- Haiku X 21 - Missed You -

                                  My bed is lonely
the glow of your naked body
                                  The winter breathes on me

The Sparrows Friend

The last leaf did fall,
winter clouds bring the first storm. Earth rest in slumber. Most birds have gone south. Cold winter winds staying now, sparrows search for food. Some have black and white crowns, some just two tone brown. They hide in the trees. Sun is bright, cold day, rest upon Earths frozen crust. The water is frozen. Birds seek human friends to feed and keep fresh water, with help they survive.

Haiku X 22 - Winter X 4

        1. White silver crystals
winter coat over a garden bench
                     Summer dreams

        2. Outside the window
                    the virgin untouched purity
                    the snow is here

                             ***

        3. Angels in the snow
                    White crystals flashes
                    The children excited

- Haiku X 19 - Ice King -

                                                The arctic steel blue
Frost smoke rising from the sea
                                           Wintertime.... Ice King rules

     - I hold many ice cubes in my hand, they melt slowly ..... my hands is numb,
        wet and cold.
     - There was a lot of mess ..... water everywhere ..
     - (All this just for you .....)

     - Picture reminds me that I need to enjoy every day of summer and autumn -
    - winter is blue, cold, icy, wet and looong.

Whence Springs Beauty

It’s October, we find time to go by the spring-house to get the tulips. It is time to prepare for winter and the inevitable coming of spring. The bulbs look hopelessly dead and ugly, rather pitiful in fact. John nurtures them tenderly.

fall gardener tucks the bulbs in bed till spring's alarm
Through many snows and chilling temperatures, we do not consider at all what is taking place under the ground. One warm March day we see tiny noses poking up through the soil around the back porch. By April, we are sitting in the swing admiring the result of John’s loving labor of last fall.
seeing the blooms we recall dried-up bulbs
How could such ugliness have turned to such beauty in the cold, hard earth? As May approaches bringing other flowers, our short-lived tulips drop their blossoms and say good-bye. But as John knows, the wisest of gardeners do not hasten to bother the beauty in its passing.
dust to dust all blossoms shrivel with time food for the soil wilting leaves nourish the bulb hidden in the ground
The bulb remains unattractive throughout the whole cycle of growth. Along in mid-July when all external signs of life have faded, John removes the unsightly bulbs from their bed, putting them back in the spring-house until fall. Without them, there will be no blossoms next spring. It is the care we show the bulb which bursts into the beauty we bless in time. HM

Harvest Moon -- Lughnasadh Haiku

**I wrote against traditional 5 -7-5 and twisted to 7-5-7 on these...can I do that?**

1.
Looking up in the sky at
A full harvest moon
Cool, aglow this autumn night

2.
Mists circle in, surrounding
Earth's last summer song
Warm nights are now memories

3.
The Hunter calls the Chosen
To this sacred grove
Children of seasons gather

4.
The leaves--brown and gold and red
Signify the end
Of summer's warmth and passion

5.
Souls are drawn within, waiting
Keeping close to home
Till winter's dying cycle

Haiku on a glacier at dawn: winter dreaming

Glacial blue dawn;
Slender pink whiskers of warmth
touch frozen ruins

Icebergs sailing by
scatter rubble in their wake;
Sharp winds cleave hard rock

Jagged shards melting
slowly in shallow sunbeams;
Chill pebble strewn pools

Icy continents;
Light glancing on still waters
mirrors frosted skies

Long days and short nights;
Winter rules this citadel
in crisp white mantle

DOGSLED IN THE SNOW STORM

DOG SLED IN THE SNOW STORM

                                           wind sucks breath
                                      hopeful frozen musher
                                              chases sun

                                                 frosty moon
                                          interrupts white fury
                                            dog team glides

Reynard Tracks

parallel tracks in fresh snow - a Reynard
Male foxes are known as dogs or Reynards, females as vixens, and young as kits, pups or cubs. A group of foxes is a "skulk", "leash", "troop" or "earth". Please see the About section for the photograph which had sparked a lively discussion what animal had made these tracks. It was stated that foxes leave tracks in a single file and the double line of tracks had thrown most people off the scent.... My contribution to the discussion: "Yes, it looks as if it might be the same animal, traveling in both directions - if you look at the slant of the indentations of the two tracks..."

WINTER COMES DOWN

Stealing down from the wooded high country
With its brown, red, white hills, and snow-hung tress,
Down from the crags in frosty grasses, and down from the rocky

Ridges and crowded lakes,
Down from those hungry coyote pups
The winter comes whistling and winding like eagles

Across this vast California land
And beauty as knife-edged blasts of leafs briefly
Kiss my face and beneath its blanketing hibernate cold

I just laughing and flattering with my dog
With such tangle of happiness!

Details | Haiku | |

The Gods are stirring

Last night, lightning spiked,
Turning night into brilliant day.

Last night, thunder crashed,
Like an avalanche rolling my way.

The rain, I thought, would come for sure,
It came to and end, with no downpour.

T'was just the Olympian Gods upon high,
Shaking the heavens, saying Winter is nigh.
