Poet's Notes: A new poem from my 4th week in a Stanford continuing education class offered on the internet, a study of free verse and structure. We were directed to write as unconsciously as we could for 5 minutes, then after an hour or so to attempt to pull material of interest from what we have written to compose a free verse poem. What follows immediately is my source material for the poem that follows below it. I hope you will enjoy both.
I am planning to do a number of poems using this title. I thought about calling the poem 'Colored Poem #1,' the 'Not White Poem #1,' but using 'Softly Dirty Poem #1' to suggest both a touch of color and sensuality was the winning idea and will be the title for each new poem in the series as I complete them, i.e.. 'Softly Dirty Poem #2' which will be based on the color Orange, etc.
My source material:
Green like a valley following a river, green like an ocean after a storm, green emotions, queasiness, sickness, jealousy, green grass soft to the touch, a green sky ominous calling, green houses, green autos, green paint, a green truck with green headlights and fluorescent under lights that seems ominous, green spaces, Green Peace with dancers in green tutus that skip like green pebbles across a dark green pond, green clothing on girls that look like they want to go somewhere, they simply want to go…. take me! fireworks laced with green like skirts that explode at your touch, leaving only softness behind and hot memories of green smoke.
