When you were you, and I was I And starlight spilled from midnight sky When sunlight flared and passion dared We bathed in love, THAT you and I When you were you, and I was I And truth was truth and not a lie When promise made was promise kept We lived the dream, THAT you and I ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ When you were true and love was new And passion blessed like morning dew When you professed your love would last Who knew your words would prove untrue ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ When you were you, and I was I And kisses notes of lullaby When love was deep and love was dear We sailed the clouds, THAT you and I When you were You, and I was I And romance brought a deep felt sigh When sweetest grace lit up your face We danced all night, THAT you and I ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ When you were true and love was new And passion blessed like morning dew When you professed your love would last Who knew your words would prove untrue ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* When you were you, and I was I Alas, Alas, do tell me why? The pleasure’s gone, remains the sigh THAT you has changed, and so must I Eileen

Hey....Hi, Richard. :)

I tend to expect the best from people and sometimes that can backfire. For the most part though I would say it has worked out pretty well.

I'm glad it has. I have high expectations...that always backfires. It goes with my personality type...Melancholy/sanguine. Melancholy people are perfectionists....and they except perfection in relationships. It's never that way....Thanks for the post. Hugs

Change creeps like the damp, and so many forget to take stock and look at what attracted themselves to each other when they met. We're all guilty, to one degree or another. Great write, Eileen, and a salutary warning to all. Viv x

It takes an investment of time and emotions. When the blush of excitement fades...those are the things that keep a relationship going. Few are willing to make that commitment. Thanks, Viv, for dropping by. I do appreciate it! :)

I think for the most part people tend to stay the same unless something drastic happens. Sometimes the person was never who we thought they were. I enjoyed the poem and the format Eileen. 7 all the way.

Hi, Richard. Glad to have you stop by. I think, perhaps, the second sentence of your post hits the nail on the head. It's sad...whatever way we look at it. Thanks for dropping by. Hope all is well.

The raw emotions within your words capture the heart with their strength of truth while devastating the soul with their sadness. Emile. #7

A sad truth that it happens. Wouldn't it a perfect world if people marry the greatest love of their lives and grow old with the same zeal and passion of a young love... Alas, many drift apart. Loved your rhyme, Eileen. 7, of course. hugs!

Thanks for the visit, Kim. A writer writes...the reader interprets. That is the beauty of poetry. Each takes what he/she wants. Hope all is well.

Sad but very, very beautiful poem my little Desert Orchid, reminds of some lines from an old song, 'If I were you and you were me, inside each others eyes, what would we see. If I was me and you were you, inside each others arms, what would we do'..... I hope that other hasn't changed. Take care, Richard

Hello, Richard. Thanks for sharing the lyrics of the song with me. I don't know this song you are referring to, but the lyrics are sweet. Well, when one changes, the other must change. What do you think about that, Mr Seal? Is Agony Auntie right? If someone where to write in to me and say, "The man I love no longer loves me. I love him and can't let go," what should my response be but...."Get on with your life, dear. There are other fish in the sea!" You got me in Agony Auntie mood, Mr Seal. Ok...I'll revert to Desert Orchid and thank you for your lovely visit. Hugs

Eileen, this is beautiful! Alas, people do change and once that happens there is no going back. Both the repeated lines and the refrain are effective. This would be the basis for a lovely ballad. Hugs // paul
