng knowing just where to go, Sister and I are walking along a pathway in the snow. Down by the lake and over a fence are hungry ducks and geese. To their clamor we give audience, watching their flock increase. Off comes my muff, for I have brought what they love to be fed. I hold out my hand then as I squat to toss them crumbs of bread. Those ducklings and geese can’t get enough, but new snow fills the sky. My frozen hand goes back in my muff, for no more crumbs have I! First Snowfall

Snow falls softly late one night In the darkness it does bask I dread the job tomorrow Shoveling will be my task Beauty is in the eyes of the viewer I see nothing but giant flakes of work The trees all have snow on this first shower Dreading the day of a job using torque The pathways are snowed over All with a reflective white I want to get to bed soon For I know tomorrow’s plight I’m mesmerized by the beautiful scene Not a thing is without some wondrous snow Even though I sure do dread the next day I will put on a great, wonderful show This time of year affects me Seems to rub off some great cheer I will find a way to smile Though there’s snow up to my rear

Memories On Branches

An old board and a rope had made me a swing,
Sitting there when I was around the age of nine,
I curiously looked up to see the first sign of spring,
Where a robin was building a nest of twigs entwined.

Summer's heat burned my shoulders, so I sought shade,
I climbed up into your strong arms at the age of fourteen,
Along with a book, I relaxed in a solitude no one could invade,
I found myself lost within the pages and the leaves of green.

On a lazy, autumn afternoon, at the age of twenty-three,
I raked the dead leaves that buried my feet into a pile,
Through the orange limbs my black cat peered down at me,
Then leapt from the tree to play among the leaves for awhile.

Now, as I am rapidly approaching the age of thirty-one,
Branches are encased in ice, as winter continues to unfold,
From my window, I see the cardinals and the disappearing sun,
Reminding me that life still survives in the bitter cold.

Pretty are the snowflakes
As I watch them fall
Covering up the landscape
Pretty scene for all

I like to watch the snowflakes
They put on quite a show
As they flit and scatter
Everywhere they go

So many are the snowflakes
Falling down on me
I wouldn’t now start counting
A daunting task that be

Cold are the snowflakes
As too is the air
Hat, coat, and gloves now
A must for me to wear

White now are the snowflakes
Covering the ground
Careful not to slip now
Ice too is all around.

Streetlights on the snowflakes
Make for a pleasing glow
I watch now out my window
At still falling snow.

Gracefully she accepts the scepter from the season past
Winter turns her head and with a steady, unhurried pace
Covers the earth with diamonds and her velvet gown
Then happily decorates the barren trees with ivory lace

In her heart she knows her reign will be a measured thing
In time the scepter will pass again and the bough will green
But now she rules while the land rests and gathers strength
Her time, a biding time, in its vast quietude a sleep serene

That Christmas Eve

On that Christmas eve I walked out alone
Passing sleeping fields glistening with snow
A lovely pristine carpet unmarked by man
In the midnight sky a mystic moon aglow

Here the quiet was deep and full of nature's joy
No man made sound , only the night bird's call
The scent of evergreen's on a gentle breeze
I walked until the snow began to gently fall

Reluctantly I turned my feet toward home
The city streets decked with garland and light
To face the madness of Christmas morning
But to recall this, and yes that other, silent night

Winter Woods

Winter wears
a warm white coat,
and wraps a scarf
around her throat.

She knits the trees
lacy white caps,
and carpets with snow,
growing things that nap.

Then in the morning,
when hungry creatures wake,
she fills their bowls
with frosted flakes.

Coldest Winter

The Weather People say it surely has been A couple of cold and snowy winter months I'm not at all pleased with this revelation Long for the days it was once Used to wonder if we'd have a green Christmas Well there sure was no question this year Would've been a miracle if it turned out green We had snowbanks up to our ears Lived in Canada since the day I was born Should be used to weather up here It's something we actually never get used to More than once I've frozen my ears Why me? Why wasn't I born down in Jamaica Walk around in shorts all day Dream on my friend, think of this Could've lived near Hudson's Bay © Jack Ellison 2014

Here Comes The Sun

It's been dull and dreary for months on end.
The chill of winter is lingering long,
Invading my bones and disturbing my mind.
How I wish this season would hurry along.

