Healing Through Poetry

by Ella Chandler

Growing up I have never been one for words, I was always so shy and only spoke when spoken to. now I have discovered a newfound confidence. you don't have to be ashamed for being yourself, as a young queer woman unfortunately people still are homophobic and there is still a battle being fought for LGBT rights across the world. I hope to stand up for these rights in the future and create positive change. through writing poetry I am aiming to become more eloquent and discover how to be impactful through words.

I am very new to writing poetry yet I almost find it addictive, the words I wish I could say to others i can just write on to paper and not think about again. It is therapeutic and has helped me heal from trauma and relationships.

Poetry is like using words to paint a picture, which is just beautiful to me. in such a busy world it is nice just to stop for a second and focus on ourselves without any distractions.

I almost always just write freely without using a structure, just thoughts flowing onto the page. i find this the best way to write as i am not overthinking anything. online you see many examples of this and I have read many short poems that have brought me to tears.

The impact poetry has on everyone is fascinating to me, being able to let others know they are not alone in feeling a certain way is my aim and I hope to inspire personal growth in others just as poets i admire have for me.
