Winter approaches, riding swiftly on northerly winds. Leaves have begun to fall, tumbling upon Autumn breezes. A chill fills the air, eager to settle in, for seasonal changes that are taking place signal that the time has drawn near to feast on remaining berries to sustain life during hibernation. Some animal families cuddle together, snuggled warmly within hillside caves to escape frigid winter weather. Burrowed in the nurturing womb of Mother Earth, slumbering until snow and ice will melt. They emerge at the first breath of spring when nature knows it's time she gives birth. Let the opening of eyes be during a gentle rain so, it will wash away long months of sleep. Then, sunlight can dry them with warm rays before the search of food to end their fast. I've never felt deprived of a winter dormancy. Cocooning would not be a restful state for me. I would sorely miss celestial nights, wishing on stars and gazing at the moon. I enjoy the sound of the wind whistling as it dances through bare limbed trees. I want to watch snowflakes whirl in flurries as they silently freefall aground. How I'd also miss the lure of these... magenta dawns when I wake in the morning, goldenrod skies in the afternoon heat, and amethyst twilights that darken too soon. Months of stasis would rob me of time that I would rather spend living instead of in deep slumber.

Beautifully written Lin, got to love stanza 3, as seen from a human perspective very cute indeed, must agree I definitely would not want to miss such a perfect winter you describe in a state of hibernation, which also gets me pondering, do animals appreciate the scenery around them, or just get on with life, super poem cheers David

I wouldn’t think it’s the scenery they enjoy, just what their surroundings provide for their needs.

a truly captivating poem, Lin! You beautifully described winter with its state of hibernation. I agree with these lines: "I've never felt deprived of a winter dormancy. Cocooning would not be a restful state for me. I would sorely miss celestial nights, wishing on stars and gazing at the moon." I don't handle well these months of stasis. Your poem had a personable tone but was at the some time universal in the message conveyed. Am faving this one. I believe this is a fabulous contest entry!

Grateful am I, Sara for always letting me in on what you liked best. I don't mind indoors, but not asleep. We shall see if it pleases the sponsor, but if not, I won't lose any sleep over it. I know that's a shameful pun, but it's what fluttered through my mind.

You captured the state of hibernation well Lin, 7 or 8 hours a night is enough for me, any more than that I'd feel I was missing out. Good luck in the contest and hope you have a lovely weekend. Tom

Hi, Tom and many thanks for your information on sleep. If I get 5 hours a night, I'm lucky. It's been this way for years. My weekend is just grand so far. Hoping yours is equally fine.
