Dickensian Dactyl

Listen to poem:
Squickleby Pickleby
Nicholas Nickleby
loses his Father and
feels quite forlorn.

Ralph his tight uncle a
disciplinarian
mean to the marrow
regards him with scorn.

Nicholas, penniless
uncompromisingly
works as a master where
boys take the flack.

Nickleby fears for the
safety of orphans there
rescues a cripple and
never looks back.

Granted this ending is
unsatisfactory
Dickens had plenty more
meat to this tale.

So to all readers I
send my apologies;
These double dactyls are
tricky travail.

Wendy, just spotted this gem and loved it! Congrats for your win in two contests, as you know, I am a big fan of your precision in rhyme and meter. I've not read much Dickens, but am happy to have read this brief synopsis in Double Dactyl form. Best ~ John

Thank you,Sam. I have neglected the English classics being so fond of reading French and German literature to keep up my language skills but maybe this is the year to tick all the Dickens' masterpieces off my to do list!

'Nicholas Nickleby' seemed tailor made for use with this poetic form,Eric and as the story was known to me, it just seemed to roll along naturally. Thank you for such a kind appraisal. How interesting that we both ended on words of French origin!
