Poem
THE GOODNESS OF GOD I stop so often in my life, look back at all I’ve done, And realize just where I’d be if not for God’s dear Son. I think about the sin I chose, the scars that I now bear, And then I think of Jesus’ love and just how much He cared. I think about that special day when on my bended knee I trusted in the Son of God to save and set me free. And though I’m often weak and frail and easily go astray, I thank Him that He lifts me up, brings me back to His way. I cannot count the many times I’ve sunk in sad despair, And just when things look at their worst, He comes to meet me there. The goodness of my God is great--too great to comprehend, And yet I know that it is real and it will never end. I hear the stories many times of others just like me Who chose the road I traveled on, but so much more did see. Why God spared me from what they get, right now I may not know, But as He works now in my life, and as He helps me grow, My heart has such desire each day to not turn back again And lead somebody else I know with me back into sin. God’s goodness has been real to me in many ways I see: I have a church where I can go and friends who care for me. I have a pastor, preaching truth, in love, with great concern, I have a Bible I can read and from its pages learn. I have a ministry I love, a meeting Friday night Where someone else stands up to teach from God’s word what is right. This goodness I do not deserve, no merit do I own, Nor can I ever all repay this grace that I have known. But this I know, this goodness great that God to me has sent Accomplishes one thing in life: it leads me to repent. As I look forward to the day when Jesus’ face I’ll see, I’ll thank Him every day I live for His goodness shown to me.
