Old Age Is a Buzz Kill- Two Lenses

How I loved summer fairs - the cool night wind in my hair as I twirled on the tilt-a-whirl or climbing into sky. . . then descending at lightening speed, stomach leaping at the thrill of it; I was buzzed, wishing it would never end. My fifty-ninth birthday at the state fair, I sampled again the drug I craved when I bought two tickets for rides. But my pleasure was short-lived. By the second ride and feeling nauseous, I had to accept I’d taken my last ride. Written 2/25 For the Two Lenses Poetry Contest of Sara Kendrick

I like what you did with the two-lens effect and the upside down etheree. I used to love shrimp. Couldn't get enough of them -- especially shrimp cocktail. Today, I can't even look at them without getting sick to my stomach. Strange....

Isn't the worse thing ever to realize that something that thrilled you in your younger years makes you nauseated now.

Wonderfully executed, Andrea! I love how your words escalated with excitement in the first part, and then de-escalated with the second part, thus complimenting the shape. I love my roller-coasters ... when I was in my tween years I always took Dramamine because I feared I would get sick. One day I forgot too, and I was the only one in the group that DIDN'T get sick. I suppose my stomach was stronger than I thought.

Congratulations on a winning etheree in which you do not shy away from declaring your age, Andrea:) I must admit that it's rollercoasters that I stay away from now! // paul

Why do you have to hit me in the feels like that? A good poem about how growing up isn't always so good. But it's life. I'm nineteen, but I still long to relive my past at times.

you are still a baby, and very lucky to be so. Enjoy those carnival rides. Around 35 or 40 they won't feel so hot!!

Went out on a blind date with this stiff gal. I'd given up hope we would hit it off and then we rode on a killer coaster. Boy did she grab hold of me! As ever, you bring things to life in a most charming way. Love, daver

Indeed those lenses swept me to my own childhood...and to my own maturing age : ).. Listen Andrea, maybe some rides we cannot risk to do anymore, but us girls will always find our way to have fun. Loved your post.

This looks like a "shape" poem to me. I did not re- post my poem - just described a different season. I like fairs, too. You should check out Coney Island if you ever come to NYC. The Cylone rollercoaster terrified me when I rod it the last time - and I think it will be the last time I ever go on it. Peace & Love Matthew Anish
