"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it" George Santayana. The American Revolutionary War was The 13 colonies' war for independence. Their beliefs and resolve were so greatly valued that they fought and risked their lives and fortunes. Against tremendous odds, they conquered. They gave presently that others might gain in the years to come. THAT was THEN. The American Civil War demonstrated that The Southern States believed in one way and The Northern States believed differently. It was settled by blood that still bleeds today. The blood of disunity is spilling across America. There is much pain, but the nation remains intact. THAT was also THEN. Need we mention the near extinction of Native Americans? How can we ever justify the human enslavement of millions? Do we dare attempt to explain the Japanese internment camps? Regardless of when we believe that life begins, in the courtroom of Almighty God, who will pay the penalty for the abortion of millions of babies, especially since 1972? Notwithstanding, We must find a way to move on. THAT too was THEN. An entire nation under the spell of Adolf Hitler, and also, an entire world for far too long, stood by and allowed the slaughter of 6 million Jews. Moreover, We and the world must find a way to move on. None of those atrocities must ever happen again. Yes, THAT was THEN. How do we separate the negatives from the positives? So much of THAT which was THEN is also THIS which is NOW. How do we dismiss the evils of yesterday and choose the good? Presently, the future looks dark. Although dim, I still see light. May God enable us to go forward with the 'the good that is NOW'.
