Snake hunting bird in silent trance Iconic outline on the branch As daybreak dies, with laughter, quiet You quell your deadly appetite Your searching eye from tilted head Has spied a rocky sun-warmed bed A silent slither from the grass A wary reptile dares to pass And you bark brown, have flown away For gumtops high to eat your prey You laugh - as if you laugh at fate It's true - considering what you ate.

Love the connection between the laugh and the possible peril. A fave :) A story was told to me of offering a frozen sausage to a kookaburra that frequented the clothes line. It was treated as a snake, but had to wait it's fate:)

Yes Jeanette:I often wondered if a snake could get the better of one. Interesting article here about the subject, Cheers, SuZ https://petsacademic.com/do-kookaburras-eat-poisonous-snakes/

"You quell your deadly appetite" Brilliant! In sparse, well-chosen words you have capture a moment of beauty.

I'm not familiar with different breeds of birds (had to look up kookaburra)... I liked the personality you gave it. The way you can so effortlessly connect yourself with nature is a talent worthy of envy... great poem!
