Placed First in: This or That Vol 22 Poetry Contest Sponsored by Edward Ibeh Desperate Hope Let`s muse on one at prime of life Forced to resign from sole duty In the course of his daily strife Not due to incompetency But just to make way for somebody Close friend of the authority In the wake of change of power At peak of the stately tower. Forced to linger in the wombs of despair With helm of family to steer Children`s higher schooling to bear Clouds of stress spreading on his health to fear It was like climbing hoary hills Treading along wide thorny fields Drowning in the tempest of life With wild woeful winds tearing him alive. Dipped in a well of sad sorrows Just far away was tomorrow, Life for him was a dead rattle And living a daily battle; His spirit had dipped to low ebb Dull thoughts kept churning round his head Dark clouds then veiled the sky up high And all reasons dawned for a sigh Stealthily stabbed on his thin back Silently he had to bear the pains Shelving them secretly aback Not showing openly his strains But entrusting them to the Lord To the best he could then afford For Him to preserve them on board And inscribe them in His own record. Yet though all the storms of his life He held the flag of desperate hope high Kept his trust in the Lord ever alive Shining like a dazzling flame in the sky Awaiting a divine superior force Just to steer his life on the rightful course And that guided him to the sublime goal Of liaising with the depth of his soul. In time the Lord`s wind seemed to blow In ears of the authorities And mindful messages did flow On his deepest integrity On his truest sincerity Bright sparks of his capacity True gems of his ability And blaze of his efficiency. As a sign of recognition Of his mark of proficiency He was offered the position Of some responsibility In a public corporation, Soon to signed as adviser Instead of head of ministry By government as employer. Desperate hope so far cherished Foundered on the rock of despair As back to normalcy relished Was viewed by some as a scare; Still hope in the Lord he nourished As his goal he could relinquish By respecting God`s divine will With the glares of a shining trill. Desperate hope in the divinity Is like sparks of effulgent light Gushing out from the sublime Trinity That keeps the spirit ever bright Spurs man to rise if he does fall Maintains the soul brimming so tall And does serve as a sublime prop When life to a low ebb has dropped; Indeed, all happens with His will: * The drop of a leaf with a frill The ebb and flow of mighty waves In depth of gigantic oceans Are all but His obliging slaves Like sunrise on the horizon Like gentle rains that greet the earth For nature to give its true worth. *In verse10.8 Bhagavad Gita as It Is, Lord Krishna says to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshestra: “I am the source of all spiritual and material worlds. Everything emanates from me”
