To the Sky Tonight...
To the sky tonight (from two passersby)
who stole a moment to watch you cry
The wind blew the trees from off their tops
and tugged the cloud blanket swift over the night
We waited at the top of the kitchen stairs
and laughed at the thunder like we didn’t care
The flood gates could open and never stop
and this would but be another memory to share
My daughters eyes flew from the trees to your sky
and I saw her inhale deep and gently sigh
for she wasn’t the girl whose countenance drops
or who runs from the lightning and hides inside.
She wanted to run in your tears.
She felt all the anguish of ten thousand men
who had offered up ten thousand prayers.
She never decided to hide her own eyes
or give in to perilous fear.
I held her in my arms with delight
to be able to share in this sight
A storm full of passion is always in fashion
as the sky cries it’s eyes out tonight.
I memorize this haven of time
To solidly fix all this natural bliss
like a tree rooted deep in my mind.
I return my daughter’s sweet smile
and nod that it’s time to go in
She’s the sun in my skies when it’s pouring outside
She’s the moment that I start to grin.
