Mid-Nightmares

MID-NIGHTMARES It haunts the wicked parts of sleep, where even dream's darkest corners will not tread. Drowning shadows in the stinging tears we weep, immobilizing dream and dreamer, frozen to the bed. We cannot move a lower limb or arm, and every image seen will prick the skin. Grit fear, the grizzly thing will strike and harm, and strangle dreamer with its seething grin. Darkest fears that make the blackest black look white, and play frenetic brain with worst scenario and dread. A thousand deaths as though the sky were blind of stars at night, nor birth by sun will cease these apparitions boiling in our head. No air to lungs nor breath to spirit as we sleep, and blue the blood is tainted by the plots and schemes. The heart may jump or run and charge to sudden leap, and straightaway we're lost in frail and whispered dreams. Each of us delivered from the vile unpleasant thing, for one warm soul to wake us with the morning's bell. Companion, embrace and take us up and under wing, and send the beasts of vision back to fade away in hell! Thank you Skat! I see you won one recently too! I am always dumbfounded & one of you informs me. Huh! I've been down with some virus so, thanks for letting me know! Cheers!

The beastly nightmares seem so real and tragically reappear after years! A good take Edlynn!

An excellent transmission of feelings, Edlynn. Dark frightening dreams have rarely visited me, but once I had an ugly one which repeated itself about 4/5 times...hanging on for dear life from a high cliff! ~ Regards // paul

Ah yes, The impending doom dream! The worse ones do love a repeat. I don't have as many nightmares as an adult (hardly dream or can't recall by morning light)? I did in my 20's & 30's and thought it might be an interesting experiment to try and capture those night beasties in verse. THANK YOU Paul for giving it a peak-see!

I am revisiting this poem and glad to see you have submitted it to "Dark Poetry" - another contest I do not know about, but do know I have liked this poem since first reading it months ago. Can you believe it, months, plural? CayCay

It seems like a year ago to me but it has been just two months and working on three. You are lovely to stop by and give it a second read. I will be dropping in on your reads as well! Thank you CayCay.

Excellent Write Edlynn. I can relate to this poem. I hate the ones that you have now space around you. You feel like your boxed in. My worst dream. When I was young I dreamed I was drowning. That was a bad one. I have also had nice dreams. Your in a state of no control.

Yes! It doesn't even matter that you conscious self keeps feeding you reality messages: "this is a dream...brain to Edlynn, you are not awake, pay no attention to that man behind the screen; he isn't real" One goes on in a mad panic trying to fight the dreaded fears and monsters.

Hmmm, another really great reply you left me that I never saw!! DANG, the reason I WAKE UP from dreams is just to go pee during the night, so that means it's no wonder I can't get the dreams back; however, they DO morph sometimes and that can be cool!!

Ha ha! No what you mean Jellybean! As a new Souper, I fiannaly went to Profile and turned the "on option" to get my messages via Email. I never miss a thing & dont need to use text or anything else unless we want to do suggestions or more personal conversation. Then I go to text. Otherwise, I'm loving receipt by Email!

Yes, this is so interesting to me. I enjoyed this one a lot. I have studied about dreams a bit and they are fascinating topics! Have you ever woken up from a nightmare that was kind of "Cool" like a STephen King novel so you wanted to try to go back to sleep to continue it? I have done this a few times and usually it does not turn out!!

Hmmm an interesting topic ladies:) I confess to having tried unsuccessfully to go back to pleasant dreams; only works if you slightly change the subject according to the situation. ~ Regards to all:) // paul

I am especially tormented in dreams when I'm frightened, but my feet will not move. I am chiming in to say that I'm fascinated by your dream facts, Edlynn - I'm familiar with your 2nd point, but not the first about losing a dream if we move. Many a time, I have wanted a sweet dream (never S. King) to continue. Now I know what to do - or better yet, not to do ... CayCay

Yes...I too have awakened from a Stephen King novel. I'm presently living in one with our Fires! They say two things:(1) if you move any part of your body when you awaken from the dream, you won't remember it, and (2) if you try and go back to sleep to finish it, the dream will morph into something else. Of course, this poem is about wanting to get out of the dream but you're imprissoned & can't wake up. It's like feeling pain while under anesthetic & not being able to do a thing about it! I'm so glad you enjoyed this Andrea!
