Notes About The Poem

Love Beyond the Pale

You lay upon the warm wet earth
now ripped from limb to limb.
Your present shape denies the girth
of your form in its prime.

A life cut short and denied its worth
about you ivy climbs,
my love for you evokes the hearth
a bonfire which knows no end time.

Now fallen, slain, cast for rebirth,
the core of you sublime,
an earthly stump, at forest skirt
reminds me of grand times.

Soon, I too will go beyond the earth
recalling passion's prime,
through the veil of life unearthed
my heart returned to thine.

Give up on Canny ... else, renew the face towards Canny! Between today and six moons, show the light: the path to the new land ...

Hi Debbie; I found this when trying to submit my first quatrain. This one is helpful, and somewhat sad, uplifting finally because you know where your hope comes from, Amen! Congrats, Anil Deo

Debbie:fine poem. Words and phrases flow & read effortlessly, carrying readers' thoughts likewise. Secondly, your oft-told theme - comfort knowing death is merely glorious rebirth - builds beautifully from first stanza to last. Like music starting loud then gradually whispering, your poem changes from appreciation of the life & death of the tree into the narrator's gradually comparing it to our own lives, finishing with the narrator's own comforting self-reflection. Nicely written.

Sir. Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, was fascinated by this particular theme, especially after his beloved wife died, and he turned to researching on the life after death and the ways to communicate with the beloved dead. He altogether stopped writing crime fiction and came up with a classic novel which described the other world beyond the curtain. Like dear Debbie Guzzi points out here in this poem of hers, people love to wait beyond the pale, for their return some day.

Wow cher, beautiful stuff here...The first verse sounded like you were describing a human...One of these days I would like to visit Methuselah, a Bristlecone Pine almost 5,000 yrs old in California...That would be awesome! - Tim
