Notes About The Poem

Laugh Kookaburra

Snake hunting bird in silent trance
Iconic outline on the branch
As daybreak dies, with laughter, quiet
You quell your deadly appetite

Your searching eye from tilted head
Has spied a rocky sun-warmed bed
A silent slither from the grass
A wary reptile dares to pass

And you bark brown, have flown away
For gumtops high to eat your prey
You laugh - as if you laugh at fate
It's true - considering what you ate.

Love the connection between the laugh and the possible peril. A fave :) A story was told to me of offering a frozen sausage to a kookaburra that frequented the clothes line. It was treated as a snake, but had to wait it's fate:)

Yes Jeanette:I often wondered if a snake could get the better of one. Interesting article here about the subject, Cheers, SuZ https://petsacademic.com/do-kookaburras-eat-poisonous-snakes/

I'm not familiar with different breeds of birds (had to look up kookaburra)... I liked the personality you gave it. The way you can so effortlessly connect yourself with nature is a talent worthy of envy... great poem!
