THE INCUMBENT by JOHN M. ARRIBAS I am sick and tired of hearing the same old line My elected representative says every things fine He just does not represent the people I know He’s been there forever its time for him to go Against good advice I’ve decided to handle A run for his office that’s littered with scandal My friends support me but strongly advise Brace yourself for the despicable lies They say my opponent will stoop quite low To paint my name as an incompetent foe A teller of lies and impractical goals Of gross inexperience and lacking a soul My family will surely come under attack Innocent children that never fight back They’ll be taunted everywhere for being my kin Those vicious stories will get under their skin Close friends and allies bandied as well Have the same surname gonna catch hell The incumbent is a master of deliberately lying Its ok for him it’s the money he’s eying Horror stories of how he slanders his opposition With unfounded labels to save his position Everyone knows he’s a vicious untamed rival Who’ll do anything to insure his survival The media reports on his numerous escapades Sensible persons that oppose his charades Are too smart to expose their quiet lives To answer allegations and unfounded lies So there he rejoices after each election Stashing unused funds for his re election My opponent is an experienced bureaucrat Who’ll bombard you with everything he’s got Incumbent (2) So brace yourself for many a sleepless night Only a maven knows when and who to fight Its not going to be easy to force him out I was exasperated and wanted to quit When I was approached by a political wit He advised me what I needed to do Being frank and honest is hurting you He knows folks who would rally to me But I need to employ a different strategy We’ll hire a team to uncover his trash Hold fund raisers to collect needed cash Use the money to go on the assault Bend the truth every ill thing is his fault His family members aren’t sacred or pure We’ll use old records on them that’s for sure Tie him to anything that’s evil or bad Find pictures of children hungry and sad Blame him for their hopeless condition “They’re not voters” is his selfish position That might not be true but so what We’ll get the credit he should have got My campaign is humming in high gear We saddled him with smear after smear Well the election is over and we won Now to work and get his policies undone My campaign manager said we have to talk Friends and backers are starting to squawk Your ideas are contrary to theirs To keep you in office we need some repairs Who are these folks, he mentioned a few They are the same that backed” you know who” Incumbent (3) Well yes, he lost them, thought he didn’t need Their money and influence in order to succeed It’s a warning to you if you want to prevail Power and money a provide wind for your sail I went to bed that night looking for sleep I’m swimming in a ocean that is far too deep I thought my manager a traitorous cad He led me by the nose, I’ve really been had The same old policies will remain in place They’ll just be espoused by a different face Some time has elapsed and its quite clear This is some job and there’s no one to fear I come and go no one keeps track Deals come along with ten times your money back I must be absolutely and critically sure Get the right people on board so I can endure An opponent is not a rival, he’s an enemy Lets start a file on any opposition you see Think my last opponent was someone to scorn Any challenger will wish he had never been bor I wake up each morning truly upbeat I’ve become the one, I wanted to unseat
