Transition - For Adult Contest

The day I truly became an adult – oh I remember it like it was yesterday The moment I gave birth to you my son – my life changed forever Nothing can prepare you for the responsibly of having a child Children are helpless, vulnerable and totally dependent on us Decisions I made then shaped you into the person you are today Yes, I made mistakes – I am the first to admit it But parenthood is a steep learning curve for us all I tried my best to nurture and guide you - as my parents had with me Hoping that you wouldn't make the same mistakes I have done Let you make errors and do things for yourself – it’s the way we grow Now you have spread your wings and have flown the nest When times get tough I wish I could revert Step back in time to the halcyon days of my childhood But the transition has occurred - I am no longer a child 04~22~15 Contest:- F J Thomas The true meaning of being an adult

I didn't place in the contest but I was fully aware in the contest that it probably wouldn't place - I originally didn't submit the poem for the contest as I did not consider it was what FJ was looking for - I am glad I have had such lovely feedback:-) Hugs Jan xx

You betcha. Trouble is - I have a son who is 62 years old, flew the nest ages ago, but we are still being called on to help with his finances. Unfortunately, he never became an adult. Love, daver

Wow Daver - that is a story I hear so frequently - parents being relied on to help their children with their finances - often when they cannot really afford it themselves but they make the sacrifice:-) Hugs Jan xx

So true, Jan; if we are true parents, our childhood is over when we have a child of our own. Best wishes in the contest. Thanks for all your kind comments; I am slowly getting back into the groove.

Reading this brought me into a greater awareness of spending time with my son. With a gentleman's heart and a striking beauty with courage a woman possess, herald the end of childhood. Good luck for you in this contest. Thanks. (^_^) Noel.

great one, jan! this brings back a vivid memory of filling out a form when my son was in nursery school and when it said "mother's name" i filled in MY mother's name! it took me a minute to realize that yes, I was the mother they meant!

I don't think it is what FJ is after Sandra - i actually posted it as not for the contest but was persuaded to change my mind - here's hoping or it will be yet another N/A to add to my growing collection

Great write! Something I can surely relate to! I was a late bloomer for maturity. I, too became an adult on the day I gave birth to my son (25 years old). For some reason, it took having a second child for me to take the full plunge into adulthood and maturity at 27. Thank you for sharing! I love a great poem that relates to my life too! God bless!
