The Burdens of Wings
As a young child I went to the zoo
I loved the beauty of nature
and the creatures that I had never before set my eyes on
I remember a regal bird perched upon a tree
I remember the way it looked at the world as if he were challenging it
He looked out over the horizon
And didn't move
Not once
I asked my mother why the bird was not flying
She told me he couldn't use his wings
How awful not to be able to use such a power
For the power to soar to the heavens
Could soar away from you
I don't know what happened to the birds wings
But to this day I think about what it would be like to fly
Fly away from my problems
But instead the eagle had every burden tied to his back
Sometimes the things you desire the most
are the biggest burden to carry
