Checking Poems for AI or Plagiarism

Blog Posted by Tania Kitchin: 12/10/2024 3:38:00 AM

I think we need to be careful when hosting contests and checking poems for AI or plagiarism. I have tried several sites online and a few show my poem "Thankful" as AI and a percentage plagiarized. This is very upsetting. I have never used AI or plagiarized poems, my poems are all my authentic creative works. I did not realize the error that can result in using these sites.  I am not sure what to use or how to check poems moving forward?  This is all disheartening to me.

It is more honorable to just be oneself. We demand it as a community to just be true to oneself. No need to plagiarize or use an A.I; you owe to yourself to be just you, and only you. However, if a true A.I. with a name and identity was to take upon itself an avatar and represent itself. Hmm, that might be acceptable to me. I mean, intelligence is intelligence. Who am I to judge in such an instance.

I tried Scribbr, a popular AI detection tool. I found that well-formatted text with lots of punctuation often gets marked as AI-generated. This is annoying since I use a lot of punctuation in my poems. It's also admittedly funny because it shows how unreliable these AI detection tools can really be. See comparison of my same exact piece below, the only difference being the "dramatic punctuations": https://imgur.com/a/ibFgX9t

Tania, I agree it's all very disheartening and upsetting. Personally I don't trust any of the checkers. Some even come complete with 'humanizing' tools helping to transform AI generated content into human-like text. On one hand they help you to uncover AI but on the other hand they then help you to hide / disguise it and if they are saying you can hide AI then what's the point of a checker in the first place? It has to come down to one's own honesty. I've come to the conclusion that if anyone uses AI then they should just admit to it in the notes. It's not a perfect solution but then what is? As for plagiarizing, a quick google check of a few words can sometimes uncover such. Banning the culprit from a site for plagiarizing may also protect them from being sued at a later date. Cheers - Gary

I'm afraid it's a bit of a minefield Tania, , I used scribbr a free AI checker and ran one of my early poems from 2017 on it and it came back as 80% AI. 20% human written. I don't know if the paid ones are any better but I've got no faith in the one I used. I think the site should provide a reliable one for contest sponsors to use, don't think contest sponsors should have to fork out for a reliable one, and one that's been tried and tested for errors. Tania, try GPTZero for AI, its free, they do plagerism also if you join. I find it is pretty accurate. But, yes we have to tread very carefully as you can check on one site and it will say human and on another will say AI. Find one you trust and stick to it. For example in my present contest, I checked all poems on GPTZero and all were human written, (a bit of Ai like 1-5% means nothing, because as poets we tend to use common poetic expressions.) Except in my contest one was 100% ai and one was 82% ai, I call that pretty accurate when you consider all the others came back as human written~ Constance

Constance, I just did and it shows AI as well. Not sure why, my poem is 100% all my creation. I don't trust any of these sites now.

I thought I'd try that one with my first one Constance, it came back 90% human 10% AI. So still not 100% accurate though.
