My Ode to the Netherlands

Oh lovely Netherlands, you are now my second home.
You leave me thrilled and enchanted where ever I roam.

I smiled when floating down streets made from the sea,
Touring on charming glass covered canal boats with glee.

There’s beauty in the coolness of a windswept day,
As I rode the wind on my bicycle and joyously flew away.

Then I set out to visit famous paintings I was shown.
Each lovely museum has a quaint charm all its own.

One famous museum displayed art of Vincent van Gogh.
It has a cool theatre inside, most tourists don’t know.

I just had to visit Den Haag’s St. Mauritius to view
Vermeer’s “Girl with a pearl earring” and other art too.

I toured through Madame Tussaud’s Wax museum happily.
Johnny Depp and George Clooney were there waiting for me!

Oh lovely gardens of Keukenhof, my time’s worth BEST spent.
I’ll never forget your bright tulip hues with their heavenly scent.

Hartelijk bedankt oh lovely Netherlands, land of the free.
Alstublieft, alstublieft I beseech you, don’t forget me.

*Hartelijk bedankt - heartfelt thanks
*Alstublieft – please

Thank you so much Elly and I hope your birthday was everything you wished for. I adore your beautiful country and have spent 4 holidays in a row there. There is still so much I long to see. My oldest daughter visited last year and even took her Siberian Husky along with her. She said it was the best vacation she ever had. It was her 6th trip there. Aloha, Connie P.S. Your website is lovely.

Who could ever forget you Connie? Your words resonate with beauty. I don't travel so I have never been to the Netherlands, but your poem excites vivid visual images in me. I feel I have been there. I don't know what to say about the contest. I've said in other places that poetry isn't football. There can never be winners and losers. In poetry, everybody wins. As long as the reader experiences the feelings felt by the poet. And by that measure you win! Peace, lovely Connie:) Sam