Waking this morning I glanced out my window,
Expecting more snow, more clouds, more gray.
But to my surprise and immense delight,
Golden sunlight is in full display!

Here comes the sun in all of its glory,
To warm up the earth and begin its rebirth.
The ice will soon melt and nature awaken,
With colorful flora sprouting up from the earth.

Here comes the sun, see it rise in the east,
Feel its warmth on your face at midday.
Winter's sojourn is coming to an end.
Hallelujah! Spring is on the way.

Time's Flight

Another year turns over, people look to see
just what the coming year will mean for you and me.
Tomorrow's worries aren't here, and yesterday's are passed.
Daylight's your new blessing, but it's really burning fast.

The seasons change so quickly, now that we're growing old.
"Seize the day my son", seems I was always told.
You cannot live life over, and you cannot take it back,
so make a first impression, be a leader of the pack.

We hurry every day, never noticing the minutes
flying by so quickly, time has no sense of limits.
Just talking all the while, we have such tales to tell.
If only every now and then we grab a rose to smell.

Take time for those you love, and those who love you, too.
For tomorrow some of them might not be here for you.
Teach your children honesty and show them some good deeds.
Because love will never flourish if we never plant the seeds.

Winter White

Winter White
I love the white of winter
As the snow lies on the trees
So clean and neat the landscape
But so cold the breeze.

Nothing’s ever perfect
I appreciate what’s best
It’s pretty when the snow falls
Don’t think about the rest.

I quickly grab my camera
To capture all I see
When come the snows of winter
I cannot let it be.

The white snow of winter
Covering all the ground
As far as I can see
That snow is all around.

I see patterns in the tire tracks
And ice upon the lake
What a pretty picture
All these things will make.

Children making snowballs
Throw them near and far
Looks like fun they’re having
Not at all bizarre.

Heavy coats they’re wearing
Just to keep them warm
Temperature is really down
After that big storm.

Yes, I love the white of winter
But can do without the cold.

The tree stood stark and lonely,
All naked in the cold.
Her branches bare, her lovely leaves,
The breath of Winter stole.

In spite of all she stood yet proud,
Her branches raised to Heaven,
A silent prayer in her heart,
For Winter's sleep to lessen,

The pain she felt amid the cold,
The biting wind so cruel,
And please let not some human come,
And use her wood for fuel.

Then the winter queen looked down,
On Tree with sympathy,
And gave to her a lovely gown,
Of snow in symmetry.

Now the tree stands all adorned,
In glowing winter grandeur,
And all who see her stand in awe,
Of Tree in Winter's splendor.

Thanks to Phyllis Babcock for her poem "TREE" which inspired this one.

Winter Be Gone

The green buds burst forth on the stem
Open gently breathe, as life returns again
Pressing forth, drinking the new days light
The sun returns from its winter flight

The leaves open and spread their charms
As a lover opens wide her arms
Taking the inquisitive honey bee
To pollinate and set fruit on the tree.

To watch it blossom, bloom and grow
Give thanks to God and let him know
Gratitude for his creation grand
The breath of life, the guiding hand

His words are written a guide to all
Help us live, lift us when we fall
From the start of his creation true
Give thanks to him that’s where it's due.

From Genesis through to Revelation
His scriptures a guide to his creation
The gospels tell of his loving son
Whose gave his life for everyone.

Spring returns to our hemisphere
Let’s give thanks to him that we are here.
As the days lengthen we all say ‘Come on’
Welcome to spring and winter be gone.

The wind comes blowing through the wood,
And Winter comes a-calling.
The trees give up their last few leaves,
The first snow flakes start falling.

The open, barren branches,
Now look stark against grey skies.
The rose bush too is naked, bare,
It's beauty sacrificed,

To the quiet and the chill,
As Winter now takes hold,
And on the surface Nature sleeps,
Through Winter's biting cold.

Floating snow flakes drifting down,
Make me pull up my hood,
As torch in hand I brave the depths,
Of snow drifts through the wood.

