Underneath
I polish my toenails, but no one will see them
‘Til I wear my sandals next summer.
I might as well shine all the pipes ‘neath the sink
Just in case I’ll be needing the plumber.
I also wear underwear, patterned and bright,
Though only my husband might know it.
I guess it seems strange to care how something looks
When there’s no one to whom you will show it.
But each time I look at my toes or get dressed,
I enjoy every hue or design;
And I realize I’m gussied for one person’s view,
Which just happens, of course, to be mine!
