Rules

One must master the rules before breaking them -- it is like that, especially with poetry: One learns to logically manage the spaces~ what isn't said, the pauses and non verbal connective feels -- The novice often says too much or is so obliquely obscure that he or she makes senseless attachment with others -- Fine fabric of poetry closer the frayed edges of language, loose threads of thought we light, to keep from unraveling. What lasting value, if any at all, rises in the smoke, is sustained by memory of the lyrical flash.

Indeed, each of us a pixel, of the human psyche...but important enough to Christ who allowed Himself to be crucified for all, no exclusions. We may see ourselves as mere pixels, but God sees us, perhaps, as part of the Greater Body of His Christ portrait..?! Who am I to argue with the One who gave me Life, and so much living opportunity? So much power...my conglomerate able to beautify or destroy an entire world? Thank you, Joe.

I enjoyed reading your wonderful "Rules" write. Great opening line. It is good to have rules. Too many rules for writers, I find can hurt their creativity. The pen must go where the pen wants to go. I sent you Soup-Mail. Have a blessed day/weekend writing away..........

This is great. I especially liked the first verse. I found after many years of practice that it's ok to go off meter once in a while. And not every line needs to have the exact same number of syllables. Sometimes the poem sounds better by going against that rule. But judges who insist on exact syllables in sonnets, for example, force me to stick to the standard!

I hear you, we don't want to make poetry a battle -- so we go along when we can. I know all the rules are buried in my poetry~ I don't even bother to check anymore. To me, poetry is like painting -- thumps, fingers, toes, saliva...whatever works for your personal creation.

Writing in form then realizing you can play with placement! Poetry can be so enjoyable if at first you learn some lessons! ~ Kim :)

Like anything else -- once we can walk, we try running, hopping -- whatever it takes to get where we have determined we want to go. Thank you, Kim.

- Think I'll break them before I master them ... and have some frayed edges here and there, Joe :) - hugs