Just half an hour ago it seems,
The path was pristine, clear,
And now the snow has got so deep,
It reaches to my rear.

It will be good to get back home,
But just plain had to mail a letter,
To tell the folks back home about,
This fine Canadian weather.

Never saw snow before in my life until we immigrated to Canada when I was 27yrs old.
I love it and it's a true miracle of God; but it's cold and wet and it's more fun to watch from a warm room than to be outside in it. (Smile)

The omnipotent season? - Whenever it wants to !
Today October field was first-snow flaked.
First of a horde. This is not a peaceful coup
When autumn begins politely by contract.

Last week I saw leaves burning gold,
But their cold heat was an illusion,
No warm defence ‘gainst the winter cold.
Theirs was no flame of conflagration.

It was a mere seeming fire-moat
But cold fire, not burning - just the yellow
Of coward leaves turning coat
At the hint of the white army certain to follow.

For the sunshine has almost surrendered.
His morning face struggled over the low roof,
It hesitated all the short day and decided
to depart early, defeated - proof

That winter starts whenever it has a notion.
This first flake was a trumpet announcing
The immense white horde’s cold intention
Of riding roughshod and merciless over everything,

And stating that nothing will stop it.
Not seeming flames from leaf,
Not equinoctal dates. Nothing. You must submit
To the assault - and just hope for relief.

Mister Summer Man

Methinks I'll write about snow today It's a subject about which I've known Canadian by birth, so snow is no stranger As a kid many snowballs I've thrown But now that I'm old, damn snow's a pain Winter without snow would be grand Driving in snow, our lives are in jeopardy Perhaps a hospital visit unplanned Who was the first to say, “snow is beautiful” Snow has no redeeming factors Causes accidents and all kinds of bad stuff I'm the biggest damn snow detractor It has no good qualities that I can see You can't cook it, can't fry it, no use Just lies there causing a whole bunch of crap I've actually fallen on my caboose So the sooner it's spring the better I say And survive another winter season Not looking forward to the next three months I'm Mr. Summer Man, that's the reason © Jack Ellison 2013

Winter Holiday

Think of candy canes and the reindeer reins,
last year’s broken trains, miles of paper chains.
Questions that remain, still in Santa's sleigh.
These will explain - a winter holiday.

Latest giving trend, dress I had to mend.
Tummys that distend, the need to pretend.
Money that we spend, the best cabernet.
These will defend - a winter holiday.

Winter Storm

At last a chance to settle down
it's been a real long day ...
A cup of coffee by the fire
we're in the house to stay...

A cold north wind is blowing strong
it's nice and warm inside...
They say the snow will fall for days
we'll take it all in stride...

I've gathered all the wood we'll need
to keep us nice and warm...
We'll cuddle by the fire place
enjoy this winter storm...

The Winter Effect

As I ambled down the snow-white
I noticed the bitter winter on that
cold-riddled day.
I saw buildings enclosed by snow,
that partly shielded me from the

I feIt numbness on my fingers

I smelt the sweet scent of coffee
oh, how enticed my nostrils were
that morning!

I heard the sound of trees whistling,
and the haste of feet staggering.
As snow piled on the sidewalks like
heavenly glitter,
this reassured the presence of

Snowflakes Escape

            Snowflakes Escape

At the crack of dawn shots rang out
Ducks scattered at the sound
Obscenities quacked back from every beak
Hunters were not there for them

They came to capture fox
Snow fell with cartridges as hunters froze in thought
In perfect orchestration with the day and perfect aim
Focused on the games in nature

Bringing down their prey with rifles
Setting traps along the way
Men bundled in pillow white disguise
Running with their dogs and guns through narrow paths

Towering trees held green along the way
Held their ground below the mountain
Hunters settled
Looking for some warmth after the captures

Campfires blazed
Storms rolled in on bitter winds
Enter the calm
Large swirling flakes continued on the quiet

Each one avoiding warmth to hold their form
Away from creatures clad in natures white, like fox
Away from bundled men disguised in white
Snowflakes made their escape into the silence

