Notes About The Poem

Zigzag Man

Rain, nothing but rain
It’s raining so hard it sounds like
A round of applause
If only that were true
And I received such adulation
But I am an imposter
A poser
A man lost in the motions
Of life.
I sleep, to wake, to dress
In the morning
Put on my pants and walk to work
Passing the trenches were the blue
Collars are hunched over their work
I have a laptop
I am smart
I talk on my smartphone to no one
Just pretend to be making a big deal
That’s what’s important
One day I’ll get a bicycle
And then I can move fast
I’ll zigzag between the losers that are walking
I’ll have my Bluetooth device hooked up
And stuck in my ear
Like Buck Rogers in the not so distant past
Resume on line
Monster, Dice, all the big head hunters
They all want me
I get emails from Indians all over the world
“Six month contract owner desperate, need
network Guru.”
I am your man…well at least for three months
Then I’ll be on my way
But hey I got free airfare, meals, and a room
My closet is full of black clothes
I am your best friend
Can I bum a smoke?
I am a modern man
I own nothing and everything
See you at the office
Or maybe on the street
But you can be sure of one thing
I am fast on my feet.

Have you read Miniver Cheevy or Richard Corey by E.L. Robinson? There's a shade of sad familiarity in a lot of your poetry. Too much despair in the world. You are a talented and versatile poet yet always with a stream of futility running through. love, Kathy

Can't recall reading Richard Corey but Miniver Cheevy rings a bell. I appreciate your kind words. I do have a streak of futility. I am working on it :) Kilmer

Thanks Debbie, The modern world never stops. Sometimes I wonder when I see 20 people at a table and no one is talking. Heads down texting. Are we living in the present or 1000 miles away. Anyway thanks for taking the time to comment. I always look forward to hearing from my fellow poets. Kilmer

By the way, that is really cool that you did music live for 20 years? Did you sing? What instrument did you play? Your poetry is amazing. I can see the musicianship in your work. You are very honest, very wise. Love this. Always, Laura

Never was much of a singer. I played drums as my primary instrument then moved to guitar and mandolin. I have given up the drums and spend most of my time producing songs in my home studio. Glad you liked it. Kilmer

Twists, turns and zig zags made this daily redundance quite interesting. Fast on your feet will always get you to the next gig more quickly. This reminds me of John Lennon's Watching the Wheels.... "I'm just sitting here watching the wheels go round and round...No longer riding on the merry-go-round, I just had to let it go." I enjoy the contemplation in reading your work.

Love that song. Never even thought about it when I was writing. I wish I was in John Lennon's league! thanks Karen
