Poem
The sun came up and shined through the bars The old man sat up and smiled Thank you Jesus, he said from his heart For blessing this wayward child As he got to his knees, he prayed His cellmate turned in disgust “How can you be happy in this cell, Can you say, in god I trust?”. “We are the lowest of the lowly And God doesn’t really care”. “I have stole and robbed and killed a man, So stop your silly prayer”. The old man stopped his daily prayer, And turned to the angry man Sin is sin and the whole world falls short And you can’t go back again The only way you can enter heaven, Ask God to forgive your deeds You have to take Jesus in your heart To fill your heavenly needs Then the cellie said in disbelief “I’m not worth his precious time “I’m damaged goods and a pile of trash I’ve lived my life in crime.” The old man walked to his worn Bible, Pulled out a crisp dollar bill Let me tell you about his good grace And show his perfect will He went and held the new dollar up “How much is this dollar worth?” The cellie mumbled something about “I know its love is a curse”. The old man wrinkled the dollar and said, “I could soil and stain and tear.” “And I could throw it down on the ground And the whole world would not care.” “But now, it is still worth a dollar And the value is still there, And now you are the same, in God’s eyes Worthy of his love and care. The cellie started sobbing softly “I want the love you now tell” “ And I want to ask his forgiveness”, And escape the horror of Hell Well, the cellie gave his heart that day He was gloriously reborn, Now there are two men praising In that cell each and every morn
