Poetry After Midnight - Version 1

I just need to get some sleep, As I lay here beneath my quilt, Yet, I know these words will not keep, By morning they will die and wilt. Turning on my lamp, hurts my eyes, As I sit up in my warm bed, No matter how hard it tries, The lines won't remain in my head. The clock says it's after midnight, But, poetry waits for no one, I'll stay up until dawn's early light, Until I can get this poem done. If I try to write this tomorrow, The words will have left my mind, My heart will break with sorrow, When the poetry I can no longer find. I've become a tired, weeping willow, But, I didn't have a choice, I want to lay my head on the pillow, And, try to quiet down this voice.

I could easily have written these same thoughts myself! my nights are very often 'disturbed' by my loving muse; handy to keep paper and pen on the bedside table. Lovely write. // paul

I felt exactly the same way when I read your poem, Paul! I can never fall asleep when my muse keeps whispering in my ear. I keep a pen and paper close to me at all times, because you never know when an inspiration may come.

Congratulations on your win! I enjoyed reading this poem because it sounds identical to what I go through when I have great ideas in the middle of the night and just need to record them immediately before I forget them. Thank you for sharing!

wow, this happens to me SO often. I have lost several poems to sheer tiredness or to having an uninspired muse. An enjoyable read this is.

I have been there with the one line that I need to remember and at times I have dreamed of writing poetry..Excellent work putting down the way we feel and what we do to save that thought..I noticed that you visited my work..Sara

Oh I have been there many times. Those beautiful poetic phrases slip through our minds so easily! Why is that! Need to write them down immediately or... poof! GONE!!! Very good write and as you can see, many of us can surely relate to it!!! Hugs, Jack xoxoxox

I always write my poems with paper and pen, so then I can rewrite them, before I post them on Poetry Soup!

I have a iPad so no need to turn on a light or find a pen and paper. Most of my poems go straight from my brain onto the soup.

I know the feeling. Having an Ipod Touch helps. I just put my thoughts on the notepad app an after i wake up I transfer them to paper and spend time editing. Good poem
