Laughter explodes, runs riot
children huddled beneath sheets,
heads lost in wonderland of white.
Grown-ups with whispered words
wait, breath held tight,
at top of the stairs, passed mid-night.
Eyes closed, flushed cheeks,
presents laid at silent feet,
on coverlets bathed by moonlight.
All quiet, all through the night, until
morning brings Christmas Day’s delight.
