Touching Evolution
In the whole vastness
of this Universe
It is hard to imagine that we
are the only life force
Here, where morning light is
spread with opal ease, over
sapphire oceans and emerald fields
Has another race of living beings evolved?
Existing in the endless tracts of space
Are they similar, or equally mixed
like us, capable of cruelty as
well as kindness?
Do they watch us, silent
or wait in fear, for the onslaught
of unpredictable humanity-
or have life-forms in countless milleniums
come and gone,
flourished and been destroyed or simply disappeared?
Pray, that in the whole vastness of this universe,
we'll have the wisdom to protect our own life force;
to preserve the sapphire oceans that give life
to this, our Earth and pray not to become,
another cold dead sphere
spinning into infinity.
