Short Shrift - Final Walk

Tick tick tick tick I sit here and wait After I've ate For those final few moments of my fate Before my final walk straight through that gate The clock is ticking I have to finally admit To sins I have committed Thoughts have made me wonder how I got this far I fought fiercely overseas for my country Coming back home with heartache Not knowing what state I was in The battle did not end there for me I still carry the weight of pain and suffering Preventing me to adjust to civilian life Losing everything in my life Of the insanity that I was going through The pain in my soul is so heavy The person in the mirror isn't me I sought my counseling Through drugs and alcohol When it wasn't enough I took it out on my family Now I sit here and wait For the freedom I seek May God forgive me And bring me peace when I sleep By:Eve Roper 7/19/2015

Oh, to have seen what they have seen, we should be truly thankful we have been spared. As long as wars continue, so this curse will thrive. A great write, Eve, and congratulations, Viv x

Eve, this becomes even more poignant as it is written from a woman's perspective...my daughter served 26 years in the Army, an ER nurse she did a tour in Iraq so this hits a close to home. There is no way that those of us who were not there can begin to understand those who were. That applies to all combat situations. Thanks for entering this poem in the contest

Your poem flows with a sad beat and the words say everything, by evoking thoughts within the reader's consciousness, bringing the submerged pain to the surface of the heart. Emile. #7

A powerful poem, Eve. A 7. I can see this happening to many of our soldiers returning from war. Their minds so messed up and difficult to adjust to civilian life. I know this will do well in the contest. Blessings, Darlene

Oh, I am so sorry, Eve, about your son. My prayers go out to him for healing and recovery. Such strong emotions in your poem. And now I understand where all that was coming from.

Thank you, Darlene, for the support and encouragement. I just had my son over this morning for breakfast and was telling me a little of what went on in Desert Strom but he struggles still to remember and also with his emotions. My heart aches when I see him he suffers from traumatic brain injury while he was in the service.
