NIGHT DREAMS By Lee Bragan Sometimes I wonder if I’m brave, why scared to go to bed, Even when I’m tucked in warm and all my prayers are said, Father switches off the lamp which takes away the light, And I’m left lying all alone - seeing things at night. Sometimes they’re in the corner, sometimes by the door, Other times I’m certain, they’re crawling on the floor. Most times they come while I’m asleep, sometimes while I’m awake, Regardless of the way they come it always makes me ache. Sometimes they’re black, sometimes they’re red and other times they’re white, It really doesn’t matter - when I’m seeing things at night. It’s really good I’m not a kid or I’d be scared to death, I hide under the covers and try to hold my breath. I hear them slither up the stairs and scrape the window panes, Their favourite time to come for me is when it’s pouring rain. I close my eyes, cover my ears and pretend that it’s daylight, But it makes no difference what I do - I’m seeing things at night. They may be in the ceiling or hiding in the wall, I only know that I’m alone with no one near to call. Again I promise to be good and always say my prayers. I whisper silent verses, hoping that will make it right, But it never seems to help at all – when I’m seeing things at night. I try to stop the demon’s voice that calls me from within, I even pray and promise God I’ll not give into sin. But they just creep closer to my bed and none of them are nice, I’m certain something’s coming and it chills me cold as ice. I’m sure one night the evil things will take me though I’ll fight, I wonder if I’m wicked – ‘cause I’m seeing things at night. I come awake to bright daylight, And wonder how I slept at all, on a night so filled with fright. I ease out of my bed and throw open the curtains, Knowing that one thing will always be certain. That God was with me ‘cause I prayed with all my might. But still I feel them lurking near – I’ll be seeing things tonight.
