Only Hope
Only Hope
I’m an old man,
but not as old as I was.
I have a friend,
my best friend,
older than I am
but older than he is,
who is slowly
yet surely
killing himself.
How do I say to him
that I’ll be with him
on his journey,
that I don’t judge
his choices?
How do I thank him
for being with me
on my journey?
What will I do
when he is no longer
a companion through life?
Can love accompany
passage into the void,
the furnace of cremation,
the scattering of the ashes?
I have no answers.
Only hope.