Falling On Me Bum

There must be something besides love Another good topic for a poem Perhaps I'll write about nature and stuff And the chilly winds a-blowin' October in Canada has that nip in the air That foretells of the season ahead For those that are into those winter sports Bet you're can't get it out of your head Well maybe when I was a very young'un Snow time meant barrels of fun But this guy's quite old and crotchety now Snow means falling on me bum Can't wait for spring just six months to go The months can't go by fast enough Perhaps I'll hibernate just like the bears Then wake up and brush of the dust Don't get me wrong, I'm Canadian eh! This place called Talisker on the Isle of Skye
It just has to be visited to be seen by the naked eye
Situated on the West Coast, on one of Alba's isles
In any season one can only toast, taken in by smiles

For in the Spring it's surrounded by anew
Shoots reborn showing seasonal view
Lambs jumping, springing, on the various farms
With not a care in the world sharing their charms

Summer now abounds in blooms of various greens
Sparodic white houses stand out amongst the scenes
Birds in vocal song catching insects on the breeze
The sounds of children playing in fun filled please

Autumn slowly encroaches with the signs in the trees
Leaves in colour loss as the branches start to grieve
Carpets of many shades delight before their end
As we await the impending rains that natures due to send

There is now the chill of winter as all around starts to show
On the high ground her intentions, craggy peaks topped with snow
The day will soon be here, with her virginal carpet lay
Whether Spring, Summer or Autumn, even Winter has her say

Winter at Christmas

The streets were icy and slick Cars moved slowly on by There was a bustle of people A sparkle was in their eye Snow was on the ground, pretty Children threw snowballs around Each landing square on the girls Yelling as they hit the ground The adults were all shopping Looking for the gifts of the year Christmas would be here soon They shopped early as not to fear Windows were very much aglow Shining brightly within the snow Casting an orange glow about Giving everyone a good show The sidewalks were slick as well People had to walk with care They wanted to make it to their shops And to make it home, that being fair Nature has a way to bring winter Even if we move in the city Nature brings to us snow and ice We must deal with it, what a pity Christmas comes but once a year And we all go about our ways Christmas happens in winter Fills us with spirit all our days

Wanting Bodies Glow

In a world only they know from their first meet
She craves his manly touch and desires their souls to greet
Flesh from two in love in grace upon cotton white
Unification to be their want this coming winter nights

Caressed to undress whilst their kisses whisper so
Naked to bare in touch their wanting bodies glow
Excitement abounds in bloom, lips in tender grace
Eyes meet then close, their hands in loving pace

Like the rhythm of the ocean as the waves gracefully caress
Her laced light covered clothing, now to be undressed
Slowly her spine I traverse in kissing motioned flow
Upon her peachy flesh, she's sensed for in I grow

To her nape her lobes I touch, my hands adorn her mane
Whispers unto she I share, in delight I kiss her frame
Bite marks, clenched nails of thrill, adorn her peached skin
In blissful elegance, she now welcomes her Highlander in

In craving lustful desire, twined these two in mix
Their pulse begins to kick as they fuse transfixed
Fresh these two in love in grace upon cotton white
Unification to be their want this coming winter nights

To Warm Up Mankind's Behind

Okay people, enough is enough What's happening with this crazy weather Cold enough to freeze the tootsies off a penguin The eskimos are all huddled together So far this winter's been the coldest in years Certainly not a very happy camper Civilized people shouldn't have to live like this Us guys just love to be pampered In all my years, through each Canadian winter This one surely takes the cake Not at all pleased, just want you to know This is more than this guy can't take If I knew who to contact I'd pay big dollars For the sake of all mankind Beg them to moderate these winter temps To warm up mankind's behind <3 <3 <3 © Jack Ellison 2014

The big picture will show

I think of my writing putting thoughts to a page.
Lately they free me and release my soul from a cage.
I hope that all the changes can continue to be.
For it uproots my perspectives and the way I see.

I start to feel sorrow when I visit the past.
As I hope that these words won’t be the last.
Time flies by me, sometimes too fast.
I step from the shadows that yesterday casts.

