Winter's Deep Slumber

Winter approaches,
riding swiftly on northerly winds.
Leaves have begun to fall,
tumbling upon Autumn breezes.
A chill fills the air, eager to settle in,
for seasonal changes that are taking place
signal that the time has drawn near
to feast on remaining berries
to sustain life during hibernation.
Some animal families cuddle together,
snuggled warmly within hillside caves
to escape frigid winter weather.
Burrowed in the nurturing womb of Mother Earth,
slumbering until snow and ice will melt.
They emerge at the first breath of spring
when nature knows it's time she gives birth.
Let the opening of eyes be during a gentle rain
so, it will wash away long months of sleep.
Then, sunlight can dry them with warm rays
before the search of food to end their fast.
I've never felt deprived of a winter dormancy.
Cocooning would not be a restful state for me.
I would sorely miss celestial nights,
wishing on stars and gazing at the moon.
I enjoy the sound of the wind whistling
as it dances through bare limbed trees.
I want to watch snowflakes whirl in flurries
as they silently freefall aground.
How I'd also miss the lure of these...
magenta dawns when I wake in the morning,
goldenrod skies in the afternoon heat,
and amethyst twilights that darken too soon.
Months of stasis would rob me of time
that I would rather spend living
instead of in deep slumber.
