A Promise To a Maiden

O tortured maiden that sleep eludes! Whence comes your dread of lurid nights, of shades that inspire your anxious moods and fainting heart when off are the lights? Now and anon you are beset each night by your perplexing fears of death and dying; their onset feeds your nightmares and brings you tears. The fear of Death thus steals your sleep and robs you of your required rest; you wilt and flag like errant sheep that’s deaf to their shepherd’s behest. But have no fear!—for as your friend I shall remain for evermore and will not leave until time's end so you can thrive and not before.