Many times I feel my words are misunderstood.
I’d change them around if I thought I that I could.
I never meant any harm, I seek to do good.
The ground is shifting where I once stood.

The sun returned after days of rain
The sunlight erases all of my pain.
I dream of summer when the days were long.
But winter is upon me and the light is gone.

I seem to find strength and just move on.
I’m tired of hearing that same sad song.
I just try to put one foot before the other
Find a shelter where I can take cover.

The winter wind howls yet it’s warm inside.
Change does arrive with the coming tide.
The waves crash down removing the sand.
As time slip by, the time is at hand.

I don’t know the future or where this path leads,
I never get what I want yet find what I need.
I don’t know the answer but don’t have to know,
When it’s time for me to see the big picture will show.

I dream of spring

With winter upon me I start to dream of spring.
Though my senses feel numb I can’t feel anything.
I remember the sun its rays could warm the soul.
Though the cold of winter is still taking its toll.

I remember the scent of flowers clinging in the air.
Where once it was barren the grass shall grow there.
The trees begin to blossom as they come alive.
The beauty surrounds in every direction I drive.

I hear the bird singing they seem to rejoice.
The enjoyment of life seems to be the only choice.
They gather up twigs to construct a new nest.
They work until dark and then they do rest.

The days grow much longer I see so much light.
It seems like a beacon to guide me from night.
The sun grows strong and everything grows.
The warmth can be felt as a gentle breeze blows.

I feel my spirit grows I think I can fly.
I just spread my wings and take to the sky.
I look down to see all the world down below
The seeds that were planted are starting to grow.

I see spring much like a return of the senses
Nature agrees, it becomes a general consensus.
The dream seem so real I can taste it in the air.
Winter shall fade and spring senses shall fare.

                                      Your glow smiled winter night
                                  Emancipated me from coldness light
And in meadows warm spring quite
                                       Where became I so bright

Gone the winter of empty arms ,
Her fresh face is radiant with charms.

In the church garden fair,
One glorious May day near the ides -
Blossom on gown, hair,
Bosom and bouquet - the bride’s

Glowing in the warm embrace
Of her golden groom. She flowers
With bloom on her cheeks and  face;
Then, in light petalled showers,

Blossom -confetti litters and turns
To white the path through her roots unseen.
Then the hawthorn tree returns
Again to her everyday working green .

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

The hawthorn tree in bloom in May is a beautiful sight, but lasts only a short time, like
a wedding celebration. Hawthorn trees are known as May trees, and they appear in the
proverb “Cast ne’er a clout till May is out.” Many people think this means you must
keep wearing winter clothers till the end of the month of May, but it really means until
the May tree’s blossom-flowers are out.

(Here endeth the lesson.)

Surrender your soul to the seasons
give your heart to the spring
surrender your soul for so many reasons
flowers to come and some to bring

retreat from the seasons and let them rule
let winter roar like the lion it can be
everyone knows the winter can be cruel
but no one knows better than me

I surrender my soul each time theirs ice
and snow piles up except on the subway grating
i'm just standing on the corner trying to discern the price
watching for the man, watching and for too long waiting

surrender to the seasons your sacred soul
because the winter's too cold and the summer's too hot
now you have a brand new and illicit goal
since you surrendered to that very first shot

Balmy Or Frigid

It's moderating, yee haw it's warming a bit Finally it's getting above zero Just a while ago thought 5 was freezing Now it's balmy from a few days ago In comparison temps can feel warm or cold Depending on what we're accustomed to Fifty can feel downright damn balmy or frigid Really not much us guys can do Go with the flow, that's what I always say At fifty in the fall wear a coat At fifty in spring strip down to your underpants Coz fifty's balmy, no joke So there you have it, that's my take on things Humans are hard to comprehend Hard to try to figure us modern guys out It'll drive you around the bend <3 <3 <3 © Jack Ellison 2014

The Hut

A soft blowing breeze lifted her sun bleached hair
The sea crashes on the jagged rocks below her perch
Her eyes, the gray shade of a distant floating cloud
She turns on bare feet and cautiously moves away

