Why I Weep

I'm named a willow tree and live in grace, the whole of me distinctive in its shape. My elegance well suits this lush landscape of hillocks flung across the field I face. . . and gentle rills meander through this place. In spring I don a long virescent cape comprised of many supple arms that drape to earth and, with Eve’s shadows, interlace. Oh, countless times Sun’s flecked my every leaf and Sky distilled her stars as night would creep. Young lovers, though, have fled, their time so brief. They used to spread a cloth to eat; then sleep beneath me in my shade. They knew no grief. . . Not privy to their destiny, I weep.

The happy willow of the beginning, reaches a point of personal agony at the emotional climax of the poem. Fascinating.

Andrea, Tim and I stumbled upon this - really. AND WHAT A blessing that stumble was, this is most beautiful. Not only were we both touched, but Tim listened and learned Iambic Pent from your poem (I told him it would be near perfect or perfect). So, we enjoyed being with you and your poem this morn. Oh, happy day to you ... CayCay

Beautifully creative poem, Andrea. The vivid description of the willow tree combined w/the capriciousness of human relationship as seen thru the eyes of the willow tree is a true work of art. Great poem, dear lady. Love and joy to you.

While we might know their (young lovers)destiny, the willow holds their secrets for eternity. I enjoyed your sonnet today. It went well with the much needed rainfall of the night. RAY

Im faving this one for sure. The feel of the end of it is almost King Learish.(or I guess I should say Shakespearean) Does that make sense? Just the gravity and simplicity of the end...I weep...makes me think of King Lear..."He dies." The simplicity of this is genious and you deserve this win. Congrats!
