Story Poem Contest Sponsor: Carol Eastman Somewhere deep into the night, a unicorn decided she wanted to give up her wings. Her family was so distraught and they begged her nicely, “Oh Rainy don’t give up your wings. They are too special, and you know that.” See, Rainy was a different unicorn. She only flew when babies were crying. She’d fly to the crib and soothe them with soft touches and a gentle tune. But something happened last fall. Rainy was on her way to baby Joey’s house, she had been there many a time. Poor Joey was never held and it was very sad. So Rainy landed by his crib and once again, put him to sleep. “Ohhhh…thank goodness, poor Joey has been having a rough time, it seems”, she thought. Rainy left and ended up going to the park with her sisters. One was named Beauty and the other was named Ellie. All three sisters were very close in age, and were all the best of friends. At the park, Ellie saw a lost dog. She has the power to help lost dogs find their owners. So Ellie found Rocky, who always seems lost, and brought him home to his family. Beauty had the ability to see in the dark. This was very useful for drivers at night who needed help seeing while driving. One night an old man dropped his glasses by the gas pedal and Beauty steered his car on the right path and took him home safely. Three sisters with very special gifts. So back to Rainy... The last time she saw Joey, her heart broke into a million pieces. For there was never another little boy who cried so much and craved so much love from his mommy and daddy. In fact, Rainy has never even seen them at all! She was so upset, she brought a blanket and SWOOOSH! She scooped up Joey and brought him back to the forest where she lived. All the unicorns held him and took care of him. Rainy had found a purpose. She was born to be a mother and raise baby Joey. Everything was going very smoothly until one day she encountered a human. See, humans have no idea about unicorns, so Rainy was very shocked. “Uh oh Beauty, a human saw me!” The whole family rushed deep into the forest and waited patiently. Before they knew it, there he was that strange human! His eyes wide open and his mouth dropped. He couldn’t believe his human eyes! They stared at each other for a few seconds and the human heard a baby cry. It was time to change little Joey’s diaper and feed him. All of a sudden Rainy heard, “Joey? Is that YOU?” Rainy knew instantly is was Joey’s daddy. He rushed over and grabbed him quickly and just looked at the three sisters. He said, “what are you? Who are you?” Beauty said gently, “we are unicorns sir.” He said “UNICORNS!!! THERE IS NO SUCH THING!” Rainy stepped up and said how much she had been taking care of Joey since he was born. The human said, “hmmmmm..really? You did all that for my baby boy? I can hardly believe it!” Rainy smiled softly…”yes sir, every time I hear Joey cry, I get a feeling in my left wing and it leads me to your home. I’ve been doing it since he was born, I hope you don’t mind. I promise I would never hurt your sweet boy.” The human said, “my name is Nick, you can call my Nick. WOW! I am so grateful to you Rainy for all your help. I can only imagine all the nice things you have done for my Joey.” Rainy said to Nick, “it was my pleasure, honestly.” Rainy got sad and scared Nick was going to take Joey home and she would never see him again. Nick saw the look in her eye and said, “Rainy, are you ok?” Rainy said, “I’m ok Nick I am just going to miss Joey, that’s all”, with a frown on her face. Nick said happily, “Oh no Rainy! You are welcome to come over whenever you want. I would love for you to meet Joey’s mom and sister!” Rainy was relieved. “Whewwwww”, she thought. It was time for Joey to go back home and Rainy gave him a huge kiss to go with a huge snuggle. From that day forward, Joey and Rainy's relationship grew into a meaningful friendship. Joey still cries every night because he hates going to bed, but every night Rainy flies to his house and snuggles with him until he falls asleep. Great friends they became, indeed. Rainy could not be happier to be a part of Joey’s life and watch him grow into a nice young man. Somewhere deep into the night, Rainy decided she will always adore her special wings. For without them, she would have never met Joey… The End. Date Written: May 6, 2016
