Reflections of Love and Mercy
now that I have caught sight
of the other side of the mirror
where someone looks back
with pure love, and brown eyes clearer
a tenderness in reflection
that needs no description
other than "I'll be right back"
while he slips on old slacks
and a jacket over pajamas
sticks bare feet into old boots
to go out into the frigid night
and into the cold slant of ice
I hear the hammer of the engine
then a cold grinding sound begins
and the splashing of rubber tires
rolling down the gravel driveway
on wind beaten wings that fly
on a mission to the pharmacy
to buy me scarlet syrup
to calm a coughing fury
a love with gentle mercy
reflected once again, I see
it needs no contemplation
of vows not forsaken
(thank God! ... he is taken!)
he's the man that I married