A seagull sails in the updraft at the cliff’s edge
The small trail snakes upward to a winter meadow
Her mind wanders as she knowingly climbs the path
She pictures the smiling eyes of the Moon Goddess

A rebirth of the God will come with winter winds
The snowy grass baths her feet as she tops the cliff
Her hands brush high weeds as she returns to the hut
She enters by sliding behind a thick tanned hide

A fire burns within the comfortable warm home
The flames lick a clay caldron simmering sweet scents
Her hand lifting a burning stick at fire’s edge
She moves toward the small altar with lighted wand

A shell of ground incense and two candles are lighted
The cup of spring water and fresh herbs are offered
Her soft knees bend as she kneels before the altar
She calls the Goddess and God to her safe circle

Oh, Goddess and God
Please open my eyes
To the secret magic
Of Nature

I Hate Cold

Has to be damn hot for me to complain But just a little too cold and I’m in pain My age probably may plays a part, I know Didn’t bother me a long time ago It makes no difference what is the reason Can’t stand the cold of the winter season So when I retired we traveled around A warm winter place was finally found Arizona is home for half the year Lot of warm sunshine as most days are clear Back in Washington State it’s wet and cold Day after day of that really gets old We’re Snowbirds because we avoid the cold By going south before winter take hold We’ve been doing this now for fifteen years Still anxious to leave when departure nears

The seasons change

Not so long ago I stood in the sun.
Taking in the warmth and having some fun.
The days were long and the sky so blue,
The days were long yet I longed for you…

The days grow shorter the warmth is gone,
Leaves change colors winter won’t be long.
Frost glitters in the sun and melts away,
Things slowly fade that I wish could have stayed.

The wind gets colder the skies grow dark,
They rip through me sending a chill to my heart.
I look to the sky and see the birds fly away
Fall is gone and winter is on the way.

The sky opens up and the snow begins to fall.
It blankets the earth covering it all.
Still I remember what buried below,
I must wait until spring for it to show.

The sun grows stronger the winter ices melt.
As it touches my skin the warmth is felt.
Birds return singing as if to rejoice,
The rebirth of spring seems to be in their voice.

As years fly by so many seasons and change
As a new one comes, the last moves out of range.
The seasons become like stages in life
Some filled with beauty, others with strife.

Spring becomes like when you begin,
Summer is the times in the life that you win.
Autumn is like when you start to grow old.
Winter becomes tears frozen from cold.

I want hot chocolate kisses
On a cool summers' night
I want the butterfly effect
To satisfy my appetite

I want money for taking
with no strings attached
I want the best things in life
Not a lotto ticket to scratch

I want summer all the time
No winter cold or winter drear
I want to see the glass always full
watch the bottom disappear

I want so many things
I've lost in the past
Sometimes I want so much
I forget what I have

I want love unconditional
No drama or games
I want passionate nights
And for you to scream my name

I want what I can get
And sometimes that ain't much
But most of all, I want:
What I can't have...What I can't seem to touch!!!

Winter Warmth

A chill in the air, a blistery wind,
Sends resonating chills down my spine.
Oh, winters coming! I know it now.
Snow can’t be that far behind.

While preparing my wood, chopping away
I’ll swing and with each one, I’ll dream.
The cold winter air that comes to us now
Will heat up, or so it will seem.

Sprayed before the fireplace,
On a rug just made for two.
I see it all now, the image, the us,
Making our heat, just me and you.

But, back to where I am right now,
Preparing my wood, for to blaze.
I’ll continue to fantasize, all this time,
Of you, on all my winter days.

Answering Jonji

Walk on almond paths
of winter sprigs and thyme
floating upward under steps
you left for me in rhyme
I wish to counter balance
your magnitude and flow
with a whisper and an echo
like the winter winds which blow
Crisp inhale and wonder
with a cup of fresh brewed bliss
while the loose exhale of winter
turns my thoughts toward those I miss
You always memorize me
while you turn to me in kind
with a moment and a whisper
which you always leave in rhyme
I love you like forever
as you warm my hands in yours
as we wind on down our sensory paths
and land on different shores...
